Fred Fixes A Date

An End to Hunt for Fred October

By California Yankee Posted in Comments (35) / Email this page » / Leave a comment »

Fred Thompson's new campaign manager, Bill Lacy, forces out communications director Linda Rozett and suddenly we have a date for Fred's announcement:

Sources tell numerous outlets that Thompson will announce his campaign September 4th, and that he will participate in his first debate on September 27 at Morgan State University in Baltimore. His first major appearance at a GOP event will be at the Mackinac Republican Leadership Conference in Michigan around a week earlier.

Read on.

Fred's campaign must be paying attention and catching on.

Scott Rasmussen doesn't think much of the media story line that it is a mistake for Fred to delay his announcement:

However, the polls show Thompson remains more of a threat to Giuliani's lead that Romney. His support is down a bit from its peak, but he's still showing a lot of potential. As Rasmussen Reports has noted many times in recent months, that may change when Thompson does enter the race for real. But, it may not.

]. . .]

Those who really understand the game know that spring training victories don't count once the regular season begins.

The delay doesn't bothers me. What bothers me is the constant shifting of the date, which makes the campaign look second-rate at best. But, like Rasmussen says, that's what spring training is all about.

He bypassed Iowa. He has a campaign manager and it sounds like that campaign manager has pruned the last person he wanted to before they got rolling.

Time to put up or shut up, Fred.

participated anyways if he was an announced candidate? Probably not seeing the both Rudy & McCain passed on it.

I've been a Fred supporter since early March and I'm glad to see he's finally ready to enter the race. I will admitt that the shifting timeline has frustrated me. I still think he could become the frontrunner within a month of his announcement, but he must make the most of each and every day. The excuse that people aren't paying attention won't fly anymore.

He had the buzz and if jumped in June he would have had mojo. The longer he waits the more people will yawn when he gets in.

Floria, Cali, NY ... its called delagates.

You are going to have a pro gun control, drag queen, homesecual tolerating, baby killer as your candidate. You can call him Ronnie Jr. if you like but lipstick on a pig is worthless.

Check his numbers against HillC in Ohio. Thats ballgame folks. Hillary and the Democrats win.

Clean up in Larry's stall. Moe probably "helped" make the mess. You Republicans are all alike.

Do you enjoy being a homophobic bigot?

Considering that it was enough to get me to log on while finishing my blipping move. I wish that you guys would learn that this isn't the place to safely express your hatred of gay people.

No, not really back.

not what many Repubs project unto him. He is NOT Reagan, he is NOT Goldwater. I hope Fred is a great candidate, I hope he wows us and wins the White House. But hope is worth a cup of coffee if you give it $2.00.

The fact is Fred has be hesitant to join the race. People can say he is some svengali and has figured out something all other candidates have not. People can say whatever they want, if they want to believe something, reasons are not hard to come up with.

The reality is that Fred is no saviour, he is a potential candidate with strengths and weaknesses. Oddly, many Repubs se in Fred what they want to see, they do not like the current crop so they project their dream candidate unto Fred.

The reality is Fred has strenths and weaknesses. His greatest weakness among politicos is the idea that he really does not want to be the president. That he is not willing, or desirous of doing the "hard work" of winning the presidency and then performing said work. The question is, does his constant delaying his entrance into this race strengthen or weaken that argument? No one is questioning Gingrich, they know he is ambitious.

Look at Powerline blog tonight, their top story is questioning Fred's desire to run for president and win. If what I am telling you is news, then you need to do some more due diligence. We all know he is pro 2A, we all know he is for smaller government, we all know he is anti abortion. The question is, does he really really want to be the President of the United States?

Molon Labe!

and you need the fire in the belly. But I can name too many people (Hillary!, Algore, probably Kerry since before he plotted his naval career, etc.) who have wanted this so desperately for so long that it all but scares me to death. Desperately wanting the presidency has become a huge black mark in recent years. It's like a sickness. One of the many things Dems hold against Bush is that he never wanted the presidency desperately (or even thought much about it) until late in his political career. My personal opinion is career politicians are destroying this country.

Once Fred gets in, if he shows the sufficient grit and determination (among other things), that will keep me on his side. But to fight the Clinton machine he is going to have to fight long and hard and not be afraid to hit her hard. I don't blame him for not wanting to start last spring, though my enthusiasm was off the charts then.

I'm not saying he will, but Fred has the potential to wipe the floor with R and D candidates alike.

You may not be interested in war, but war is interested in you.

than fire in the belly. The sort of 'personally I would rather stay home with beautiful wife, take care of my newborn baby, and continue to earn more money than I would as President, but as I survey the field of potential candidates, I find the need of my country outweighs my personal desires, and I therefore am running for President. I believe I can lead us to a successful conclusion of the Iraqi front in the GWOT. I know we must confront the social security and medicare problems with solutions that grow our economy instead of destroying it, and I will lead the effort to accomplish these things for the improvement of our country.'

I think that sort of approach will reassure people who are tired of crass my-position-is-based-on-polling-data approach that seems to symbolize the current bunch of politicos. People are tired of politicians playing the political angle and doing the politically correct thing. I think they are looking for a patriot who is just like them, only willing to take on the presidency for them. The posts Fred has made on this site project just that kind of image, as did his Micheal Moore take-down.

Has anyone considered that he might make an outstanding Naval Observatory resident as Mitt's or Rudy's #2? Just putting it out there.

Regardless, September 4 is the perfect time to get in. It'll be right after Labor Day when most people are back from vacations and paying attention again.

Just my two cents - I think he'll help us cement our differences between us and the Hillary/Edwards/Obama triumverate of failed ideas.

"I just disproved my own argument. Where's my degree from Paul Maguire University??" -- Bill Simmons

Will be interesting to see how this plays out. At the Iowa State Fair he indicated that he would be a frequent visitor to Iowa.

Now let's hear how he presents himself on the 27th. Then, if he does a good job and lays out an agenda I like, I'll consider him serious enough to support next WInter in the primaries.

James Hansen - Scott THomas Beauchamp with a PhD.

but apparently neither is anyone else. The numbers for the Republican candidates are static, some would say stagnant. Rudy leads, but can't break 30%. Mitt and McCain each garner equal amounts of electoral disdain, and are stuck at less than 15% each. McCain gained a point or two, Mitt seems to have lost a point or two, in spite of the surprising and overwhelming success at Ames! Imagine! (Disclaimer: Mitt is my last choice.)

Fred's numbers are also stuck, but stuck in a high second-place position. Not bad for a non-candidate. Has the non-candidacy of Fred frozen the polls until he announces one way or the other? Ditto Republican contributions?

For those on the "Fred the Tease" bandwagon, there is still that nagging issue of Law and Order. During the Reagan campaign, the FCC ruled that even an old Reagan movie would be considered a campaign appearance. Any such appearance would require equal time for Reagan's opponents, should they ask for it. Fred has the same problem with L&O. His employer, NBC, may not want him to open that can of worms.

So is Fred teasing? Or is Fred waiting until the season is over Aug 31, to keep from creating problems for himself and his employer? Since Fred is going to announce AFTER Aug 31, I suspect it's the second. Fred is doing the right thing for his employer.

Fred and NBC have announced that once he is a candidate TV episodes in which he appears will not run. This was out weeks (months?) ago.

that's why I noted that the season ends Aug 31. That is actually the end of the rerun season for 2007. Fred announces on Sept x (pick a date around Labor Day). Reruns over, NBC made their rerun season, no sticky problems with equal time.

That's why Fred is waiting, not because he is being coy.
Please read the last paragraph. I really thought it was easy.

well, Still dead, anyway.

No worries about equal time, anyway...

"I will never accept defeat.
"I will never quit.
"I will never leave a fallen comrade."

The fairness doctrine applies to ANY news coverage. Equal time applies to campaigning opportunities and is still enforceable.

Not mind you, that I think Equal time isn't at least as suspect as the fairness doctrine was, just that it has not been overturned, or the legislative rug pulled out from under it. And given SCOTUS upheld McCain-Feingold, I'm not sure I want to provide them an opportunity to officially undermine our rights again.

"I Will Always Place The Mission First.
"I will never accept defeat.
"I will never quit.
"I will never leave a fallen comrade."

If Fred and NBC said it, and they did, there is no purpose in the suppositional tone of your post.

do and say things that are meaningful.
Coy does not work so well in this day and age, and the long fan dance has not been flattering.
I like him and if he will actually do something, I will watch closely. So far there has been nothing to see.

But ultimately Clark was recruited because of his uniform, not for the man in it.

FDT is being recruited beacuse he can communicate our ideas effectively.

I'm afraid only a 1 line statement will require a further explanation. I'm slow, so please lay it out for me...simple. Because I fail to see any connection.

Can you break down your logic on this statement. I fail to see any connection. You know how we are here in the South...so slow!!!!

Thanks

....Wesley Clark was the "savior" of the Democrat field in 2004 before bombing out big time. Obviously, Fred hasn't bombed out yet, but expectations are set way too high for this guy. George Will commented that Fred is a "rorshac (spelling) test". He had a short, decent, but undistinguished career in the Senate and is primarily known for his acting. Because of that, he is annointed as the next Ronald Reagan. I have to say, I don't see it right now - but I could be wrong.

We need a energetic, fiesty, and tough candidate if we are going to compete against the Clinton War Room next year. Fred may be a nice, slow-talking southern gentleman, but I don't see him being able to compete in a knockdown vicious campaign against Clinton, Inc.

Does it really matter when you show your cards, or does the best hand still win? Most of the strategists here are critiquing how he is playing the game. I don't think that is as important as the message. Being able to articulate it is already Fred's long suit.

I think Fred has the best hand and could likely announce his candidacy on day 2 of the convention and still win the nomination. I've been getting his emailed newsletters. He's saying the right stuff, repeatedly.

"We’re not having the kind of conversations we need to have on a range of issues, particularly the kind of threat we’re facing, on a global scale from radical Muslim fundamentalists who want to bring our nation to its knees and destroy our way of life.

We’re pointing fingers rather than finding solutions to the big challenges that face our economy and our prosperity. And for the first time in our history, we have a government that can’t do all the basic things we expect our government to do.

We need to be talking about these things and how to get back to first principles. And if you know me, you know my answers are not bigger government and more bureaucracy and higher taxes. It’s just the opposite."

Good stuff.
