The Michigan Debate

By Erick Posted in Comments (423) / Email this page » / Leave a comment »

The GOP debate starts at 4pm on CNBC. It will re-air tonight at 9pm.

Today will be Fred Thompson's first debate. I'll be on XM Satellite Radio's new POTUS Channel in about twenty minutes discussing all of this.

In the meantime, have at it boys and girls -- a debate open thread.

And the first question goes to Thompson. He's not looking directly at the camera. He's slow out of the gate though answering the question.

Good job pulling it to spending.

mentioned an important characteristic of both men. The pundits disparage Fred because he doesn't launch into a litany of reasons why (name it) makes him better than Rudy. I'd rather have a President who thinks about a question before he answers, rather than one who seems to have all the answers memorized.

Mitt, OTOH, seems to be spring-loaded with answers to every question, and they all seem to lead him to Rudy. I noticed that, and I like Mitt.

Well, it was Ike that made that statement first. But it was in a very specific context and I think it's been wildly misused by the left, especially considering what it means when you line up the supposed meaning of it according to the leftists, and Ike's actions.

Iraq is a sovereign nation. We don't have the right to carve up another nation that wants to stay in tact.

Iraq was a sovereign nation before we invaded it too. So was Nazi Germany, Japan, etc.

I think partition is a terrible idea for a whole bunch of reasons, but we built the new Iraqi government, and until it stands on it's own, we can do away with it if we like. There are a whole bunch of reasons as to why that's a bad idea, but if I thought it was a good idea I'd not hesitate to do it.

We established a new government for Japan as well. Basically, it went this way: The Japanese government voted on stuff, then, after having decided, asked MacArthur if they could do what they wanted. He said yes or no. And sometimes he did say no, try again. If that's necessary in Iraq, then it's necessary. I don't think it is right now, but that's not the point.

He said he would consult with his lawyers about whether he (as President) would have to consult with Congress before taking a hypothetical premptive strike to protect the security of the United States. The question was legal in nature. Does the President have to consult with Congress? I would hope that all our nominees would consult attorneys should that hypothetical situation arise.

Should have said:

"If Iran became a clear and present danger to the United States requiring immediate action I believe a President can act without Congressional approval to secure American safety. If immediate is not necessary, then of course I will first secure Congressional approval before entering into a war."

I mean- that is the loophole that those lawyers will be looking at right? So why not put it out and say it.

but I don't think it's a flub for a candidate to say that he would consult with his attorneys should that occassion arise. I hope every candidate would.

Haven't we given lawyers enough power already?

or does it mean that our exports will start doing better, and people might start buying more American goods?

I'm beginning to suspect that Ron Paul is being used as a tool a-la- Ralph Nader, 2000

Oz

www.first-cut-politics.blospot.com

Is that Paul could actually pull a Nader and run as an independent or a Libertarian. After all, he's already got a primary for his house seat, and may well not keep it.

That said, I'm not convinced that he wouldn't pull more D votes then R votes, being as how he's so pure against the war, which a lot of moonbats would like, but it's also entirely possible he'll pull more R votes. Basically, he'd be an X factor that would make things very difficult.

Anyhow, I hope he doesn't run as an I or L, and I hope he loses his primary for his House seat.

Iran has the ability to close the straights where the oil in the region travels through. If we attacked them they would do it in a heartbeat. The wold economy would grind to a halt without it.

If Iran attempted to close the straights, the closure would last less than a day. Of course, that would assume that RP hasn't pulled the US Navy back to port in the US to protect our borders and the seven mile limit (or whatever it is).

Fred has been a professional actor for years. He makes $$$ doing it. You can't work in HWood or TV without a SAG card. I suppose he could "stand on principle" and burn his card and give up a fortune in income and royalties.

FA.., er, I mean SAG card.

NOT a good idea to name bad unions in DETROIT!

and I think Matthews is disappointed by it. The union answer was clever and relaxed.

You may not be interested in war, but war is interested in you.

we could argue Rudy, McCain, and Mitt are more polished, but that does not equal a win. McCAin was more polished than GWB, but GWB had the right ideas (people thought).

I have been hard on Fred, only because he has not done anything yet. I kept arguing people fell in love too soon. But I think he has shown he can stand on that stage and he has a good chance of winning this thing.

Molon Labe!

Does he know how his membership dues were used?

you don't WORK in Hollywood unless you are union!

to which membership is not a virtue.

Don't we ALL have union members in our family history or tree? The pandering is disgusting, even if I understand the environment they're in. Unions are anathema anymore to true conservatives.

It's starting to get laughs, too.

it pretty much does exacerbate every problem we have.

According to the WSJ, "Illegals" have the lowest foreclosure rate of any home owners in the US.

It's a matter of the law of large numbers. First of all, there are very few mortgage programs that will loan to illegals. Secondly, they don't have access to much money. Third, their lending requirements are restrictive as hell.

It's not like they're going through the FNMA portfolio and looking for folks who checked the "illegal" block.

This is another example that you should never, ever let a statistician balance your check book.

that sort of begs the question of why an illegal is buying property anyway doesn't it! You know to me that makes it sort of a big problem.

to lend to illegals. They are basically demonstration programs and the amount of money (relatively speaking) is peanuts. Also, the underwriting guidelines are pretty restrictive (again, relatively speaking).

You're dealing with very small numbers and it's not at all comparable to the rest of the mortgage world.

I wouldn't trust anything the WSJ says about illegals

Illegal Americans in Mexico! That would be ZERO foreclosures.

He said "illegal immigration".....

It's war -- so when can we start shooting back at the enemy Democrats?

It's really bad when even Tancredo is laughing at himself talking about immigration.

Giving Brownback the chance for two good lines, including "My mother is not an illegal immigrant," was just stupid. I'm sure Sam's happy though, heh.

Matthews in an economic debate on CNBC. How do we culturally police the internet. bravo you moron.

Ask not what I can do for my country, ask what my country can do for me. Washington Elected Elite

Because everyone knows the major issues can be discussed in 30 seconds or less!

CNBC is a joke. This moderation is awful. The Republicans shouldn't have come to this.

HTML Help Central for Red Staters

the moderators have demonstrated their incompetence in questioning, but the candidates have turned their chickensh*t questions into chicken salad!

I agree. This has been a good debate. Crisp and fast paced!

Tancredo is still the one-trick pony on illegal immigration and Hunter seems too angry -- anger is a Dem thing!

the only thing I brought with me was my anger, I admit.

I love Fred's question to Chris Matthews.... Way to put him in his place Fred!

Matthews tried to make fun of Fred's going over after starting off with a one word yes/no answer. So then Fred said "Nobody asked your opinion, Christopher..." really putting him in his place.

that is definitely "inside politics." It was designed to cause the candidate the Libs most fear to look uninformed. He handled it OK. Anybody remember the answer? Anybody know what the right answer is? In 30 seconds, please.
