We'll skip Hillary Clinton's empty and hollow victory except to note that with Florida and Michigan in her win column, she now wants the states to send delegates to the Democratic National Convention. Of course, because the Democratic National Committee was upset at the way in which the two states scheduled their primaries, they decreed that Florida and Michigan could not send delegates to the convention. Other candidates agreed to this and did not campaign in Florida or Michigan. Hillary Clinton campaigned and "won." If you think that this is opportunism run amok, you are probably right. But I guess that's the result of being driven to a near fury by Barack Obama.

Now to the Republicans. My friend, the great and good Joshua Trevino believes that Mitt Romney has won something of a stealth victory. I disagree. While Romney did indeed capture some important demographics, McCain is widely seen as the winner. With winning comes momentum and with momentum comes an eventual aura of inevitability as far as achieving the Republican nomination is concerned. Rudy Giuliani is dropping out of the race and will endorse McCain tomorrow. That will give McCain even more momentum going into the debate at the Reagan Library. Romney will fight on and Huckabee may have some chances to make waves in a week. But it is McCain's to lose and I don't think he'll lose it.

Of course, this means that McCain will have to prepare himself for the fight over policy in the fall. Which also means that he will need to get himself some good ideas people concerning the issues of the day. I suggest Megan McArdle on the issue of pharmaceuticals. I trust I am not getting ahead of myself here and if it needs to be said, I believe that if the GOP eventually selects a different nominee, that person ought to allow himself to be advised by Megan. So, for that matter, should the eventual Democratic nominee, though I understand that this would entail giving up a demagogic talking point.

McCain actually advocating a policy that doesn't demonize the drug companies would be at a level of flip-flopping that he's blasted Romney for. But I'd love to see his "straight talk" wiggle he way out of that.

On Human Events, it was mentioned that the DNC could reinstate Florida delegates. How possible is this? It seems that it would be very unfair to Barrack who did not campaign there because of the DNC ruling no delegates...
If she plays dirty enough-she could possibly end up getting those delegates and essentially "steal" the nomination? Anyone got any more info on this?

What's going to happen come the convention is that the convention will vote on whether to seat the Michigan delegates, and it will vote to do so, so it will be done. Then it will do the same for the Florida delegates.

And yes, some will call that stealing the nomination, if they provide her margin of victory over Obama. Moe Lane has had several articles on the front page about this if you want to search a bit.

I personally find that extremely unfair. (Not that I find that surprising). I don't think Hillary should push for it. The dems agreed to not campaign there, and then she did (under the premise that she had "fundraising" events to attend). If candidates were told delegates there would not count and they agreed not to campaign there, but then she did and THEN got it overturned...I hope Obama does not wimp out on that issue. To me it sounds like one that should be fought.
Anyway, thanks for the explanation in layman's terms.

You really think they would be bothered by changing the rules after they've agreed to them?

I'm hearing the fat lady signing but I think it's just shock. Maybe after reading a few more columns like Trevino's I'll feel better.

Go ahead, make your jokes, Mr. Jokey... Joke-maker. But let me hit you with some knowledge. Quit now.

EDWARDS DROPS OUT

Huh? Link?

I thought for sure he'd stay in the gum up the works and hurt Hillary. Rumor is that he's stalking to be Obama's AG.

Its not often you get to see suicide committed on television. But that is what happened last night in Fl. Rush was correct that a McCain nomination would destroy the Republican party. Bottom line a McCain guarantees an amnesty bill gets passed. It would have passed last year, but the congress became afraid of the "folks". However, if Mr. Amnesty McCain can get the nomination whether he wins or not, it tells the others that amnesty doesn't really matter. It says that talk radio and blogs may make noise but they don't have any real power. Of course once the bill is signed the GOP is no more, solid red states like NC which hasn't voted for a dem since 1976 will turn blue. The future doesn't look very bright, Hugh Hewitt tries to paint a possible "fight the good fight" scenario, but the MSM will give McCain a huge bump out of FL and Mitt doesn't have the money to counteract it in 22 states. Plus the Rudy endorsement all but gives NY, NJ, and CT to McCain and he won't have to worry about spending money there; also McCain's support among Hispanics will give a large piece of CA along with its moderate GOPers. On top of which Huckabee is staying in to attack Romney and aid McCain in Southern states. I don't mean to be depressing, but you may be witnessing the end of the nation as we know it.
