Democrats labored long and hard to frustrate and hamper the war effort in Iraq, a job the troops want to finish, but at the end of the day even the likes of Jack Murtha couldn't pull the trigger on voting "no" on continued funding for the men and women in the field. Continuation of the war effort - at least, for long enough to give Gen. Petraeus and the rest of the military leadership and rank and file the time to make some real headway under the "surge" strategy - ended up garnering broad, bipartisan support, with only a handful of left-wing extremists (and a few Republicans casting votes of protest at pork in the bill) voting no. In the Democrat/Socialist-controlled Senate, for example, the vote to fund the troops was 80-14.

But consider that the few extremists who voted against it and against the mainstream consensus includes the top two Democrat contenders for president, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. John Edwards and Bill Richardson also voiced their support for a "no" vote (Chris Dodd, rumored to be conducting a 2008 campaign, also voted no). In 2004, of course, John Kerry famously tried to get out of a vote of this nature by saying he voted for it before he voted against it. The odds are pretty strong that the next nominee of the Democratic party will once again end up going before the general electorate in search of some mealy-mouthed excuse for taking the McGovernite position. Or maybe by next year, they won't even bother to hide the fact that the far left will be calling the shots if they win the White House next November.

Even though the Iraq War is unpopular, these votes against funding the troops is going to be a difficult vote to justify to the general electorate, especially for Clinton who voted to go to war and then denies funds to the soldiers.

Clinton is clearly scared Obama is going to take the nomination, and had to make this vote. The Republican nominee will have a lot of fun beating her over the head with it, like Bush did with Kerry.

Senator Brownback also did not vote one way or the other on this bill ether, being too busy with something really really important to show up and cast a vote.

While his vote would have been symbolic on this issue as passage was not in doubt, unlike the immegration amendment he skipped, he is running for President and it would have been good to have been on the record with a vote.

I found where the missing Senator Brownback has gone AWOL to.

"FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
PRESS RELEASE
May 24, 2007

DES MOINES, Ia -U.S. Senator Sam Brownback announced today that he has enlisted the support of Norma McCorvey, the now pro-life "Jane Roe" of the infamous Roe v Wade decision, for his presidential campaign.

.....

--
Today, Brownback has scheduled campaign events in Council Bluffs, Sioux City, Des Moines, Ames and Davenport with Christian activist and historian, Dave Barton. After a morning event in Cedar Rapids, Brownback will address activists for his "Iowa Headquarters Grand Opening" event tomorrow at noon."

Guess all these "important" campaign activities were much more important than actually doing his job as a Senator from Kansas and voting for funding for troops in Iraq or amendments to the Bush Shamnesty immegration bill. Funny thing though, McCain, Clinton and Obama found time to actually do the job they were elected to.

I keep hearing that the Dems who voted no were denying funding for the troops. But the first Accountability Act passed overwhelmingly and funded the troops generously, albeit with benchmarks. The President vetoed, thus actually denying funding for the troops.

Both sides could have continued playing chicken with the lives of the troops, but thankfully the majority party decided the security of our fighting sons and daughters were more important than political gamesmanship.

Would that our Commander in Chief felt the same.

Iggy, proud father of two Marines

You really need to check your facts. The benchmarks and reporting trip wires sabotaged the original bill - tactically it would have been a military disaster. But that's what happens when a sorry bunch of beclowned lawyers try to legislate military strategy. As a father of two Marines, you should be very relieved that the original bill failed and thank the Republicans for standing up. Now the military can direct operations instead of Paloozi and company.

I wish you and your sons a great Memorial Day.

Oh right, it's big bad evil George Bush who was engaging in "political gamesmanship" with the funding bill. We are supposed to ignore:
- the early and frequent veto threats that George Bush gave, yet the Democrats passed the bill anyway knowing it would be vetoed;
- the political theater of wasting time so the DOA bill could be passed on "Mission Accomplished" day;
- the immense amount of irrelevant pork that was ladled into the bill (as a previous poster noted); and
- the arrogant tone of Her Majesty Pelosi for claiming to speak for "the American people" in their surrender plan.

Are we not supposed to believe that the Democrats are playing to their base and engaging in political tricks with the amount of time they wasted? Oh no, it's all George Bush's Fault! If he had only realized the OBVIOUS WILL of the American People expressed in the actions of San Francisco Liberal Nancy Pelosi, the world would be a happy place, the birds would sing, and joy and tranquility would reign.

Oh give me a freakin' break.

The Democrats surrendered on surrendering because it was the only politically viable option left to them. If they had really thought the American People wanted us to immediately surrender, they would have continued to play their political games. But they don't, so they didn't. I give them credit for that much.
