Its very early but he is my pick...I know of not other names that would join the race that are as honest, blatant and pulls not punches, he calls people out by name. He is going to make a great prez. Does anybody have any idea who is veep will be? Romney or Rudy? I dont think MCcain has a chance.

I think he'd have to go with a young person to help offset his age. I think Romney would probably not be a bad pick, although I'm not sure his style matches well with Fred's. My personal preference would be Mark Sanford (Gov, SC) but I think some people view two southern conservatives on a ticket as a bad thing (I think it would be great). Conventional wisdom would have him pick someone from Ohio or Florida who is very popular in their home state. Rudy is a great guy and his style matches up well with Fred's, but putting him on the ticket would make social conservatives leery and certainly wouldn't pick up any electoral votes from New York.

The way I look at a VP is different from those who would pick someone from FL or OH just to help pick up those states. I think someone like Sanford, who is very conservative, young, and well-spoken, would be out there as a champion for the same limited government ideals that Thompson is going to be campaigning on and would help pick up many more votes than just one state, IMO. Sanford is a very bright star for the conservative movement and is going to be President some day, I just hope the nominee in '08 will be smart enought to pick him as their running mate this year.

Some of my friends are still using if when referring to an F. Thompson candidacy. I noticed his response to the other candidate question, "... if he beats me." at about 12:30 into the tape. Sounds like McCain has an opponent, no if's about it!

Well, I better go, gotta get my yard signs up and properly affix my Thompson 2008 bumper stickers; then there is all of the baking for the hosting an information meeting. Busy Busy

I honestly did not know he had an 8 month old child!

GO FRED!!!!

I seriously do not know what the big hoopla is about fred thompson. He seems to me to be a right of center version of john edwards honestly. If anyone can tell me what it is please do but my opinion is that he is a refuge for people unhappy with mccain.

Fred would:

1. Appoint strict constructionist justices ala Scalia...
2. Roe v. Wade is bad law, return it to the states.
3. Victory in Iraq is essential not just for the immediate ramifications, but for how America is viewed by her friends and enemies regarding commitments and challenges down the road.
4. Lower taxes are always better... it spurs economic growth!
5. Are you listening to the ideas the man is espousing?

with due respect,

By right of center Edwards i mean someone only the hard core partisans get excited for. I was making no reference to the hair, the insane amounts of money, or the stupidity. Part of that question is coming from seeing him on leno yesterday and hearing part of the crowd go crazy every time he answered a question. Ok maybe i should have said right of center obama then.

That might be a better analogy perhaps if only Obama were as experienced as Fred.

Thompson does have more than just support from hard core partisans though. And Edwards/Obama are by no means the candidacies of hard core partisans necessarily.

I am talking about principled positions based on directions that have the good of this country in mind. Not hardcore partisanship. I am no Republican through and through. I was a conservative for 22 years as an Independent. I became a Republican in 2002. I am simply referring to the philosophy and ideas that appear to under gird his positions. Well thought out comes to mind. Something quite different when I think of Breck Edwards or Rama-Obama-Dama.

I am not in the Fred camp... but this interview draws me a little closer... no rush to decide. By the way, the other guy I like is Guillani. He is hardly a Republican hardcore partisan guy. I am interested in someone who is clear thinking and getting, at least, some of the important things right.

I want you to note his answers to questions regarding Supreme Court Justices -- Roberts, Scalia, Thomas, Alito -- on Roe v. Wade -- "fabricated out of whole clothe... bad law, bad medecine" -- listen to him citing Milton Friedman and Calvin Coolidge. More important, observe his sincerity, his ease, and his seeming unflappability.

Are you old enough to remember Governor Reagan on the campaign trail? The President. If so, compare your reaction to Fred Thompson to the one you had to Reagan. It should be similar, if you are a conservative.

Listen to him say that he is running because there are certain things he thinks he can do which only a President can do. Listen to him saying, near to directly, that he is the man who can keep Hillary Clinton out of the White House.

I'm not supporting Fred over the others right now, but I can explain what I am seeing, what others see.

This is important stuff.

I think you hit the nail on the head actually. Thompson's honesty + his unabashed conservatism - his willingness to say things that indicate he really is one at heart - are the two factors that have won me over.

He just sounds to me like all the other candidates that are articulate, in my book thats Guiliani Huckabee and Romney. I just dont see why people are rocking the fred thompson t shirts and all when he hasnt even announced yet. Maybe the edwards comment was over the mark i should have said obama my bad.

about which lefties should be excited. He's a mealy-mouthed liar who would nationalize and bankrupt the economy.

FDT is the opposite, ergo, the excitement amongst conservatives.

But the comparison is invalid. I'll repeat the Reagan comparison and note that I'm not calling him another Reagan or anything of the sort. I'm talking about the candidate, his air, and the dynamic.

Issue after issue, he articulates with an almost offhand sincerity the likes of which I don't see elsewhere.

To become a FredHead for a while now. And I still have all the same positive thoughts about Fred. But with a little time to think, I find myself hoping that he really can shine in certain formats like all the Fred-Hype and my intuition say he will.

Those formats being: Debating Republicans. Debating Democrats. Responding to opposition's dirt/research. Being pressed in interviews. And really communicating with the national audience and making them feel the same way my intuition (Fredtuition) tells me to, after lots of Law and Order viewing, and a little bit of reading.

After watching the interview, I continue to be encouraged. As I am every time I see some of Fred in action. I look forward to the debate format though.

And I REALLLLY look forward to Fred versus Hillary in debate. Of course it may not wind up that way, and it could be various other combinations of nominees- all of which sound exciting- but as for Fred vs. Hillary- all he has to do is stand there next to her and the country gets red. That is my hope, anyway.

Good post Erick.

This was a very solid interview, and it touched a lot of core issues that many conservatives want to hear Fred's take on. The more I hear, the more I like -- but there is no such thing as too much information, so I will look forward to hearing more about what Fred will do as president.

The presidential race seems to be getting a lot more interesting.

I also love Fred as a candidate...and that is not because of interviews etc., He just simply comes across as honest and trustworthy. What a change! Maybe it's just because he is not 'yet' a complete politician (thank goodness), but what the hey, I'm ready to give him a chance. He's conservative, and he seems to have both honesty and integrity...that's enough for me (hope that it is so). Hope he doesn't disappoint.

Now, don't pay any attention to the MSM who are about to explode with every negative item of interest (to them and the left, after all, he will be leading soon...). They will do their best to destroy his running...

The man knows how to grab your attention and connect. Very few have that rare quality. Reaganesque, almost!

This is really a quality interview. If this were seen by every conservative in the country, Thompson would walk away with the nomination.

Good interview. What struck me most was that his responses did not seem to be scripted, sound bite responses. They sunded like the comments of a man who knows what he is talking about, someone who has spent time thinking about Why' he believes what he does.

I'll be honest, I've come across very few folks in life who can answer questions about their beliefs from a 'Why' perspective. Most are tumbleweeds with the prevailing winds.

Fred is an actor and he surely has prepared himself to answer these questions, so perhaps it is all presentation. If so, it was still impressive.

That is the voice of a man who knows himself and has thought deeply about the issues. Just as Reagan was attacked for being an "actor," so will be Thompson, but only now are we seeing the depth of Reagan's thinking. Thompson is the master of himself and his subject matter. I'm getting a good feeling about this!

I just love Arthur Branch! Jack McCoy have a place in his Cabinet?

Fred's great! A Great Actor! John McCain is the Real Deal.
