"Lo, He Comes With Clouds Descending"

In one of the more shockingly presumptuous acts I have ever witnessed in Presidential politics, a non-incumbent candidate for the Presidency of the United States has actually taken the time to design a seal for himself that resembles the Great Seal of the United States and the Seal of the President of the United States.

Consider me officially gobsmacked. Bear in mind that all of this means (a) someone proposed this idea to the top levels of the Obama campaign, (b) the top levels of the Obama campaign agreed that it was a good idea, (c) the candidate himself may have had a hand in designing and tweaking the logo, (d) someone with a knowledge of Latin was sought out in order to translate "Yes, We Can" into the language of the Caesars (repeat that last bit to yourself a time or two to grasp the full significance of how important this matter apparently was to the Obama campaign) and (e) there was no one in the campaign who perhaps nervously cleared his or her throat and piped up with the words "um . . . folks, given all of our concerns about the Imperial Presidency, as articulated during the Bush-Cheney Administration, doesn't anyone else think that it might be . . . er . . . well . . . a little hypocritical for us to be doing this kind of thing?"

What Barack Obama could learn from King Canute has already been noted, but not only has the Obama campaign refused to take note of Canute's modesty, they have transcended their earlier acts of grandiosity (the waters are really going to stop rising because Barack Obama won the Democratic Presidential nomination?) with an act that reveals just how much the Obama campaign resembles a cult of personality. What are we going to have next? A revival of Richard Nixon's idea to make White House guards look like Beefeaters and 19th Century Prussians?

Via e-mail, RedState colleague Dan McLaughlin suggests that perhaps Obama will now move to commission a campaign version of "Hail to the Chief" that can be used at events until the election, after which, Barack Obama can presumably prepare himself to hear the real thing. Of course, I'm not sure that a new interim tune needs to be written--at least not while this song exists:

Or is this little ditty not exultant and obsequious enough?

Relatedly, John McCormack notes that technically, the Davids Axelrod and Plouffe may be risking a stiff fine or a prison sentence. Of course, this will never happen but I can easily find that the Obama campaign has "reproduce[d]" a "likeness of the seals of the President or Vice President, or any substantial part thereof" for a purpose not pertaining to "the official use of the Government of the United States."

Maybe Axelrod and Plouffe want to approach their candidate and ask him--ever so offhandedly, of course--whether his legal skills are rusty. Just in case.

Whoa! I stood right up!!!

This guy really scares me to death. I am serious he is Hitler incarnation. It pains me to see all those Jews are still voting for him. It will be too late when they realize the dire consequences.

I'm afraid the day Obama(Hitler) Youth will become mandatory in high schools is coming soon.

Some posters may accuse me of being hyperbolic, and many of you would believe Obama is a 'feeble' candidate with no political will. But remember this, he has incredibly passionate and shall I see, irrational base: the AA voting bloc and the youth. It won't surprise me one bit Obama will use them to riot in the street while dealing with crisis at home after he grabs the power.

Be afraid, and very afrid. Just some reminder:
Because I am the one they and I have been waiting for...and I am lovin' it.

I had to go to wikipedia to get some of those names (believe it or not, I didn't have them on the tip of my tongue) and I mixed up my umlauted ones with my unumlauted ones.

Stupid non-English alphabets.

On his Fight the Smears website, I noticed that the eagle at the top had an Obama shield, and looked awfully similar to the eagle on the official seal. I simply laughed it off, not knowing that they would take it one ten steps further and great a Great Seal of Barack Obama.

This clownshoe actually has me worried. The supporters believe he's the Messiah, and since he won the nomination, it's about crystal clear that he believes it too. He claims immunity from anyone saying anything about him, but he can go out and say that we'll object to him on the grounds that he's black.

And the fact this joker actually has a chance to be our President has me worried for the safety of our country.

In politics, you have your word and your friends; go back on either and you're dead. (Rule #11 of the public policy process)

Pure fascism. To take the seal of the Office of the President of the United States, an office bigger than any human being walking this earth unless you're the messiah (enough said there), and turn it into your personal logo, to Obamaize it is fascist by nature. It's not and never has been about him having the honor to humbly serve an office so many great men have served before but rather the office being blessed with his presence. That's the arrogance and totalitarian nature that surrounds this campaign for starters. So over the top one doesn't even know where to begin.

What next, every school and business hanging is picture and logo front and center? This is fascist Third World bunk and not the actions of a great constitutional republic. It's beyond disgusting and disgraceful. It's the Office of the President of the United States for crying out loud!!!! It's bigger than this unaccomplished punk running for president can ever imagine being. What next, replace the stars on Old Glory with the Obama logo? Obama nation? Just give him a crayon and the original U.S. Constitution so he can edit at will.

Get your grubby paws off the seal!!!!!

If you don't know what fascism means, you'd do us all a great favor by not accusing other people of being fascist.

Obama's seal is a lot of things (silly, pretentious, presumptious, naive, a further reflection of the bizarre Obama cult of personality, and more) but it's not fascist.

Not so much because of the tie to Naziism itself, but because it reminded me of the usurpation of a symbol.

And I'm inclined to think that calling Obama a fascist or Nazi is both a misapplication and damaging to those opposing his election.

And as a religious symbol, the swastika predates Christianity in most of the world. Hitler's usage probably has less to do with Christian symbolism and more to do with his Aryan obsession, if what I read on Wikipedia is correct.

And I agree generally. Fascism is the nationalistic version of socialism, and clearly, Obama is a universalist Marxist.

Plus he is ignorant, stupid, and given this SNL like adaptation in a serious to him way, he is quite the naive child.

He is Michelle's baby.

of the flag. Still, the "halo" around that symbol includes a popular (mis)conception that it was based off of the symbol of the cross.

The free exchange of ideas inevitably yields both heat and light.

The Office of the President of the United States is never, never, never about one man. This guy is so far beyond unfit for the office words fail. Anyone who doesn't automatically see this kind of vandalism to the seal to the office of the president as an automatic disqualifying act is not a patriot, period.

Sorry for the thread jack but I went from denial on this one, no way something so despicable can be true, to anger. But I will never accept it.

is the spread of a personality cult. It is disturbing because the manifestations have certain parallels with very dark episodes in history.

I guess what concerns me most is that Obama sees no problem with this kind of c-rap. Not sure if he is dense, has a messiah complex or is just dumb. What is crystal clear is he will pursue the office of the presidency by whatever means he is able, and his followers are too star-struck to care or even understand it.

The free exchange of ideas inevitably yields both heat and light.

I think you still have some wishful thought on this guy. You're still praying maybe, just maybe he's not as scary as I thought.

I, however, have no doubt this guy knows exactly what he's doing. America will soon have their own version of Hitler/Karl Marx/Lennin/Stalin.

want to about what I think. Generally I tend to say what I mean and mean what I say. We'll just have to disagree on that point.

The free exchange of ideas inevitably yields both heat and light.

man is. We're not stupid nor blind, and you should also realize that most of us understand the historical example of Hitler and remember it. Unlike pre-WWII Germany, we are not a defeated people yearning for someone to help us rise up again. Opossum's true believers may count themselves in that category, but they are not a majority, you know. And from what I am seeing in polls, fundraising, and anecdotal evidence, the tide is turning for the Opossum. And not in a good way. Yes, it's early days yet and anything can happen, but what is happening now is not a good indicator for his success in November.

Take a break from panic mode and go outside for a while.

I took it as a pretty good approximation of the true believer quotient that 29% of those polled want to nationalize the oil companies.

My guess is that 29% are the size of the core who think America has it out for them. The other 71% think they have a fair shake at pursuing happiness in spite of, not because of, the government.

RedNeck Hippie,

I agree with you; what scares me most is if you go to Obama's site you will see his obvious solicitations to children... Children can't vote. Why is there a section specifically designed to indoctrinate children? Hey why not, the Obama camp already has teens wishing they can vote for him because they think he is "cool". The highest office in the land, and we are promoting it to minors... great strategy..

Guess it goes with the territory of religious instruction.

The free exchange of ideas inevitably yields both heat and light.

And two known posts were made by RedState members before the Weekly Standard put up their questioning page, and you ignored your own site's scoops. Too bad.

I thought you were suggesting that somehow the Weekly Standard had debunked some aspect...never mind.

"No compromise with the main purpose, no peace till victory, no pact with unrepentant wrong." - Winston Churchill

Does this mean an oath to the office of the President of the United States during an Obama administration is not an oath to the office itself but to Obama himself, to the Messiah?

Or that the office and the man are now one in the same and during an Obama administration it is not possible to respect the office but not the man?

I think it has the right combination of faux menace and wannabe-ism.

During the Democratic primaries Obama inadvertently revealed his contempt towards those of us who are embittered small town gun-toting bible thumpers. In a conciliatory gesture designed to placate such hillbillies, the senator has graciously adorned his new presidential logo with the words "“Vero Possumus”. Those familiar with classic sitcoms will remember that Vero Possumus is what Jethro and Ellie Mae ate for supper, the delicious vittles so skillfully prepared by Granny in the roasting pit she dug alongside the cement pond.

Yet despite graciously extending the hand of friendship, poor Barry is once again being ridiculed just because he is an insufferably pompous and narcissistic elitist who appeals only to dilettantes. It just isn't fair.

The free exchange of ideas inevitably yields both heat and light.

Google “McCain Songbird” It might explain why he refuses to release his military records.
Jack McLamb is a highly respected name in law enforcement circles. After 9 years of clandestine operations in Cambodia and unmentionable areas, he returned home to Phoenix where he became one of the most decorated police officers on record. Twice McLamb was named Officer of the Year. He went on to become an FBI hostage negotiator. This man has stated that every one of the many former POWs he has talked with consider McCain a traitor. States McLamb, “He was never tortured…The Vietnamese Communists called him the Songbird, that’s his code name, Songbird McCain, because he just came into the camp singing and telling them everything they wanted to know.” McLamb further quotes former POWs as saying McCain starred in 32 propaganda videos in which he denounced his country and comrades.

In that movie "My Fellow Americans"?
I think Obama saw that movie too...

"Always be honest with yourself. Even if you are honest with no one else."

Although vero possumus is probably as close as you can get to "Yes, we can" in Latin, it's actually only a rough translation, because Latin has no words for "yes" or "no," and the verb posse can mean things other than "can," especially isolated from any auxiliary verb.

If you were to see those words in an actual Latin text, then the most natural translation would probably be, "Truly, we are powerful." Which, come to think of it, does have a Caesarish ring to it.

I would just like to point out that unlike the silly attacks the notion that Obama was breaking the law garnered, it appears the McCain Campaign agrees.

Yes, He Did.

And it is necessary for the White House to enforce that law.

New York Times October 24, 2005:

"...Trent Duffy, a White House spokesman, said that 'you can't pick and choose where you want to enforce the rules surrounding the use of official government insignia, whether it's for humor or fraud.'"

So as "Grant M. Dixton, associate counsel to the president, wrote to The Onion on Sept. 28": when does the Barack Obama receive his notice of cease and desist?

"Mr. Dixton wrote that the seal 'is not to be used in connection with commercial ventures or products in any way that suggests presidential support or endorsement.'

They couldn't even complete the action in the motto; even a first-semester Latin student understands "possum" requires a complementary infinitive to be grammatically correct.

This is a great metaphor for Obama's whole campaign -- a childish "True we are able to...." what?

Heh.
