I know we all have our different choices when it comes to the nomination, but Senator Thompson has exactly what I've been looking for - The ability to say it like it is and pull no punches.
One thing I like about Rudy's campaign has been his willingness to focus most of his fire on the Democrats. Fred seems to be warming to that as well, unlike some people in the field who seem to think that other Republicans are the problem.
"No compromise with the main purpose, no peace till victory, no pact with unrepentant wrong." - Winston Churchill
I want to vote for the candidate that pummels the Democrats the best, not the one who pummels fellow Republicans the best.
yesterday; guess I'm now officially a FredHead.

The more Fred rips the Dems the more I'll be giving. That clip is hot!!

If I had a nickel for every ditto I felt like saying in reply to these comments on this post, well I would have a lot of nickels.
Give me more to make me FEEL the need to give, Fred!

See Will and Novak today for details. But I agree that somebody with personality who can and will call BS when he sees it is refreshing.

We would also like to know your advice for somebody like my daughter, who's going to graduate in two years, advice that you would give a young person.

- will and novak are clueless
I agree that Novak is increasingly little more than a mouthpiece for conventional wisdom. Most days he sounds like he just polled three guys at the NYT, two guys at the WaPo, and Wolf Blitzer. And then wrote up whatever they said.
His column today may not be like that. Just sayin'.
Drink Good Coffee. You can sleep when you're dead.
From Novak's column - "An example of who was excluded is Scott Reed, who ran Bob Dole's 1996 campaign and is regarded as one of Washington's keener political minds."
I can't imagine why anyone would turn down help from someone who was a part of the wildly successful Bob Dole campaign.
Perhaps you double-clicked the post comment button.

sort of like turning down Bob Schrum's help. I thought Will's column disappointing but Novak's was like disgruntled job seekers central.

two guys to think for you. Too bad you didn't choose better. Why would you give any credence to their opinions?
Envisioning when all that is Left is the Right.
Why would you NOT give any credence to their opinions? Are old conservative just too far to the right for you? What's up with that?
They have too often proven themselves tone deaf as regards the base and novak has gotten lazy of late. That said, they are often brilliant and are two of the the greatest conservatives ever. On this they are trapped in the beltway view if what matters, ie process.
Americans care about substance and its too bad that the wills and novaks don't write more about the wicked substance of the dems.

They may have lost their connection with "the base", but quite frankly, I think a lot of Republicans have recently. I think of myself as a part of the base, and I've never felt more out of touch with my party and its candidates.
The Novak piece, frankly, wasn't a very substantive piece, and really isn't worth commenting on, even though I'm a much greater fan of Novak than Will.
Will's piece, however, really hit home with me. As much as I've been wishing for the conservative knight on a white horse to unify us, I'm not yet sold on Fred Thompson. All of Will's harsh words are what I keep thinking deep down inside. I wouldn't say most of it out loud, but I have to believe that he and I aren't the only ones with these misgivings.
On this, maybe it isn't HE that is out of touch with the base.

I've never been a particular follower of either man. For Will, at least, he has been decent in some areas, but its hard for me to take seriously as a conservative a man who is (or at least, was) in favor of banning handguns.
I have enough respect for him to consider what he has to say, but he ain't that far to the right.
That hardly makes their opinions any more valid than the drunks's in the gutter. Take your pick, but the drunk probably has a lot more insight than these two ninnies.

Will proved he can't be trusted in commenting on the primaries. He did so early in the article when he took a quote out of context to make it appear Fred wasn't familiar with the positions of the other candidates, when the rest of his answer made it clear that he did, but wanted to focus on his own message and the Democrats instead of the other candidates.
What Fred actually said:
"Well, to tell you the truth, I haven't spent a whole lot of time going into the details of their positions. I will be doing — I mean, publicly. I obviously know where they stand and what they have done and what they've written.

What Will said:
Thompson replied: "Well, to tell you the truth, I haven't spent a whole lot of time going into the details of their positions."
"He also is unfamiliar with the details of his own positions."

He also characterized his Ingraham answer about McCain-Feingold as "rambling and incoherent", but I found it to be neither when listening to it.
Apparently George Will is taking dishonesty lessons from the likes of Maureen Dowd now.

John Paul Jones (letter to M. Le Ray de Chaumont,16 Nov.1778)
When he said that "most of the Democrats in Congress will not disavow it [the MoveOn ad]", the truth is that to my knowledge, not a single Democrat in Congress or even with national prominence outside of Congress will disavow it. Liebermann does not count as a Dem, by the way.

and I mean that sincerely. Whew, good thing I included that "to the best of my knowledge" disclaimer...
So, are there any other disavowers? One single nationally prominent Democrat? That's it?

... in life when speaking clearly and unequically is far more important than depth of thought and nuance. Fred is running for the job where this may be more true than any other. The clarity of America's position, to both citizen and foreigner alike, can often be worth more than clever diplomacy or even military force.

I saw this man in person today at The Villages and this was but a small portion of the things he said. The crowd was expected to be about 500 but wound up being well over 2000,not bad for a day that when I went by the local bank a half hour later the temperature read 106 ouch hot.
A very impressive man and he is saying 95% the right things.
My thought is that as Fred gets more stump experience, his performance will improve markedly. People that have been panning him out of the gate have been expecting him to perform as those that have been campaigning for months/years. While there is some merit to this position--after all, when the public forms its collective impressions of the candidates, there won't be any performance pro-rating going on--that argument doesn't hold water this far out from the first primaries.

After having the media ram Hillary down my throat for the past year (15 years?), I have this lingering fantasy of Fred debating Hillary and getting her to do the "shrill" for all of America to see. (Think, Tom finally getting Jack to loose it in "A Few Good Men".)
OK, I have not yet fully decided on Fred yet but, nevertheless, this scenario still makes me smile.
base. I had genuine fears and reasons to believe that this base would not be excited this election, and this election is one in which conservatives have to be passionate about the candidate if we want the White House. The same was so of 1996, btw, and we saw what happened then. The same was true in 1980, albeit for some different reasons.
.....trashing the New York Times and Moveon.org and all of a sudden he's the guy the will unite the base.
The same thing was basically said by all the top tier candidates, so I don't see what was so "breathtaking" here. Granted, I agree with what he said, and it is some nice conservative red meat, but that is why basically the same thing was repeated by all the GOP candidates and many elected officials too.
It's not called F-redstate.com for nothin'!
“.....women and minorities hardest hit”
Fred said something.
Every other candidate said something.
Fred excited the base, as reflected at RedState.com.
Every other candidate... silence, thus non-excitement.
I think you're on to something, my man!
Think about it.
Attaboy Fred! Its about time someone call MoveOn & the democrats on the carpet for their shameful actions!
Fred proves once again why people were waiting for him to get in the race.
He BEATS ON DEMOCRATS...Frequently and HARD!
It's now up to the other Republicans to follow suit and pound away.
By the way, McCain got in some good licks on HillDog today!

Can one of you serious students or campaigners explain to me why our candidates don't exude more confidence, more of the time (aimed at the real opposition, I mean)?
I just want to know what calculations are used. (Probably the same type of analysis and strategy that resulted in W's New Tone)

I'm starting to experience a new sensation. I'm having trouble deciding on a candidate for good reasons.

I agree with everything he said, but he's really lacking in his delivery style. His movements, especially his arms, are really rigid and make him look uncomfortable. His "anger" tone is noticeable contrived and he turned his back to the camera (assuming he knew it was there). It's defiantly arguable if this is better than Romney's over polished style, but I really (really) don't see the "Great Communicator" in him. This is about the fifth time I've watched him speak and I'm convinced that someone has drastically oversold his communication ability.
