My Indirect Nazi Past Prevents Me From Defending The Racist Fred Thompson . . . or something like that.

I think we have a candidate today for dumbest "serious news story" ever. In fact, you might want to email Tina Daunt and ask if she was serious. Or, better yet, you might want to email the Reader Representative at the Los Angeles Times and ask if this is really the level of journalism they have descended to.

Because while you would expect rabid lefties that no one takes seriously to make an issue of this, you would, I expect, be perturbed to realize a respectable mainstream national newspaper would let one of its journalists spend 1,053 words making the case that Fred Thompson cannot be President because he played a racist for three episodes on "Wise Guy" back in the 80's.

So can "Law & Order" actor and former Sen. Fred Thompson (R-Tenn.) become the first presidential candidate with this credit? Thompson played a white supremacist, spewing anti-Semitic comments and fondling an autographed copy of "Mein Kampf" on a television drama 19 years ago.

Now, I would defend Fred Thompson from this, but I was once a criminal defense attorney. Being a criminal defense attorney of several people found guilty of their crimes puts me in the same league as Maximilian Schell, a Hollywood actor who played Hans Rolfe, criminal defense attorney to the Nazis at Nuremberg in Judgment at Nuremberg. As a result of my past indirectly assisting Nazis through Hans Rolfe as played by Maximilian Schell, I am disqualified from defending Thompson.

I will have to leave it to Patterico's Pontifications.

In "Knute Rockne, All-American," Reagan played George Gipp, who died in the film. No questions were raised about whether Reagan was actually dead.

In the "Terminator" films, Arnold Schwarzenegger played a cyborg from the future. No questions were raised about whether Arnold is a cyborg or whether he came here from the future.

Now, if we want to start in on Stuart Smalley...

Socialism doesn't work. It looks nice on paper, but it's been tried and it's failed miserably every time (usually accompanied by widespread death and suffering).

church goer who consorted with clergymen. Nobody took that seriously, and he knew how to enjoy Easter Sunday after church.

In Thompson's case I would say the director and scriptwriter shouldn't run for President.

Tina Daunt should run for the hospital.

George Clooney should play the doctor who ends her misery.

but I'm sure not gonna watch him on Lawn Order anymore. I never liked those darn gardening shows much anyway.

When Sean Penn or Tim Robbins or Susan Sarandon endorses Hillary or Obama, should we then pick whatever was their nastiest role and say that that candidate has the backing of murderers or drug addicts or whatever it is the role was?

that couldn't be used against a candidate?

I see his name on the credits and the movie gets 2.5 strikes against it. He even managed to make a Michael Fox movie bad once; and despite Fox's liberal politics, he usually made watchable movies.

Unfortunately, this stuff works. Painting Thompson with an "act" and confusing it with the man is highly efficacious. You only need to look at Det. Mark Furman and the Simpson Trial where the "racist" comments was Furman verbalizing a "bad cop" play acting role to provide dialog for a book someone was writing. Those book quotes of the "role" he played were used to discredit him at trial and most bought it.

It is unfortunate that so many will buy into this kind of lie, not only those of the left, who embrace it willingly, but many of the uninformed who embrace it out of simple ignorance.

You have to be kidding me! How can anyone hold it against anyone who has played a role as an actor. Why would that disqualify him to be President.

How silly can you get. That does not mean he feels that way just because he played a role.

the Los Angeles Times

...

a respectable mainstream national newspaper

If there's a less respectable national paper out there, I don't know what it is. Even the Weekly World News has more credibility. Judging from their horrendous circulation declines the past several years, it isn't all that mainstream any more either.

Boston Glob, the Mpls Star Trib, the SF Chron, the Atlanta JC, the always prevalent NYT, the Chi Trib...

I could spend the day at this not finish the list.

The LA Times makes the NYT look like with Washington Post and the Washington Post look like the WSJ. The other ones are certainly about as bad, but I wouldn't consider national papers... of course, maybe the LA Times isn't one any more either.

The Democrats are out to destroy whoever gets the Republican nomination. There theory is that if Republicans can "swift Boat" John Kerry, than the Democrats can do the same thing to Republicans. The thing to understand is that some of the Democrats are saying that it makes no difference whether the attack is true or not. It only has to be believable. Here's an example of what I am talking about:
We can use Fred Thompson's portrayal of white supremacist to destroy his POTUS dreams

What this shows is that we may be in for a bumpy ride if the Democrats actually carry through on this kind of strategy.
