The McCain Speech

I should have mentioned this last night but it deserves notice however late the notice may be: John McCain really did give a terrific speech last night. Especially impressive was his courageous endorsement of free trade and free markets; something that is not fashionable these days, unfortunately. The arguments McCain laid out for free markets were elegant, easily accessible and could be used to blunt and counter Democratic protectionist rhetoric that will continue throughout the primary season and into the fall. Here's hoping that McCain keeps up this line of argument, especially while Hillary and Obama tear each other apart in the weeks and months ahead.

I'm sure the economic arguments had to be "easily accessible." After all, he had to understand them himself, right? He's not so good with that.

It was a decent speech though.

This is great stuff. Plain speaking on big issues without pandering on condescension.

Nothing is inevitable in America. We are the captains of our fate. We're not a country that prefers nostalgia to optimism; a country that would rather go back than forward. We're the world's leader, and leaders don't pine for the past and dread the future. We make the future better than the past. We don't hide from history. We make history.

This is pure boiler-plate Campaign Speak 101. The whole speech was a cliche-ridden load of crap delivered in the tone of a lullaby.

If the bar for effective speaking has been lowered to dull permutations of stating the obvious, I suspect we're all in trouble.

IT's compulsory to have some standard waffle in these speaches. "A great nation....." or "Motherhood is what brought us here today". But on the issues there is sound stuff rather than a large serving of hope/change.

"I believe we must adjourn this meeting to some other place." - The last recorded words of Adam Smith.

I've notice quite a change in McCain's demeanor, in my opinion for the better. Maybe it's my attitude changing and I'm projecting that.

That speech was a good one IMHO.
