Tancredo Bails

The Associated Press reports Republican Colorado Congressman Tom Tancredo, plans to announce he is abandoning his presidential campaign:
The five-term Colorado congressman planned to make the announcement at a news conference in Des Moines, Iowa, on Thursday, the person said, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak for Tancredo or his campaign.
Tancredo's campaign would only say he planned a "major announcement" Thursday.
Tancredo announced in October that he would not seek a sixth term in Congress, but he may run for the Senate next year when Republican Wayne Allard retires.

Rep. Tancredo has made it very clear that he will not be seeking Sen. Allard's seat. He may, though, choose to seek the GOP nomination in 2010 for a race against Sen. Salazar.

I don't really know much about "the bench" in Colorado, but I don't think Tancredo in the race against Salazar would be terrible. I mean he should be sure not to sound like he's attacking Hispanics in such a race - but unless there's somebody better to go with, I think he's certainly worth considering.
Tancredo is far too divisive to be elected statewide. He was from one of the most conservative districts in the state, and he consistently underperformed in comparison to Bush in the district.
Salazar is likable and sufficiently moderate to be virtually impossible to beat barring a national wave, or a really good candidate. I think frm. Gov. Bill Owens would have a shot, possibly frm. Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell, but neither are likely to come out of retirement.
Other then that, almost anybody is going to be a longshot.

and really the primaries decide who will get the R nod to run.
I hardly think it rises to backstabbing it might be selfish but who does not want to move up in their job?
He is a good guy to by the way.

"Who doesn't want to move up in their job?"
People who don't see public service as a "job" but instead as a path to doing what's right for America.
If he actually wants what's best for America, sorry, there is no way in hell he'd parachute into the Senate race at this point.

Please name me one politician who see "public service" not as a job. We all know it's a job and a job with power because they get paid so well and I am not talking about their base salary.
It's a natural progression...congressman, Senator, run at the Presidency or straight from the Senate to a lobbyist firm.
I don't mean to be Jaded I have just become that over the years.
By the way I would vote for John Bolton and I would love to see him run for the Senate. I am really hoping Peter Pace runs for the Senate now there is a true public servant.

I'd heard that he was considering running for the Senate, but it was gonna be against Ken Salazar in 2010.
If he's running against Ken Salazar in '10 that's totally different. I don't think he'd have the best chance of winning, but I wouldn't begrudge him at all for trying in that race.

I just want to see if Tancredo will announce an endorsement. My guess would be for Fred but maybe Huck used the same voodoo on Tancredo as he did on Gilchrist.

Too bad he just didn't catch on. A poor showing would have just been ammunition for the "See, immigration is not an issue" crowd. He has done well by making sure the other candidated address the issue and dropping out now with an endorsement could actually make the difference in the early primaries for someone, like Thompson, who needs the boost.
Look, I've actually come to respect Tancredo more rather than less over the course of his Presidential campaign, but his endorsement isn't going to mean jack, I'm afraid.
Oh, and in case you hadn't noticed, the two softest guys on immigration in the field are 1 and 2 in the national polls right now, and one of them is leading Iowa.

John McCain is in 4th place.

Every single GOP candidate for president is claiming to be tough on illegal immigration.
When Mitt and Rudy clashed on the subject of illegal immigration in a recent debate they were each trying to prove they were tougher than the other on illegal immigration.
"The defense of our nation begins with the defense of our borders." - Rep. Tom Tancredo
Rudy, Mitt, and Huck are the weakest GOP candidates on Immigration,...and yet they are the top 3 nationally, at this juncture. If Tancredo bails, his organization would help whomever he endorses- which will probably be Fred Thompson.
This is the critical issue of the campaign- GOP voters need to go with someone who has an established track record on this issue, and doesn't blow smoke- and that is Fred.
Maybe it's just me, but I thought wanting to give amnesty to illegals was a little weak. I don't know how anyone can think there is anyone weaker on this issue than McCain.
The GOP campaign and the country have been strengthened by having Congressman Tancredo in the race. He has kept the issue of border security front and center in the debate, where it certainly belongs!
It is my sincere hope that Rep. Tancredo will continue to lend his voice and leadership to this important issue.
I'm absolutely positive we haven't heard the last of this fine American.
Thanks again, Congressman Tancredo.
Department of Homeland Security head. If McCain wants to prove he is enforcement-first, he should throw that out there.
I am looking forward to having less candidates.

Hunter, and Paul will probably pick up most of Tancredo's supporters. They appear to be the next strongest candidates on illegal immigration.

I like Hunter, but they both needs to concede and let us pare this race down to the few who really do have a chance at winning.
HWSNBN will probably end up as VP on the (D) ticket.

Tancredo better not bail and drop into the Senate race. We already have an excellent candidate in Schaffer and the last thing we need is a divisive primary.
I'm hoping he's just announcing he's dropping out and endorsing someone else, probably Thompson, because if he's running for Senate it will be the single most selfish and backstabbing decision in politics I've seen in recent years.
