The Debate Tonight
By Erick Posted in 2008 — Comments (81) / Email this page » / Leave a comment »
There is a debate going on tonight on Univision. I don't get the channel. If you're watching, feel free to put your thoughts here.
[Update by Ben]: Unlike Erick, I do get Univision. It really wasn't a particularly riveting debate - Ron Paul got booed for being Ron Paul, Thompson had a couple good one liners, Mitt had to give a convoluted explanation about his hiring/firing of the landscaping company, but Craig Romney gave some pretty good spin about it (in fluent Espanol!) afterward to the reporters, nothing really out of the ordinary.
The undecided voter reviews from Univision's viewers - most of whom seemed to have been far better screened than CNN's, including a few University of Miami students and some veterans who actually seemed to be Republicans - gave high marks to Giuliani and Huckabee in particular, and had pretty divided views about Romney.
That's about it. Feel free to tune in if you know any Spanish, they'll re-run the coverage through the night. And I highly recommend reading victor cocchia's recap - and Babalu Blog was there, too.

for a couple months for work, they were filming a movie near the Macy's on State.
I think they film a lot of movies in Chicago...I just think they should film more TV shows.
Maybe even have presidential debates there (just to bring it back to the thread at hand).
...I agree and was happy/will be happy to shoot my show there. The reason there are not more shows there have to do with the tax credit, which needs to be renewed every two years... and this is where people start falling asleep.)
There are also a lot of Spanish speaking Americans in Chicago (attempting to stay on topic, as well),
a lot of Spanish people there. When you do consulting work for businesses and their insurance companies trying to get them up and running after storms, you tend to see a lot of Spanish people on work crews.
I wouldn't fall asleep on the tax credit issue. it's an interesting tax that can help businesses. I just don't know how businesses can afford to stay in Chicago...at least that's what I sort of got from the owners of many small businesses I worked with.
Or how a city can be so negligent in the upkeep of their sewers as well.
I do wish there was a bit more diversity in political thought in Chicago though... not very diverse there...or what I call "mini-diverse" left to lefter to lefterer!
Still... I love Chicago. And the Dems should have a debate there again soon! Maybe in Polish.
just to pick at you a little
the macy's execs were idiots to rename it macy's, and i hope they suffer

however, they did indeed leave the Marshall Fields museum and stuff inside.
hell, they destroyed the Bon Marche and Meier & Frank in the Northwest.
The Bon Marche was one of the first other dept stores they bought, and they wanted to slowly change the name...so for about a year it remained the Bon Marche...then went to Bon Macy's for a year or two, then to Macy's. How stupid.
That is a BEAUTIFUL department store...much nicer than the original Macy's.
And Macy's won't suffer, or they'll buy you Gideon and you'll become Macy's1789.
I get the channel, but sadly they don't even show the english translation that the candidates are getting, and the candidates' direct answers are being directly spoken over by the spanish translation, so it's impossible to hear what they say.

Its up to the rest of us to learn Spanish if we want to know whats going on, instead of being a bunch of racists expecting immigrants (and their native born children) to learn to function in English.

You could watch it closed captioned in English on CC3. Just press the closed captioning button a few times and you'll get it.
It's awfully delayed though so it makes it a pain in the ass to watch. Better off reading a transcript.
But why should people who don't speak English care about who becomes President of the US?
Is fluency in English no longer required for naturalization?

And I'm fairly certain Fred just hit a question about the Hispanic community out of the park.

for that sort of comment no matter what your position on immigration is. I suspect it was one of our friendly Kos kids trying to make us look bad, considering their short history.
I wont get to the see the debate for another hour since its on at 7 pm west coast time, but its going to be interesting to see what Fred is saying, as well as the rest of the candidates. Lets see if they stay on cue with their campaign rhetoric, or they try to curry favor with the Hispanic crowd/voters.
I really think tonight we will get to see how serious the candidates are about immigration reform and how to deal with the problem of illegal immigration. Seems that many have forgotten there is a difference between the two, and try to combine the two, giving the populace the impression that one who is tough on illegal immigration is anti-immigrant.
Which we all know is entirely false.

Thanks for the link because I was totally clueless as to why that was offensive. In fact, after reading the article, I still am. LOL. A word that arose from "bean-eater" is offensive? I don't know what's worse - the person who first came up with that word because they thought that Latinos would find it offensive or that Latinos actually find such a silly word offensive.
I'm Danish, so that'd be like someone trying to insult me by calling me a pastry. Right? haha. oh well...trying to figure people out is an endlessly frustrating task that I rarely try to engage in.
Como se dice Huckleberry en espanol?
how to translate huckleberry as in the "berry" but if youre trying to say a person whose kind of a huckleberry, i think "bobo" might work. It actually depends on actually which country youre in as to how translate it since slang varies from country to country.

Guess which candidate was booed for stating that he wanted to talk with Hugo and Fidel?
Fred received a round of applause with this line on Fidel
Let's hope he "doesn't survive 10 U.S. presidents" Vows to maintain embargo should Raul take over.

the debate and the first three questions are just basically repeats of each other "why has the republican party lost the hispanic vote" though they keep decreasing the percentage. They are not talking about any issues, only how the Republican party ignores hispanics.
The translation over the english is a pain (i speak both) I cant figure out which one to listen too!
"Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other."

was on whether english should be the official language, two stock answers from Paul and McCain
now finally they get to imigration....Guiliani talks about the border and Huckabee answers that those that are here should return to their country and begin the process because its not fair to those who do it legally shouldnt suffer
UGh now they are throwing out a statistic saying that 70% of the US population believes we should legalize those who are illegal. Where are they getting their statistics from
"Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other."
-- John Adams
answer to this question. (which they have now inferred to be why are republicans against legalizing immigrants) ugh... he talks about respecting the rule of law and those who are here illegally need to go back and get in line
"Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other."
-- John Adams
if he will revise his amnesty plan. He talks about securing the border and veers off to Iraq and hispanics there who came here legally...we can not permit that this nation is without compassion...for whatever that means..
now to romney who reported his gardners so they ask him if others should report illegals

again says that the american public will be compassionate to these people once we secure our borders not before in response to their question about what to do with the three millino hispanic babies who have one or more parents in another country.
Romney comes back to a nation of laws and a nation of opportunities and protecting legal immigration.
"Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other."
-- John Adams
I have to disagree with McCain on this one. Compassion is great. But when it comes to public policy issues such as immigration, we should reserve our compassion for those who have not broken our immigration laws.
Lots of people from all around the world want to immigrate to America. That's why we can afford to say "no" to those who come here illegally. If there really are "jobs America won't do," let's fill those jobs with people who have not already demonstrated that laws are made to be broken.
now they are asking how we confront this rising tide of anti-hispanic sentiment that is surging in the country due to the anti immigrant debate, and how it affects hispanic legal immigrants and citizens.
Hunter has a good answer to them again.
Guiliani ---- stock answer
Huckabee says that once we secure the border and everyone is here legally the problem will go away. Its important to get rid of this illegal problem so no one whose here legally will get questioned anymore.
"Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other."

to be honest, i dont think that there has really been anything of value to most republican voters here, but in that vein, those on the stage have done a good job of responding to their questions which basically are the same theme...that being "why are hispanics being mistreated and why are republicans losing their votes"
That might be simplifying it a bit, but the truth of the matter is that they have focused on no other point solely on the hispanic vote, why are we penalizing the poor children (Where is Rev. Lovejoys wife to say....think of the children" and why is there so much hate towards hispanics.
Id like to see them, and hope they focus more on problems of the country and what our candidates will do about them.

Proud supporter of McCain '00 and McCain '08
and he who shall not be names is first...ugh
he gets booed loudly for saying that we should talk to them just like we talked to stalin and mao and kruzhev (sic)...
we have problems in central and south america because its our fault, were the big bad guy who interferes.
What a nutjob..sorry but i had to
Huckabee --- Chavez is not our friend...Venezuela is not Chavez, the people of Venezuela are not chavez and we need to remember that...hopefully someday there will be a free democratic society there for the people
Guiliani --- Agrees with Paul. we should talk to him. He gets booed loudly. Yes he is acting like a dictator...but there is hope that the people will see Chavez for who he is...talks about a freee market with latin america (gets cheered)

Jonathan Martin at politico.com writes: Rudy pulls line of the night (so far)
After Ron Paul comes out for engaging Chavez and Castro, Rudy steps up to the plate and hits one over the Green Monster and onto the Mass Pike:
"I agree with the way King Juan Carlos talked to Chavez," Giuliani said.
With that, he just hit the hottest of hot buttons in the Spanish-speaking world.

which happens to be the target of your link.
Here's a slice of the Spectator's time-line:
Ron Paul Gets Booed, Badly - 7:52:13 PM
- For saying we should try to be friendly with Castro and Chavez. Paul literally said that the U.S. creates the Castros of the world. Seriously, is he smoking crack tonight? Did he ever hear of the Soviet Union?
Rudy Gets Cheered, Loudly - 7:53:13 PM
- For slapping down Ron Paul and promising a hard line on Hugo Chavez.
Fred Gets In A Good Line on Castro - 7:54:55 PM
- Let's hope he "doesn't survive 10 U.S. presidents" Vows to maintain embargo should Raul take over.
But, according to The Politico, McCain was a day late and a dollar short:
McCain had the King Juan Carlos line ready, too...
- ...and even had the actual Spanish ready to go!
- But Rudy beat him to it and McCain's effort came off as trying a bit too hard. As did his subsequent mention of various pet Cuban causes.

“Well, the trouble with our liberal friends is not that they are ignorant, but that they know so much that isn't so.” – Ronald Reagan
how do we make sure Castro doesnt last another 10 presidents
Thompson --- gets a laugh...keep with the embargo
Romney --- we need analyze who are the castros. they are totalitarian leaders...the cubans live terrified...we need to recognize that these people are cowards...we need to continue our embargo....
McCain --- panders to venezuelans for winning the referendum (does McCain begin every response with I have this, or ive done that) we should not lift the embargo....investigate something, i didnt get it.
"Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other."

hispanics 66% believe we should be out of Iraq, why are we staying in since they think we should be out
Hunter --- another great answer. Talks about his sons third tour, talks about the surge and the voilence decreasing....talks about victory there and that Iraq will be our friend and not our enemy because we didnt leave.
Guiliani ---- we need to make sure they have a stable government and we have a chance to win, nothing is guaranteed but we need to fight and keep going.. I have a hard time understanding the translator his accent is hard
McCain --- again begins I was the only one on stage to.... I was the only one who did...our strategy was faulty and this one is better. Then he talks about hispanics who got green cards approved but died the week before in Iraq.
Huckabee --- because we are winning thats why we shoudlnt leave. the spirit of our soldiers is honor and to leave would destroy their moral for a generation. The security of the middle east and the rest of the world is at stake. We have to stay to keep terrorist from launching new cells there
"Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other."
-- John Adams
Romney ---- doesnt give a timeline
Thompson --- iraq is aprt of the global war, and given that we have to be clear that if we leave we will create a more dangerous situation for us and our security.
Paul --- i wont bother repeating his tripe.
please remember im doing my best to paraphrase what the translators are saying, which is not exactly what the candidates are saying but fairly close
"Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other."
-- John Adams
McCain ---- we have the best medical system in the world but the prices have gone up....talks about giving a 5000 tax credit to afford it....can invest it in a medical savings account talks about Reagan...says we need to take better cdare of ourselves
Guiliani --- there are only 17 M without coverage if it were 50 or 60 would be a larger problem...talks about the same credits and savings accounts....Im sorry I cant understand the translator...but he got a big applause at the end
Huckabee --- now Univions says its 47M who dont have it....he responds well that this is not a real number, its more price which we need to worry about....we should focus on preventing illness....universal coverage???? maybe we should have michael moore take his advice and go to Cuba, but the rest of us will stay here for our coverage.
Romney --- my program in Mass covered everyone...the best preventive medicine is to see a doctor...you cant be healthy without that...we can do it witouth raising taxes ore government money...He talk about his program in Mass and how he did it...
Now its 15M hispanics who dont have healthcdare
Thompson --- a market solution is the best way to go....its best for our society and our people if a free market solution is found.
"Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other."

At least they are now tackling issues, though they are always prefacing it on how it affects hispanics..
Hunter has had the best and most direct answers tonight, and is not afraid to say things that are unpopular with this crowd.
Guiliani's translator is extremely hard for me to follow, unfortunately his accent is tough for me, so please forgive me if I miss something there, but he really hasnt been the focus of the debate. They have really asked Romney and McCain the most questions, followed by Thompson and Huckabee.
Hope this is helping people.
Again, if I misinterpret something please pardon me, but I think youre all getting the jistof what is going on.

90% of hispanics think that our education system should be improved, our public education.
Thompson --- no one is going to say that that the federal government can solve the problem of education, we spend x amount federally but the states should have more control...and then something about solving some problem.
McCain --- Charter schools....we have teachers looking for other jobs which we need to change...I went to a fabulous school in a lower income neighborhood in OPhilly....the kids use uniforms....their parents participate and you know what, they are getting better because there are choices and competition....the parents need alternatives....I think if we have competition then they will get better.
Romney --- we have a great model .... we need to pay our teachers well....talks about his schools in mass and how the scores went up....involving the parents....
"Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other."
-- John Adams
at a very high rate....how to change the high drop out rate
Huckabee --- education is the obstacles in our way, we need more science and math... they dont drop out because they are bored, its not because they are not smart. We need to have art programs to interest them. Music, We cant have bored students....thats why they drop out
Guiliani --- I am a result of catholic schools,, my parents decided to send me to that....we can create a revolution in education....Choice is the way to do that....the government shouldnt obligate someone to go to a bad school....give the power to the parents
Hunter --- In california he talks about a teacher who taught math in the "barrio" The teachers union is holding us back...we need people who can inspire kids to stay in school.
"Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other."
-- John Adams
the hispanics are the biggest minority soon well be 25% what part do hispanics will play in the future of the united states
Huckabeee---- everyone who comes to America needs to be americans. like italians and germans and such behind....there is opportunity and hope here...we can have big dreams here, our quality doesnt depend on our ancestors but each one can make his own future...we can create opportunity and live free (doesnt answer the question)
Hunter --- Urges people to register to vote first. Talks about a lady in el salvador....Invokes Reagan..We represent freedom and values....the democrats think that this is agreat place because of what the government does for the people, we believe its great because of the people.
Thompson --- to help us as strong as we can be the most important thing is that national security so we can protect all communities. Hispanics are quick to defend their country and the hispanics are very ethical...they believe marraige is between a man and a woman, and that family is the center of society...and they will help to make us stronger.
MCCain --- we will be a richer country because of their music and their compasion and their values. they will make this country richer....hispanics love this country and want to defend this nation so we can make a a great country.
Guiliani --- they are at a great level and have helped to make this country better. their work...they have a great diverse tradition....they make our country better by being here....
Romney .... we need all sorts of poeopple we are the hope of the world. we are competing now with other countries like China and India....talks about great values and we need them here bedause this is the land of the free and they love freedom

while reading some of it (looking for the Romney "lawnworkers question"), it occured to me just why this program bugged me.
The question popped into my mind, "Am I reading what these candidates originally said in English, or am I reading a re-translation back into English of the Spanish translation?"
IOW, how do I know if this is what the man said or if it's only what the translator(s) thought he said? If we have a nation that has a significant portion of the electorate who can't understand the primary language of the candidates, doesn't that put that part of the electorate at the mercy of the translator?
Consider the fact that even among all of us who speak English there are often significant differences in what we take away from a political debate/speech/discussion. It has to be extremely difficult to catch any idiomatic nuance, or even a technical detail, after it goes through translation. As another observer said, Huckabee lost a lot of his charisma--it just didn't translate.
Where am I wrong?
The "Third Worst Person in the World" and aiming higher.
as if the words in this posting are the words of the candidates, but the questions have been translated from spanish to english so they are not exactly as posed.

is formatted and much easier to read than townhall's.
Link to the pdf file is here, and it's on the public side.
The “lawnworkers question” begins on Page 16 of the pdf.
Governor Romney, some days ago you fired a company that used to take care of your landscaping because supposedly they were hiring undocumented workers.
The question is this, did you report, officially, that the people or the company to immigration authorities? And do you think that should others report undocumented aliens, the people that you suspect are undocumented?

“Well, the trouble with our liberal friends is not that they are ignorant, but that they know so much that isn't so.” – Ronald Reagan
First and foremost there is no way to determine a "winner" here tonight because there really wasnt anything of substance said. All of the questions were focused solely on the hispanic community (more on that later) and given that, there was no new ground to cover. Certainly it was unlike the last few debates where the candidates talked policy and went after each other. I do not think any candidate talked to, or about, any other candidate tonight. It was not a debate at all. In fact it was seven men on stage answering questions.
If anyone made an impact tonight it was Hunter for being direct and firm in his answers on immigration and not bowing to the pressure to say that we should be kind to illegals. Even though it wasnt popular he stayed on his message.
Thompson was strong tonight. He looked (and yes im talking asthetics) much better than other nights, he looked alive and fresh. I dont know if it was the lighting or what. He was the closest to the true "conservative message" not taking the bait to call for more social programs or government intervention to fix "problems" faced by hispanics, but saying market solutions should solve health care problems and relegating education to the states.
I dont think Guiliani or Huckabee hurt themselves nor helped themselves. Its tough for Huckabee to excel in this format because his charisma is drowned out by the translator.
McCain had some decent answers, but his tendency to start every response with I did this, or when I did that, or Im the only one on stage who has...really turned me off. Im sure it wont bother others, but I think he needs to talk more about what he would do in the future. We all know that he has experience, but what are you going to do for the future.
Lastly...to Univision. I think it would serve both you and the hispanic population better if you were to engage the candidates and create a debate where ideas were presented and we could see differences in the candidates. Having all the questions relating to the hispanic population does nothing to solve one of the biggest problems faced today by the hispanic community, that is integration. How can the rest of America view this segment of the population as their brother or sister if these stations keep playing on the sentiment of exclusion. It only perpetuates the us against them attitude. Instead of asking question that pertained only to the hispanic community how about questions for all of America. I think this would go a long way towards bringing the community in general into the mainstream of America, while at the same time maintaining their cultural heritage and uniqueness.
Hope that makes sense for all, and if i missed something in the debate, sorry some of the translators made it difficult for me (especially guiliani's)

his view of what went on stays pretty much in line with my assessment. I disagree with him on Thompsons performance. I think he came across very well, he was very matter of fact, and since this wasnt really a debate, but a q and a session I think that was his delivery was appropriate for the event.
It certainly was not an event that played to Huckabee or Guiliani strengths, that is communicating.
