This Is A Man I Can Get Behind

Tennessee House Bill 0393 presently before the Tennessee Legislature would rename U.S. Highway 43 in Lawrenceburg, TN "Fred Thompson Boulevard." Except it won't now. Rep. Joey Hensley (R-Hohenwald) is withdrawing the bill. Why? Because he got this letter in the mail:

April 2, 2007

The Honorable Joey Hensley
Nashville, TN 37243

Dear Joey,

I read where the naming of a segment of U.S. Highway 43 in Lawrenceburg after me is under consideration. I cannot blame anybody if there is hesitation to name another thing for another politician or former politician. But I must say that I am very appreciative of my friends in Lawrenceburg and Lawrence County who originally had this idea. The fact that they would want to do this is more important to me than the naming itself. My daddy’s car lot was on that stretch of road, so it’s special to me, but the fact is that I didn’t build it and I didn’t pay for it. The taxpayers did. So it is entirely appropriate that it remain U.S. Highway 43 the way I remember it when I was a boy. Therefore, I would request that you thank my friends and withdraw the naming bill.

I really appreciate your work on this and the great job you are doing for our people. All the best to you and your colleagues.

Sincerely.
Fred Thompson

And with blog title, there would be viral rumors thru Kos and Wonkette in about an hour.

Maybe doing the smart thing and waiting a few months.. but he would be so far behind in campaign cash..

I was seriously considering Rudy because of leadership, but his position on abortion just ended any thought I had of voting for the man.

That said, there is no other person I know of I would vote for on the Republican ticket right now. They are all too phony.

Thompson on the other hand.. I just wish he had some sort of executive experience.

On all points. But Fred has executive experience. Haven't you seen In The Line of Fire, Hunt For Red October, etc?

;)

Is the record of presidents with prior "executive experience" so immensely superior that we should be so desirous of it?

I would say that JFK, who had no executive experience was far superior to Jimmy Carter, who did. Even LBJ was better than Carter (LBJ also lacked "executive experience"). W. had executive experience and has still managed to make significant missteps. Bill Clinton had executive experience, and he wasn't so great.

This obsession with the idea that being a Mayor or Governor makes someone better qualified to be President is absurd. Especially since the single most important thing that the President does - directing foreign policy and the military - is something no other executive in either the public or private sector has any experience in.

I don't care if they have "executive experience" - let's talk about who they are and what they stand for and who we think can do the job and stop worrying about their resumes.

I would hold my nose and vote for him in the general, but he just went from #3 on my list to off it.

Signature disclaimer: I'm not currently paid by any campaign, but I am available. Current preferences for President: 1) F.Thompson; 2) Romney; 3) McCain; 4) Gingrich; Guiliani removed 04/03/07

Note to Fred.

Run Fred run....please.

for this electorate. He's certainly head and shoulders above Robert Byrd in class (nevermind in stature) who has every sidewalk, traffic light and bathroom in West Virginia named after him. Gag.

that Fred's running and he's serious about winning.

I don't see any problem with a town naming a road after a famous resident. It doesn't have to mean that person has to rename himself the Robert C. Byrd Politician To Have Something Named After Him.

Maybe I'm just being cynical, but this sure looks like an attempt to get attention with a view toward running. That's not to say there's nothing praiseworthy about his "modesty", but there's nothing unpraiseworthy with accepting the honor, either.

I'm waiting for him to retire from the Senate. They will then the state he was elected from "Byrdland, formerly called West Virginia".

I'd actually support that just for the humor value. Though it might be a bit of overkill, as I think their state nickname is already "The Robert C. Byrd Memorial State"

sorry. I was just agreeing that it looked like Fred would run.

(You recognize his class, peg c, but, IMO, are too pessimistic about the electorate's capacity to do the same. Give intelligence and decency a chance!)

acting career. And I'm not talking about technical matters like voice, presence, timing, etc, important though they are. Like Reagan, I think Thompson has a genuine modesty sbout his personal qualities, arising from his acting career.

Generally, a career in acting (if succesful) goes like this

1 Who's Fred Thompson?

2 Get me Fred Thompson!

3 Get me a Fred Thompson type!

4 Get me a young Fred Thompson!

5 Who's Fred Thompson?

In other words, a strong sense of self, along with humility, is part of being a successful actor. (there is a lot of rejection involved, as well as a rather absurd level of reward). Like Reagan, Thompson is a successful actor of the third rank (not a star, not a charatcter actor, but a convincing embodiment of a quality like strength, integrity, etc). I believe his modesty is genuine, as illustrated by this episode.

A class act indeed.

I think that there is a bill in the State legislature to rename the State, Byrd Virginia.

May as well.

Way to go Fred!
