Tom Tancredo is fired up. He's really fired up. He's impassioned. He says that in the minority he's voting much more regularly with his party leaders in the House.
He also admits he is a second tier candidate.
So why is he still here?

As far as I can tell he's said all the right things about illegal immigration.

Let's nominate the Nash Equilibrium for President.
The price of freedom, . . . courage.
My priorities for casting my vote are 1) Pro-Life, and then 2) Hard core on Illegal Immigration.
Illegal immigration is THE most important issue facing this nation.
This narrows the field substantially. . . . Giuliani, Romney, Huckabee, Thompson, McCain . . . these either have no problem with the current state of illegal immigration affairs, or are somewhat ambiguous on their position.
That leaves Hunter and Tancredo.
You are right on target moijea.

At the May 3, 2007, GOP debate, Rep. Tancredo said the following: "After 40 million dead because we have aborted them in this country, I would say that that would be the greatest day in this country's history when that [Roe v. Wade], in fact, is overturned."

Though the Tancredo haters will never admit it, there is no Republican candidate for president that is more conservative and more pro-life than Rep. Tancredo.
"The defense of our nation begins with the defense of our borders." - Rep. Tom Tancredo
He is the right's equivalent of Mike Gravel, incredibly polarizing and ideologically radical. The fact that he was a war hawk in the '60s, but feigned a medical condition in order to get out of service doesn't give him too much credibility among the military crowd. Also, taking such a hard line stance on illegal immigration can be perceived by some as thinly veiled bigotry.

Why is he still in? Probably because none of the 'first tier' candidates have taken up the issue of illegal immigration seriously. After the applause Tancredo got today maybe they'll reconsider.
