...that YES! YES! IT'S A PLOT! A PLOT AGAINST YOUR CANDIDATE!!!!!

A quite nefarious one, in fact, and never mind what Ace said:

Obama passport files violated; 2 State Department workers fired
By Bill Gertz
March 20, 2008

Two State Department employees were fired recently and a third disciplined for improperly accessing electronic personal data on Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama, Bush administration officials said yesterday.

The officials, all contract workers, used their authorized computer network access to look up files within the department's consular affairs section, which processes and stores passport information, and read Mr. Obama's passport application and other records, in violation of department privacy rules, State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice was notified of the security breach yesterday, and responded by saying security measures used to monitor records of high-profile Americans worked properly in detecting the breaches.

Mr. McCormack said the officials did not appear to be seeking information on behalf of any political candidate or party.

It's just not our plot.

Read on.

Let us dispense with the suggestion that this is due to the GOP in two words:

State. Department.

Yes, pretty much torpedoes that one right below the waterline, doesn't it? Trust me, our only evil, evvvvillll conspiracy involving State involves eliminating it entirely and breaking out its functions among Commerce, Defense, and the National Endowment of the Arts (we figure giving 10% of State's budget to the latter will be enough of a bribe to placate the Democrats). Those guys wouldn't urinate on us if we were on fire...

But I digress.

Anyway, ain't us, and it ain't Hillary - the way Obama's been cratering lately, she doesn't have much of a need - so who was it? Why, isn't it obvious? Al Gore. Obama's delegates: he wants them, he does. And he's lurking in the shadows RIGHT NOW setting in motion his plan to take them away from Barack Obama.

Sure, laugh now. But when you and Barry are lying there bleeding in the street, while Al Gore is leading away your precious delegates to his glorious and epic defeat at the hands of John McCain - well. You'll be laughing out of the other side of your mouth then, let me tell you. And you'll wish that you had listened to me...

Moe Lane

PS: No, I don't know how passport information would be so critically useful to Al Gore's plan. Then again, I really can't think of why it'd be so critically useful to any of the actual campaigns, either - and the nice thing about Al Gore is that "He's just barking mad these days" is a perfectly good explanation for anything he does.

Step 1. Give Obama's passport to manbearpig.
Step 2.
Step 3. Huge Delegate Count!

It's so good I almost wish we had done it. I mean, I'm sort of jealous of the State Department that they stooped to this level, because frankly I would have loved to have done it myself, but never would. Leave it to them to really sweat their muscles to make things righteous. Whoooooeeeeeeee.

What really should infuriate Americans is that anyone in the State Department still plays these kinds of games with anyone in the country, particularly a Presidential candidate. I mean, I know they haven't been in the news recently and that's got to hurt their pride, but this is really just going a little too far for the sake of publicity.

The problem is that you can't fire these people, and because of that they're going to continue to be the loose cannons of the Western Hemisphere. Personally I'd have them all keelhauled under Armitage's yacht. Frog marching is much too good for these people, we should have made them walk the plank.

TIME, esp under Bill Clinton, but all the time under all Presidents, and always will, and that we are lucky this time it was caught.

To imagine otherwise would be to indulge in liberal utopianism.

Actually, in this case they did. Of course they were contractors, not actual direct government employees. Well, Two out of Three at least, and as Meatloaf said, "Two out of Three ain't bad."

I wonder if it ever occurs to the Kool-Aid drinkers that part of the reason government (and businesses) are using more contract workers is that if these had been regular employees, reprimanding even one of them would have been nigh impossible.

Okay, okay, I don't really wonder much about it -- they obviously don't.

that the government so quickly identified a breach in security - especially in the State Department. It could only happen if it involved protecting one of their own fellow travelers.

Hillary, or Hillary appointees foisted on Bill in exchange for silence, who have been promised West Wing jobs after Hillary's Inauguration.

Nobody they can drag into court that way.

Clinton....that place is loaded up with liberals and Clintonites....but Obama blames the "Administration"...the silliness of that charge is so funny and really not helping him make that leap of wanting to represent "all" the people...I am curious does this man realize that 40+ percent of us are to the right of Independent...I think not.

doing this to change the news cycle. The foreign service is probably litered with folks that like his dovishness.

I'm not sure how far this goes, but Gertz's piece doesn't indicate a vast conspiracy. However, if there was one, it's a Clinton operation. The Department is stuffed to the gills with Democrats waiting on a Clinton Restoration. Passport Control is handled by Contractors, apparently.

Easy to penetrate, though.

They've been flogging this non-story all night, complete with a "breaking news" graphic on the screen. Keith Olbermann even did a "special second edition" of his show to harp on this thing, bringing in Obama's co-chair to discuss. He kept saying things like, "now, I don't want to sound alarmist, but...."

I seriously think the FEC should look into whether or not MSNBC is making daily in-kind campaign contributions to Obama.

Is this what they will stoop to in order to get Obama's America-hating preacher off the news?

It's been a bad month for Dems.

Enjoy!!!

so it's hardly likely Obama people are trying to change the subject. They are certainly playing it up, but that's understandable.

These are contract employees who have already been fired. I think the Consular section hired a bunch of contract people to meet the requirements of Americans now needing passports to go to Canada. There was a backlog because of that which the regular employees couldn't handle. So, they outsourced passport apps to some firm. More signs that Condi Rice is not really doing a great job there.

This has clinton written all over it. circumstantial..the article by Joe Conason in Dec calling on Obama to release his passport records, the criticism of Obama for not holding any hearings on the subcommittee (European affairs) he chairs which has control over NATO and hence Afghanistan. Clintons trying to prove he hasn't traveled to Europe since being a senator or if he did not for this committee hence not ready to answer the red phone at 3 AM.

Travel office, missing files, FBI files, Sandy burglar...a classic Clinton black bag operation.

...had actually surfaced in the campaign as a real issue. Huh.

Anyway: Joe Conason, in December? Got the link, or at least the magazine name, so I can correct my shocking ignorance? :)

The Fuzzy Puppy of the VRWC. I've been usurped!

All things considered, either you are right and it's a Clinton maneuver that might backfire on Hillary (by taking the spotlight off of Rev. Wright), or it's an Obama maneuver, planned in December or January to create sympathy for him. It doesn't have to be a counter-measure to Reverend-Gate to still be part of the VWODC (vast wacked-out Democrat conspiracy). Obama's people were out with an accusation against the Bush Administration very quickly, weren't they?

Or, if thy name be Occam, it's just a coincidence. But when the Clintons are involved, is there such a thing as "coincidence?"

in which he seemed to fault the administration at large immediately without even looking at the middle-manager level of bureaucracy. I thought that was a little unfair because that would be like blaming Bill Clinton personally for the mess that the Department of Energy had turned into that year, which I think was 1999-2000, when we had a Chinese spy scandal, a farcical prosecution of Wen Ho Lee that ended in exoneration and fires from the equally mismanaged federal lands that swept through the Los Alamos facility and left many questions unanswered about the blue and green flames coming from certain buildings. I don't think most thinking people can be bum-rushed into blaming Bush first and foremost for a few contractors working at Foggy Bottom.

lesterblog.blogspot.com

I was so upset when I read this line from that same article:

The Obama campaign denounced the accessing as "an outrageous breach of security and privacy, even from an Administration that has shown little regard for either over the last eight years."

I'm -pretty- sure that these contract workers have nothing to do with the Bush Administration, and this was one of Obama's failed attempts to sound appealing and charismatic.

Courage becomes a living and an attractive virtue when it is regarded not only as a willingness to die manfully, but also as a determination to live decently.

in order to garner some sympathy. Does he think that he'll win because enough people will feel sorry & vote for him???

Now it is reported that Clinton's and McCain's files were accessed too. A nice coverup?

files? And was that raid the source of his and Hillary's power via blackmail?

Now that's a good question!

"An unarmed man can only flee from evil, and evil is not overcome by fleeing from it.“--Jeff Cooper. From Bill Coffey's collection of military quotations

what if these contract employees were just bored one day and said, "Hey, I wonder if I can look at Obama's file here? Oo, Neat! Cool, I can see Hillary's too. Hey, look, here's Senator McCain's too! What a fun job I have!"

Not that that justifies the behavior, since it is forbidden by policy. But is it really not a possibility?

Just wondering if all the conspiracy hype is really needed.

I am sorry that I offended.

My entire post, in this thread at least, was meant as a light aside to a seemingly overblown bit of news of yet another example of bloated government messiness.

Especially the "nut job" comment. It was directed across the aisle at the left, conceiver of the VRWC concept, not at the true VRWC.

I'm not very good at apologies that don't actually admit wrongdoing. Guess I'll never last in politics.
