Namely, Keith Olbermann.

Ever since the Obama passport breach story came out, Olbermann has worked himself into quite the lather asking over and over "what did [the Bush Administration] know, and when did they know it?!?!", so convinced is Olbermann that the breach of the passport files constituted a Rovian plot, the likes of which MSNBC pays Keith good money to rail against (whether or not there is actually any basis in reality to do so).

Doubtless, the fever pitch worked itself into a veritable frenzy when it was revealed that Hillary Clinton's passport files were breached as well. The worst fears and most self-righteous fantasies of Olbermann and his comrades-in-rant were apparently realized. The GOP is out to get the Democrats! Nixon would have been proud!

Except, a monkey wrench has now been thrown into the fantasizing: John McCain's passport files have been breached as well.

Kind of makes it more difficult to believe that this is a project of the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy, doesn't it? I mean, if Republicans are so sinister, so Rovian, as utterly power-mad as Olbermann & Company make us out to be, why would we try to take out our own nominee?

Things that make you go "hmmm," eh? That sound you hear in the background is Olbermann's brain cell (yes, note the singular construction of that word "cell") exploding.

Of course, if Olbermann wanted someone to rail at, perhaps he could have gone after comrade-in-rant Joe Conason. See, Conason thought it wise to call for the release of Barack Obama's passport files. Evidently, it was so important for Conason to find out whether or not Obama traveled to Europe that he essentially advocated the very intrusion into Obama's privacy that Olbermann is spending so much time denouncing.

Look, I know that Florida and Michigan and the prospects of a long and bloody nomination fight have gotten Olbermann and the comrades-in-rant down. But really, there's just no reason for the Reality-Based Community to stop being so reality-based with their commentary.

I mean, they were reality-based to begin with, right?

Right?

Why is no one answering in the affirmative?

Does Keith Olbermann have any idea as to the political culture of the employees at the State Dept?

MSNBC clearly has decided to try and out-left CNN. Also, Olbermann's ratings indicate there is a real market for his schtick.

What I'm wondering is when, if ever, we'll see a channel to the right of Fox News. There's no equivalent of Olbermann on TV for the right.

I don't think it's healthy for the country to have a guy like Olbermann on TV screaming that all Republicans are satanic and evil. But, I have to admit, every time I watch Olbermann (which is rarely) I kinda wish there was an equally angry guy on the right calling all Democrats evil. Olbermann stirs up a very tribal reaction in me.

Is angry demonizing more acceptable on the Left for some reason? I find it stunning that someone like Olbermann is considered a respected journalist ... personally I find the man despicable and loathesome.

Michael Savage! His TV gig was before it's time. He is kind of more of an anarchist than anything though.

A drunk Sean Hannity extreme would probably fill the bill for the anti-Olbermann.

O'Reilly typically beats him 3-1, and usually he's running neck and neck with Nancy Grace.

Yeah, O'Reilly wins total view 3-1, but it's less than 2-1 in the 25-54 demographic.

Olbermann is, by far, the best rated program on MSNBC. And he beats most of CNN. The ratings vary a lot from day to day, but the ratings the other night have Olbermann beating Nancy Grace by more than 2-1, and beating everybody but Cooper on CNN.

Oh, here's the latest ratings. http://www.mediabistro.com/tvnewser/ratings/the_scoreboard_wednesday_mar...

I think the man is a scumbag, but he clearly has found a market niche.

....in the key demo isn't exactly what I would call "good", but it's all relative I guess. MSNBC is the lowest rated cable news network overall, I'm pretty sure.

But you're right about Olbermann finding a demographic. He's tapped into the angry, miserable, depressed leftist demographic. The lefty blogs basically feed directly into his teleprompter.

They really wanted the passport info of a person I'm sure you'll understand that I can't tell you who it is.

To cover it up, though, they knew that they couldn't just look at this person's. So they looked at Obama's, Clinton's, McCain's, and fifteen or sixteen others (this news will trickle out throughout the day and weekend).

As time goes on, people will care less and less and less and assume that a couple of bad folks just wanted to look up the passport info of Washington's rock stars.

That's the cover up.

The big story is the passport info of the person I can't tell you who it is.

This kerfuffle will last as long as the media realizes that Hillary operatives, if any, are implicated. Then it will die.

Bush ordered State to do this on all of the non-conservative candidates, obviously.

Organizations that have many people with access to lots of personal information have to be able to control for access to "sensitive" person data. We have an org in our firm that can pull personal information on anyone as part of credit decisioning, but a processor told me that there are controls preventing them from looking up interesting people (think actors), so they know better.

DoS and/or this contracting firm apparently didn't have robust enough controls (although give them credit that they discovered it at all.) I'm certain this came down to curiosity from folks who had too much power and not enough leash. I say pound the employees, pound Stanley, and pound DoS. But don't politicize it...it just makes you look STUPID in the end.

incident here in the '96 election. One of the unions that then represented correctional officers had them go in and do FBI background checks and criminal history checks on a bunch of Republican officeholders and candidates, which they, of course, published. Since we had a D governor and AG, the CO's got their hands slapped and that was it. It PO'd the Legislature enough that they hired me to work for them with the union's misery as my mission. One of the happier times of my life!

"flap" yet. Yet another example of how people have gone of the deep end, debating narratives. There was a diary on Dkos "linking" Senator Clinton to the searches because she questioned his travel...I mean...aren't we trying to elect a President of the United States? I'll say this for the Republican candidates: when they debated at Reagan Library, they were arguing about their party's ideology (for the most part). Say what you will about the candidates, but between Huckabee, Ron Paul, Romney, and McCain there were represented four different philosophies of conservatism--vapid, backward philosophies, but still. Something.

Narrative v. Narrative we all fall down.

I'm a Leftist, but thought this post was generally great and wanted to comment.

should probably sit under rev wright right next to hussein osama bin barack. There is no bigger idiot on cable tv than the leftist leaning, chavez hugging olberman. He is definitely the most biased and devisive of all cable tv wannabes.
