But not by that much. (Via Glenn Reynolds)
"I have to tell you that what I find is offensive is that everytime somebody says something about the campaign, you're accused of being racist," Ferraro told Fox News Channel.
" 'Any time anybody does anything that in any way pulls this campaign down and says let's address reality and the problems we're facing in this world, you're accused of being racist, so you have to shut up. Racism works in two different directions. I really think they're attacking me because I'm white. How's that?' "
Oh, that's just fine, Ms. Ferraro. Keep it up: we've got weeks and weeks to go before Pennsylvania. What? Oh, don't mind me. I'm just going to be over here, watching Democrats scream "racist" at each other while sharpening their knives. You keep on doing what you're doing.

PS: I suppose that it'd be cruel of me to point out that the Democrats wouldn't be in this mess if they had just listened to me in the first place...

What will be really cool is if Clinton actually bends to pressure and lets Ferraro go. Then this becomes a gutter war.

...it'll mean that Clinton will lose face. Getting her own back from that will result in the race sinking lower... and it can always sink lower.

of an interview better than Chuck Shumer. She hasn't been getting the exposure she used to but that was one tough cookie. She always knew where reporters where going before they did and just cut them off.
The true testament of that woman, was while Bob Dole could become human and likeable by advertising a product, she just became colder and tougher. Must have given coke the cola war with her Pepsi Ads.

But I'm not surprised. I had the misfortune to listen to Geraldine Ferraro give a speech back in January. It basically consisted of her whining about how nobody knew who she was anymore and how cool it would be to have a woman president and how she's a partner at some law firm and she likes to make her calls personally and the secretary at the other firm asked her how to spell her name and Hillary's awesome. The consensus among those of us unfortunate enough to hear her was that she was just bitter about losing in 1984. She's living vicariously through Hillary, and if Hillary doesn't get the nomination, suffice it to say that Ferraro's head might explode.
in 1984, the Mondale-Ferraro ticket lost 59-41 in the popular vote, and 525-13 in the EC -- garnering only MN, Mondale's home state, and DC.
So if she escaped your notice, don't feel that you were not paying attention, you just didn't have your radar tuned to hummingbird-size objects....

She was Mondale's VP pick. The only reason ANYBODY knows who she is at all is because Mondale basically bent over and took orders from NOW and picked a woman VP.

Hey Ferraro, NOBODY WOULD KNOW OR CARE WHO YOU ARE IF IT WEREN'T FOR THE FACT YOU WERE A WOMAN!
That's the ironic thing. I don't think what she said about Obama is true, but it's completely obvious that nobody would know who she is if Mondale hadn't picked her, and he didn't even really hide the fact that he picked her because she's a woman.
Ever heard of projection Ms. Ferraro?

Like her or not, SHE'S RIGHT. And we all know what would happen if someone on OUR side were talking about this. Just ask Rush.
She's got some cohones saying Obama better watch out because he'll need her for fundraising if he gets the nod.

The eye roll before Obama's quote came up is priceless.
Freedom and religion endure together, or perish alone. --Mitt Romney
...this is just another example of how everyone, even the libs themselves are falling all over themselves over this whole thing.
The sad part is, the message she was trying to get across, that if Obama was a white guy (John Edwards) he simply wouldn't be in this situation, which has been overshadowed by the falling bodies and grunts of anguish on behalf of the participants, is true.
He would of been just another guy on the stage, and gone long ago.
"Back in the thirties we were told we must collectivize the nation because the people were so poor. Now we are told we must collectivize the nation because the people are so rich." ~ William F. Buckley, Jr.
If Obama was a white guy, he wouldn't be in this situation. He'd already have the nomination wrapped up.
One could at least make the argument that if Jack Ryan's divorce documents had not come to light, the odds are close to 50/50 that Obama would not be a US Senator right now?
And if the Clintons, the Clintons...losing 90% of the black vote, and getting 70+% of the White vote doesn't tell you whats really going on, you're living in la la land.
"Back in the thirties we were told we must collectivize the nation because the people were so poor. Now we are told we must collectivize the nation because the people are so rich." ~ William F. Buckley, Jr.
I still see red when I remember that entire episode. And the replacement was %$#@/&! Alan Keyes ...?!!
would have made me a proud Obama Republican.
"I believe we must adjourn this meeting to some other place." - The last recorded words of Adam Smith.
If Alan Keyes were running, I would be voting Republican for the presidency this year.
So you do have limits. And you insist I vote for John Mccain.
I know one thing. I won't be voting for the democrat either.
And unfortunately not unusual. Jack Ryan drops out? No candidates left, call Alan Keyes in Maryland. Governor Rounds won't run in SD? Go ahead and hand Johnson another 6 years of "moderation" in the US Senate. Govenor Hoeven won't run in ND? Go ahead and give Conrad and Dorgan lifetime terms. Huckabee won't run in Arkansas? Give Pryor a lifetime seat, God knows we only have ONE potential candidate in Arkansas. And on it goes. Frustrating as hell.
And sorry for continuing the threadjacking, but I think Huckabee would have given Pryor a very serious run. But that's what frustrate me. If our one, two at most candidates, don't run for a Senate seat, we just concede the seat to the Dem for life. Thank goodness for John Kennedy in Louisiana. Otherwise, that nitwit Landrieu would probably be in the US Senate until she is 80. We give it one initial try when its an open seat, and then let these liberal Dems in red/purple states stay in office basically uncontested.
We are doing it in Iowa, Montana and South Dakota this year. Dems go after us in Rhode Island, Maine, and other blue/purple states while our top potential candidates cower in fear of the liberal Dem incumbents in red/purple states.
on any of the other points.
I can't agree WRT Pryor though. This seat really is his birthright. His father made it so. Short of a dead girl in his bed, he's going to have this seat until he doesn't want it anymore. What Huck needs to do is to remain active on the national scene. Campaign for other R's, give speeches and encourage the other R's in AR to make a bench. Then he needs to challenge Blanche Lincoln in 2010. She is an absolute do-nothing senator and he should be able to knock her off easily without too much effort.
I do think we are seeing people stay out given that the GOP brand isn't so popular right now. I suspect in 2010, we might see a few more willing to step forward.
Have you considered switching parties?
The Fuzzy Puppy of the VRWC. I've been usurped!
Says the man whose party ran a bunch of white dudes. Whose campaigns were staffed by a bunch of white dudes.
The Democrats are going to be nominating either a woman or a black guy. The Republicans didn't even have one in the running.
I'm not going to say that this implies anything about Republicans, but it certainly does imply that if there is a party filled with racists, it isn't the Democrats. Project much?
JC Watts, Micheal Steele, Ken Blackwell, Condi Rice, etc. aren't running. A lot of us used to like Alan Keyes too, until he kinda "lost it" in 2000.
See, we Republicans aren't obsessed with skin color like the Dems are. We care about actual policy positions and values, you know, SUBSTANCE. We don't care if he (or she) is white or black or brown or whatever.
Particularly one who just complained about how a Democratic candidate's race is harming him in his own primary.

When I make fun of people and they fight back, I get mad! Boo-hoo!
If you want to ban me, that's cool. It's your site, after all. But for a man whose entire online persona consists of snarky one-liners* and passive-aggressive attacks dressed up as "advice"**, you've got a pretty thin skin.
To end my (honestly, pretty enjoyable, for me anyway) stay here at RedState, I'll address the substance of your comment:
This year, Democrats had a woman, a latino man, a black man, and a gnome in the running for our Presidential nomination. And we are going to be nominating either a woman or a black man. Yes, there are racists in the Democratic party. But not so many that it forces us to run a bunch of white dudes and nominate a white dude.
*How's that RedState 3.0 thing coming along? You know, Penny-Arcade lived on donations for several years and all they do is make a comic strip three days a week. You guys can't even raise $25K to prepare the site for the ultimate showdown that will decide the fate of America. It must burn, deep down in your dark soul, that Kos was able to monetize, write a book, and get gigs talking on national TV, when you guys sold out to some publishing company that now won't even support a site update.
**Really, stuff like this is priceless coming from a man whose party just nominated John "tax cuts for the rich" and "I'd want my daughter to have the option of getting an abortion" McCain:
Why, yes, that will mean offering up all of your principles - particularly those on the War in Iraq - as a sacrifice to the Democratic Party Establishment. Is this a problem for you? I can't imagine why: by now the progressive movement has certainly practiced the procedure enough to be actually rather good at it. Besides, isn't that why they keep you around, anyway? To give them what they need, when they need it?
Toodles!
My, my: point out one unintended confession of racism by someone about that someone's own party and people get so touchy.
On second thought, don't switch parties. You've made your peace with yours, it's clear.
The Fuzzy Puppy of the VRWC. I've been usurped!
Yahhh, D's get 90% of the black vote, and until 2004, basically NEVER ran a black outside of a black majority district. And in that case, it was only when their preferred candidate imploded due to a sex scandal.
Keep digging jerk.
"I ain't never votin' fo another Democrat so long as I can draw breath! I'll vote for a dog first!" - Leola Thomas
The fact that Democrats get 90% of the black vote should give you a pretty good idea of who the black community feels best represents their interests.
The democrats steal from society at large, keep most of the proceeds and give just enough to the blacks so they don't do worse and in such a way they can't do any better.
Thats your proof your party isn't racist ?

They can Idolize FDR but go nuts over the rights President Bush took away from them.
For them Republicans were are and always will be the racists. They will never let little things like ours being the party of Lincoln and Desegregation get in the way of that. Nor will they ever notice that FDR imprisoned americans solely on the basis their skin was yellow or that they have a Klansman sitting in the senate.

If Bill Clinton gets charged with using dirty, racial politics for calling an Obama position a "fairy tale," how in the world will serious questions be raised by McCain, old white guy that he is?
"Back in the thirties we were told we must collectivize the nation because the people were so poor. Now we are told we must collectivize the nation because the people are so rich." ~ William F. Buckley, Jr.
In the beginning, Obama was a "feel good" affirmative action type candidate early evidenced by the "rock star" label from the media that came out of nowhere. He eventually caught the attention of people and things rolled from there.

Huh. Just watched the updated video. At least she's under no illusions about 1984.
Actually, my respect for her just went up a little. She did a pretty good job making her case that this whole thing is silly.
I agree it's not a racist thing to say, I'm not not sure it's true. After all, he won Iowa which is what started it all. If anything, I think it's Clinton's race-baiting that's driven blacks into his corner and whites into Clinton's corner.
"I ain't never votin' fo another Democrat so long as I can draw breath! I'll vote for a dog first!" - Leola Thomas
I pretty much agree with everything Geraldine said.
I have, in fact, been telling my husband basically the same thing for the last two months.
but probably true to some extent. While Obama as a white guy still may have done well, I bet he wouldn't have done as well against Hillary.
I do think Hillary has been race baiting though, and that race baiting has been dividing the party up along racial lines.
I think there are going to be plenty of race cards played in the general, if Obama wins the nomination. I think crying "racist" at every attack add will quickly become old though, and I think it may drive people away from Obama as much as bring them to him. Obama has the AA vote wrapped up, but driving away the Clinton voters and swingers in the middle by seeing a racist around every corner isn't going to make them too likely to vote for him.
He would have been the Dem nominee after his 11 straight wins. Your telling me that a white man with great oratorical skills, youngish, and intelligent would have done WORSE than Obama. Naaa! LOL!
Don't think so

... is that he would not have had the eleven straight wins. To paraphrase Billy Jeff, there is no there there; a white male with his stellar experience, solid record of accomplishment and firm grasp of the issues would never have made it TO, let alone through, Iowa.

When I see "AA" I think Alchoholic Anonymous and then wonder why those folks are getting dragged into the discussion.
I just think Ferraro had the guts to say what so many others have been thinking but were too timid to voice. Seriously, in what other context could an empty-suit, first term Senator with no experience and no record and no realistic policy proposals stand a snowball's chance at the presidency?
If we as a nation were not so busy "making history" by voting for the first black president, we would be preoccupied with laughing our backsides off at the mere thought of such a candidacy. A white Obama would have been another Kucinich.
RandomGuy, if you'd watched the video, you'd see that Ferraro admitted she wouldn't have been the VPOTUS nominee in '84 if she was "Gerald" Ferraro. She made an analogy to Obama in '08.
What's so funny about Clinton's minions saying this about Obama is that if Hillary had not been married to the AG of Arkansas, she would probably not have been hired by the Rose Law Firm, had she not been married to the govenor of Arkansas she probably would not have been made a partner at the Rose Law Firm, had she not been married to the Presiden the US, she would definitely not have been elected senator from New York, etc.
I'm not in the advising Obama biz, but my response to her about the "qualifications" issue would be something along the lines of, I have attended office parties at my Wife's place of employment, I have been to her office, I have looked over her shoulder while she performed work related functions....however, none of that makes me any more able to do her job than Hillary is qualified to do her Husband's former job.
The video wasn't there when I commented. It was an update.
Anyhow, I have since left another comment. Scroll around, you'll see it.
"I ain't never votin' fo another Democrat so long as I can draw breath! I'll vote for a dog first!" - Leola Thomas
If Obama were a black woman with the same speaking style, she'd have wrapped up the Dem nomination on Super Tuesday and people would be asking 'Hillary who?'
I've always maintained the safest refuge for racism was to become a member of the Democratic Party. Whether on the local or national political stage, you could hold back minorities by opposing school choice and other matters designed to help ALL people, but particular minorities from the safety of your Democratic Party cloak. Ex-Klansman? Join the Democratic Party and have your sins washed away. Against school choice? Join the Democratic Party, run for a local or state office, vote to rename a street MLK and your sins are washed away.
This Obama v. Clinton race is fun and getting funner!
What would we give to be in the inner circle of Hillary or Barack's advisers to listen to the discussions. What they have used against Republicans for years is not working when they are fighting each other.
Our best hope is that they do destroy each other so McCain has a better chance in the fall. If the work it out and band together, not only will we lose the White House, but may lose 5-6 Senate seats and 20-30 House seats.
Would be much more fun if it was not for the fact that one of these two can be President.
This is a typical tactic. The blacks within the party are trying to parse her as a racist so she has to spend 2 days rebutting it. Also, since Ferraro is a key ally to Hillary I would think that removing her in anyway would help Obama.
It's a tough sell to say the words were taken out of context. This tactic can be used on anybody. I don't think her words were taken out of context when she told Obama to shove it. She was very clear and on point.
If I was Obama I would fear the Hispanic bloc more. Blacks are the 2nd largest minority behind Hispanics. Hispanics like Hillary. If there is a recount in Florida, she will take the state. Nelson wants a mail-in vote because Obama has a better ground game than Hillary (i.e., caucus voting).
There is a bit of propaganda to be learned here:
1. Call someone a racist.
2. Ask for them to resign.
3. The accuser then claims they are above it all and the accuser states something like "now is not the time for divisive politics." Perhaps a feel good quote about the children or the poor (Obama's tv interview this a.m.)
4. The accuser must try and appear with a group of diverse people within 3-5 days for a photo opportunity.
The only way to deal with it is for her (Ferraro) to continue to fight Obama and for Ferraro to refuse to bow and to do the following:
1. Call the accuser a racist and give new examples.
2. State that the accuser has a history of negative comments or support for their minority group (Obama) and that you (Ferraro) have a history of championing minorities, which she does by the way.
3. The accused then claims "now is not the time for divisive politics." Perhaps a feel good quote about the children or the poor. (Ferraro's interview on GMA).
BTW - Hillary's comment that this was a time to focus on the issues was perfect. She avoided the food fight when Obama dealt with it directly. He should have a surrogate do that for him, perhaps a female on his staff.
John
...is that when Obama loses to McCain in November, having received over 90% of the black vote, but only 40% of the white vote, the same MSM that is taking her to task now will be the ones crying that America is still a racist nation, white males are racist,... blah, blah, blah.
