Despite the national attention (freakshow?) devoted to Al Franken's candidacy for the United States Senate, a new poll from the State shows him with a sizeable lead.

"A new Minnesota Public Radio poll shows Republican Sen. Norm Coleman would handily defeat DFLers Mike Ciresi or Al Franken if the election were held today. "

Now, granted - it's not all good news, but it's also not surprising to see Coleman's approval rating slip over the last couple years - it mirrors the fortunes of Republicans nationwide. But considering the national trend - and the political environment in Minnesota - these numbers are great news for Coleman.

Coleman: 54%
Franken: 32%

Coleman: 52%
Ciresi: 29%

(By the way, I do love how NPR MPR slips the actual poll numbers six paragraphs into the story)

Its MPR, not NPR.

Second, Franken's numbers now are even worse than they were in February (on the day he announced, where SurveyUSA put him down by 20, and in March when Rasmussen put him down by 10 points.

I apologize for the typo - fixing now.

52% in 2004 to 48% today? That's well within the margin of error, over a 3+ year span, and that's supposed to be some worrying sign? I guess they needed to find something to give the story a negative spin.
