The Republican Nominee for President of the United States is John McCain
Huckabee Expected To Drop Out at 9:15 PM

CNN has projected Senator McCain has 1,195 pledged delegates. This is sufficient to win the Republican nomination at the Convention. Governor Huckabee is expected to drop out of the race in a few minutes.
This primary was one of the most open primaries in recent history. A strong field of candidates represented the diverse wings of the party with different strengths and weaknesses. The voters spoke through their wallets, their activism, and of course their votes.
Congratulations to Senator McCain on this well-earned victory. It is time to look forward toward November and to unite behind the Senator from Arizona.

As a McCain 2000 voter this has been a long time coming. And although I didn't expect to feel much different today since this was a foregone conclusion, I must admit that I'm smiling pretty big and feeling rather relieved. Without even getting to vote in a primary yet, I finally feel like there is someone I will be voting for instead of against this year.

I didn't vote in the primaries in 2000, but McCain was my first choice then, and as I've belabored at Redstate, my second-first choice this time.
I feel very satisfied with this result. I really think we made the smartest, best choice from among our candidates.

..and its horrendous. Adam C is driving home from Durham now and I'm giving him election updates, but it's a pretty hard slog for him right now.

and thanks for the quick, decisive and classy victory.
Would it be tacky to note the contrast with you know whom?

Nearly every time I hear that man speak, I gain more respect for him.
I hope he will remain a prominent leader in the GOP.

I just sent in $35 for signs and donation. Please begin his bid both to his campaign and the Republican Committee.

Sure hope McCain doesn't stumble and bumble tonight.
It's really hard to dislike Huck personally even when you disagree with him.
If Huckabee believes all this that he is speaking for and that there are important congressional battles then why is he not running for Senate?
He isn't going to be the VP nominee. And the party needs him in Arkansas. It wouldn't be a sure thing, but if he won, he would be looking good in the future. And if he doesn't run, then I think he will disappear.
David Gregory (supposedly unbiased reporter) gleefully reported that Obama's campaign will be referring to McCain as John W. McCain. They want to run against Bush for a 3rd term. I think McCain's middle name is Sidney. Gregory says it isn't the same as calling obama by his REAL middle name. LOL. The elite seem to make all the rules only apply when they benefit.
How childish are these losers? sheesh.

John McCain: My campaign won't use Hussein even though his campaign insists on playing this game. We feel Hussein would be inappropriate and unfairly bias the race. If his campaign insists on name calling in the election so be it. We would never stoop to using Hussein as a pejorative and we wish to elevate from the partisan politics of the past.

before running in the general! Hillary's margin of victory in Ohio along with her now likely Texas victory is definitely changing the tone on the dem side.
If either Hillary or Obama were to refer to McCain as W, that could backfire on them pretty heavily - especially after the furor over Obama's unspeakable middle name...
This Huckabee supporter will now promote McCain. Go GOP!

but won't use Obama's real middle name? It's so inspirational to have a nominee who will criticize his own party but wimps out against the opposition.
Instead of whining, get busy.

when McCain isn't going after the opposition with any vigor? IMO, it's up to our nominee to inspire the base to action. If McCain will go after Obama with the same energy that Obama will go after McCain, then I could see helping out.
If you have nothing to do but bash our nominee, go outside and play on the swings. We have work to do.
McCain's the leader. Follow, or get out of our way.

A moment of silence for those who have fought bravely..... Ok, The electorate has spoken. I for one will not fold my tent and go silently into the night. Even if McCain does have some flaws he is a heck lf a lot better than what the oposition is putting up. I will ask my friends to vote for McCain and to ask their friends to do the same. This is from the guy who is a die hard Thompson supporter.......
This stuff about using "W" just came out, & no one knows if it would really happen - let's give McCain a bit of a break here, the general election campaign's not started yet...
And someone needs to remind John McCain to be true to himself, and NOT pander to the right "wing nuts", if he wants to win in November, with the support of Independents and moderate Republicans -- the REAL Conservatives!!

to what's right. He has been wrong on issues such as the illegal alien situation. Like anyone, when he is wrong on an issue he should change his position to the right & correct side.
With the exception of a few principled Indys like Haystack, if most independents cared about politics, they would belong to a party. If they don't care strongly about the future of this country, why should I give a hoot about their opinion?
While I'm not crazy about moderate Rs in general, at least they have a stance, but it is ridiculous to call them the real conservatives.
I loved the line about democrats saying they will keep jobs in America while at the say time making it harder for them to do business here.
Normally I change the channel when McCain comes on because I can't stand listening to him.
Tonight I didn't feel that way.
His victory speech was pretty dang good. If he can keep this tack up, he very well may win some of us back.
I'm proud of our Party.

limited at this point.
McCain could have attacked the Democrats in general on this point, though, I agree.
By definition, an independent declares no ideological preference or loyalty; and moderate is defined as mediocre, of limited or average extent.
How can one in either position claim to be a "real conservative" with a straight face?

I'm an Ohio voter, and cast a proud symbolic vote for Fred Thompson today, but I will support McCain in the general, so congrats to him. He's run a good campaign...
Huckabee still got over thirty percent in both TX and OH. That's still a bad sign for McCain. Huckabee had no shot and no one was really paying attention and over one third of the base cast their ballot for a protest candidate.

filled with happiness.
Not much else to say, just thank you to the voters and to Sen. McCain and his wonderful family. It has been a long struggle but worth it.
Thanks to everybody who made it happen.
I knew the nomination was coming, of course, but I was surprised by the emotion I felt when I saw the projection on the screen. Congratulations to Senator McCain and let the good fight begin!
Here's to you John. Let's get it done.
You fought hard and won a challenging victory. And you'll make a good president.
But please, make government smaller so that our hopes, dreams, honor and lives don't have to rest primarily on the government.
I have been up-front & honest with disagreements on some policies. McCain was not my first or second choice.
McCain is now MY nominee, & I will support him. He may not be "perfect;" however, he is pretty darn good - exponentially better for the country & world than either Clinton or Obama.
Where do you get that McCain "has 1,195 pledged delegates"?
http://www.thegreenpapers.com/P08/R-PU.phtml
Before today, McCain had 812 bound or pledged delegates. He needed 379 bound delegates to reach 1191 bound delegates.
Of tonight's states:
Texas - 137 bound and 3 unbound
Ohio - 88 unbound
RI - 17 bound and 3 unbound
Vermont - 17 bound
Of the remaining states:
South Dakota - 24 bound and 3 unbound
Idaho - 26 bound and 6 unbound
Hawaii - 20 bound
Pennsylvania - 74 unbound
Oregon - 27 bound and 3 unbound
North Carolina - 69 bound
Indiana - 27 bound and 30 unbound
Kentucky - 45 bound
Mississippi - 36 bound and 3 unbound
Nebraska - 30 bound and 3 unbound
New Mexico - 29 bound and 3 unbound
Winning all four states tonight only gave McCain 171 more bound delegates at most. So he still needs at least 208 more bound delegates to reach 1191, out of the 390 left. His chances have (obviously) increased with Huckabee dropping out, but there's still two others in the race -- one of whom will likely have 1/3 of the delegates at the RNC ready to throw their unpledged votes to him if it gets to a second vote -- so anything can happen.
And then... anything CAN happen at the RNC, as history has shown.

Yes McCain has gotten to HIS magic number so what does he do now.
In Texas he got 51% of the Primary votes--thats 51% people, this is not someone who has excited the party. With 49% saying no to McCain how does he mend the fence, or more importantly does he want to mend it.
The numbers in our area seem to be the norm for Texas. Dems primary voters beat us 3-1. In the Caucus last evening, in my precint the Dems had 200+ show up, we has 8. There were Republican precint's in our county that had 1 show up while the Dems had 400. What are all of you McCainites excited about!
How can you get excited when the Dems are showing in record numbers and we cannot even get enough to show up to fill the County Convention roster.
McCain needs to get off this "Friends" talking point he thinks is working well for him and realize he is in a fight against not only the Dem's but for 30% of the Republican base. If he believes his handlers "don't worry they will come to you in the end-afterall where else can they go" BS HE will see how much he needed those "INTOLERANT Chrtistians".
There nothing at this point in time McCain has done to win my support. In fact he just keeps reaffirming my belief he does not deserve my vote. Until he starts working to get me back, I will sit on the sidelines-as many other thousands have done and WILL DO.
If the Election were today, I would Write A Name In for President. I will vote in November but it is up to McCain to work for my vote which means working for CONSERVATIVE Policies, not HIS OWN!!!
Guess the delegate math doesn't lie. This is truly the saddest day in the history of the modern GOP. Yes, by all means go and unite behind this two-faced chimera of a candidate and follow the marching band over the cliff. When he accidently called himself a liberal the other day he, for once, told the truth.
Can't wait to write in my choice on election day in November. It definitely WILL NOT be the little general from Arizona with the ego.
Not surprising you're also a RiNO.
