Hey, Let's Beat Up On Their Wives

I don't recall Newsweak and others doing hit jobs on John McCain's wife, MItt Romney's wife, or any of the other wives, with the exception of Judy Giuliani.
Isn't that interesting? The two guys who are leading the polls on the GOP side, instead of regular sustained attacks on them, Newsweak goes after their wives.
Judy, of course, has been portrayed as the home wrecker. The media narrative on Jeri now seems to be deadbeat money grubber. I won't repeat the allegations here, but you can read them yourself.
I can't seem to recall a potential candidate's wife getting beaten up in the press. And that's just it, apparently the left fears Fred so much, they feel like they've got to try to abort his campaign.
What next? The Fred Thompson bastard child stories I guess? They did it with Bush, Sr., hell, they even did it with Bill Clinton. I guess they'll try that one next.
Oh, and I would point that this stands in marked contrast to the flattering portrayals of Elizabeth Edwards and Michele Obama. It seems mighty weak when the MSM feels the need to go after a candidate's wife after drumming up stories -- not true by the way -- that the candidate's wife is running his campaign.

Oh, and the right didn't beat up on Clinton's wife for eight years???

Two comments, two brief, rude comments. Clean it up and stay, don't and don't.

We are all heroes, you and Boo and I. Hamsters and rangers everywhere, rejoice!
But Hillary Rodham...
...made herself a target during the campaign by maligning the cookie-bakers of the world (sorry, Mom)
AND
...made herself a target after the election by assuming the role of co-President.
I seem to remember Kitty Dukakis getting beat up in the press pretty badly.
And McCain had similar stories about his wife and her addictions back in 2000 that's old news now.
They're writing about Jeri because that's all there is to write about with Fred until he stops testing the waters and buzzing the flies and saddles up for his 8 seconds
Fred is not a potential candidate. He's an actual candidate who just hasn't gone all in yet. It's like in the WWF when they have the Battle Royal and another wrestler enters the ring every few minutes. Fred is like Hulk Hogan back in the 80s. Everyone knows he's the last one in. In the mean time, like they did in Casablanca, they just wait...and wait...wand wait...and wait...
As for Rudy and Judy, there is a messy history there, it's not like they're making this up out of thin air.
On the dem side, we all know why Elizabeth Edwards gets good press as well Michelle Obama. I suspect if Michelle Obama had met Barack while he was still married, we'd probably hear about that as well.
That said, the media will do everything possible to help out the Democrats. It's just something you have to deal with. How many people read Newsweek anyway? I also highly suspect that once Hillary is the nominee, we won't be hearing so much about the GOP candidates and their spouses and possible infidelity or womanizing. Just a hunch.
...have always been a thorn in his side, even here in NY when he was Mayor. The man was recovering from prostate cancer, and all you heard about was his personal life. The media loves a juicy personal story and they will always go for it, it sells newspapers...what few they do sell.
Many people have miserable lives, especially when it comes to personal relationships, and they love to hear that people "In The News" have the same problems.
As for why the tree killers always go after them, that's easy, it kills more trees and puts a few more shekels in their dwindling coffers...
...I'm just sayin'

Did I mention, they are having trouble selling newpapers?

Do you mean to be suggesting that this is all the fault of those nasty, nasty Jews, or is this just some unfortunate turn of phrase that you picked up somewhere without quite recognizing the anti-semitic overtones?
I'm pretty sure that the New York City tablloids won't be getting any shekels, as the news stands take American currency rather than Isreali.
It's a common phrase and it is certainly not anti-semitic. No more than saying, "...put a few more pence in their pockets." would be anti-English.
I meant what I said and I said what I meant. An elephant's faithful 100 percent.
Better to have the dirty laundry out now than be surprised next year. Fred Thompson is a target rich candidate and will get shot down inevitably.
Of the multiple sad tales about his past one is bound to put off just about every cross section of the electorate. It's just a matter of them getting the information. And with Hillary's $100 million warchest you an bet they will. Thompson has raised how much again? The man is toast.
All one-hit-wonders.
...when they see me they'll say, "There goes Loren Wallace,
the greatest thing to ever climb into a race car."
Let's face it, by *any* criteria, some candidate's spouses are more and less interesting to the Media. In 1992, Hillary was more interesting to the Media than either Barbara Bush or Margot Perot. Most of what made Hillary interesting, IMO was the fact that she had worked outside the home and the resultant money issues (Whitewater) which she had just as much as Bill.
In the current election, on the Democratic side, the spouses of the three front runners all have practiced law, but I think everyone has more or less made up their mind about what they think about Bill Clinton, Elizabeth Edwards is being mostly dealt with as a Cancer survivor story and Michelle Obama is not really dealt with as a separate story (as best as I can tell).
Of the top tier Republicans spousal issues, Giuliani's marital issues would be too delicious not to talk about regardless of party (R,D or I), Fred Thompson's wife seems more involved in the campaign than most (and given her background, likely useful), McCain's wife was mostly dealt with in 2000 (although his second marriage) and Romney doesn't appear to have any issues.
IMO, the only real sign on the MSM really taking sides on beating up the spouses of the candidates is when they start doing negative cover stories on Ann Romney. :)

It's messy, it's unpleasant, and there's a whole lot of bad judgement shown in how things were handled.
If you think that a man's private character influences their political decisions, than Rudy has some real issues -- his personal life makes Clinton's look tame. Where Clinton lied to keep things private, Rudy held press conferences.
If the nominees are Rudy and Hillary, I'll just turn off the TV, stop reading papers and vote by party. I don't need to hear about all that over and over and over again.
But I'm not sure why anyone bothers to look into Fred Thompson's life, or profile his wife. If he won't declare, don't cover him. He's as bad as Mario Cuomo in 1988 (or was that 1992?).
