Love, Clinton style?

Ciao, bella!

Former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi appears to be in some hot water with his wife. We know this because Mr. Berlusconi (70) made a public apology to his wife Veronica (50) on the front page of La Repubblica for inappropriate remarks that he made to some female guests at an awards ceremony last week. Mr. Berlusconi lived up to his reputation as an inveterate womanizer, declaring that he was prepared to marry one young lady, or to "go anywhere" with another.

Mrs. Berlusconi demanded a personal apology, and apparently did not get it. So she demanded a public apology, and got it from the husband who hopes for another go at being the prime minister of Italy.

Like the Italian press, I have been riveted by this sordid personal drama being played out in the public eye. And I have to wonder if is this what we could expect from another season of "The Clinton White House?" I mean, how likely is it that "first spouse" Mr. Clinton will make inappropriate remarks to young female guests at a boring official function? And how likely is it that Mrs. Clinton will force him to apologize on the front page of the New York Times--and that the Times will print it? After all, can't we all remember the excitement of the "vast right wing conspiracy" interview on the Today Show? Is there any reason to think the New York Times wouldn't become an agent of this chapter in the First Family's domestic drama if needs be?

Somehow, I don't see the Clintons letting the Berlusconis steal their march on this one.

That would be quite the move: she shows how strong she is - that she can deal with the eeeeeevil men - and he can show just how sensitive he is, and that he really, truly "feels her pain."

Yes, I can see it. And the left would eat it up.
