Consistently Inconsistent

Less than three months after John Kerry said he intends to stay out of the 2008 presidential campaign, the Democrats' losing 2004 presidential candidate reopened the door to a possible 2008 presidential campaign.

Answering a question from a viewer on a television call-in program, about whether his decision not to run could change Kerry said:

It might. It may change over years. It may change over months. I can't tell you, but I've said very clearly I don't consider myself out of it forever.

Kerry continues to be consistent in his inconsistency. Read on ...

In fairness, even Kerry thinks it unlikely he will seek the 2008 presidential nomination. When asked whether he would change his mind in time for the 2008 race, Kerry said:

If suddenly the field changed or the dynamics of the nation shifted, who knows? You might look at it differently, but I don't see that. I don't foresee that. That's not where I am today and that's not what I'm doing.

That was yesterday, what will he say tomorrow?

Mr Kerry, the man whose picture graced the wall of a North Vietnamese War Museum in Hanoi as a hero of their Revolution, is still thinking about running for the highest office in the land of their enemy? The man who lied in front of the Congress about the American Military behaving like the raping, pillaging hordes led by Genghis Khan, still thinks about becoming President? The man who alledly threw his Purple Hearts over the White House fence still thinks you will vote for him versus somebody genuine like John McCain?
I think the quietest statement of the 2004 election speaks the loudest about Mr Kerry today. The American Communist Party in 2004 declined to field a candidate against John Kerry because they found Mr Kerry so much to their liking. Apparently the leadership of the ACP could recognize a 'Duck' when they saw one.

...but, actually, the CPUSA hasn't fielded a presidential candidate since 1984 when (the late, not-so-great) "Red Gus" Hall was still running.

So it's a bit of a half-truth to say that they didn't field a candidate in '04 because Kerry struck them as A-OK. They didn't field a candidate -- and it's certainly true that they longed hard for Bush's defeat, which necessarily means they wanted Kerry to win.

That's the half that's true. But they haven't been fielding candidates in two decades. So there was nothing particularly special about Kerry that made them decide not to field anybody. That part is myth.

Here's a link to the Snopes page on the subject.

as this pathetic specimen of a cowardly liar promised.

Kerry was against it before he was for it (running in 2008)

You can bet your life he might.

I think what Kerry is hinting, to the extent he makes any sense at all, is that if Hillary and Obama destroy each other, and if the other candidates seem beatable, then Kerry might jump in the race. Perhaps chosen at a deadlocked convention.

However, lots of Democrats say Al Gore would be their choice in a situation like that. It's tough to imagine the Dems picking Kerry for anything.

I think Democrats got behind Kerry, Botox and all, in 2004 simply because it was he who came out as the forced frontrunner, because Terry McAuliffe wanted someone to come out ahead early in the primary season. If Obama reduces himself to Hillary Clinton's level of shamelessness and spite, Kerry will be seen as a palatable and familiar alternative, albeit in relative terms. This is probably the same thinking that makes anyone want to draft Al Gore into the race at all.

I get the feeling too that the netroots, really far left Dems really like Gore. Instead of waffling like before, ever since Gore lost, he has been consistent, and hard, hard left. He was one of the first and strongest against the Iraq War. Some of his attacks on Republicans have been so extreme they are almost raving. And of course, he devotes his whole life to fighting global warming.

It was a logical tactic for Gore. He realized that no one wins the Presidency without first winning the primaries. So he set out to position himself to win the core of his party, and is not worrying about the next step he would need to take, winning the general election.

...desperate attempt to remain relevant, especially after such embarrassments as this:

democrat nomination he would be easy to beat. However I think they wouldn't nominate him this time around.

he would just go home.

I hear they have good windsurfing there.

I can't wait to write another check to SwiftVets. John O'Neill is an American hero.

Seriously, John Kerry entering the '08 race would be great news if for no other reason than the comedy value he would bring to the race. I'll have to lay in a supply of popcorn.

Anxiously waiting for the (there will be only one) debate between Kerry and Fred Thompson...
