The most important chart in this story is found at the bottom and points out that the ideology of American voters is closer to that of the Republican candidates than it is to that of the Democrats. While the Democratic team may currently have more momentum going for it than does the Republican team, momentum can certainly shift and irrespective of the issue of momentum, it seems clear that there is no great ideological realignment taking place that would favor liberals over conservatives. In other words, the electorate remains sympathetic to the Republican position and once the Republican brand name is restored (and these sorts of restorations usually happen a great deal faster on both sides of the partisan divide than the cynics believe), the GOP will be able to compete effectively for votes.

Food for thought for all those who believe that Republicans are dead and doomed as a party. Food for thought as well in advance of the fall election; whatever the conventional wisdom might say, no one should think that this election is in the bag for the Democrats.

There are some people who identify themselves as neither conservative or liberal. I do agree that the most conservative member of the republican party, is probably closer to the middle than the most progressive member of the democratic party, but I think Obama, Hillary, or Edwards will stake their positions really close to the middle of the political spectrum for the general election. But on the plus side, the Dems are locked into a death struggle for the nomination for now.

The truth can only be found by those who seek it.

It seems that the media & some republicans are quick to sound the dirge - dare I say reminiscent of Hairy Reed (purposefully mispelled) saying that Iraq was lost while the battle raged.

Republican/conservatives win on issues, & that is why I share frustration with many regarding the coverage of the election that is devoid of issues. I hope that with the presidential election the congressional elections become more nationalized around issues because if our candidates take strong conservative stances on issues, we win more than lose.

In order to destroy the Left in the fall of '08 the Repubs. must nationalize the election from the Congressional districts all the way to 1600 PA Ave. They must do what was done in '94.
The leadership of the Demorat party has since 9/11 NOT come up with a plan to defeat the Islamists, nor secure the world from the barbarians. This issue runs from energy development here at home through border security all the way to foreign policy and national defense.
To say the the Demorats' a@@es are exposed accross this spectrum is a large understatement.
Then there is the tiny issue of the future of the country......
The Dems what to manage the decline of the US. A decline they want to insure and promote because we- according to them- are too powerful, too arrogant, too free, have private property and use too many to the world's resources, etc., etc. OH and of course we are too stupid to vote them into office in every election- local state and federal.
Lastly, as the economy has been on the front burner of late.....
Put either to socialists running on the Dem side in the presidency and add a Congress run by the current crop of "progressives" and inside of 24 months the US economy will be back to '78-'80 . I lived through Jimmah Carter and we as a nation DO NOT want to go back there !!!

Media talking heads and writers are already put the shovel to the GOP grave site. But what if a true Delegate race would rise from grave and ignite enthusiasm across the country, giving conservatives across the country a chance not seen in two generations or is it three. Imagine the Dems have there canidate in two weeks and we have a race that holds the media and the countries attention till June. Our ideas would dominate the Conversation for most of the year. thoughts

The voting public and MSM has let the Dems get away with running on "intentions" for too long. They have not been held accountable for their actions/inactions, especially inaction on protecting this country. When will the people and MSM demand results and judge candidates on their record instead of their good intentions. After all the path to hell is paved with good intentions. At least that is what I learned in Sunday School. But, people who go to Church as believe in God have to be crazy so it doesn't matter what I think.

One way to read it is that self-identified R's consider themselves near the "conservative" pole, whereas D's consider themselves just-left-of-center. So the "average voter" is right-of-center.

What might have been more interesting would be to look at self-identified independents -- where do they see themselves, and where do they see the candidates?

Alternatively, look at the median voter, not the mean. The median voter decides the election....

peace,
lilnev
