Travis Childers campaign in Mississippi gets its own post-Civil War history wrong.

And here I was thinking that I had a stopping place handy in MS-01.

Note by Jeff: A photo of the ad is also below the fold. Not only does the Childers (D) campaign appear to be conflating Greg Davis and Horn Lake Mayor Nat Baker -- as well as Jeff Davis and N.B. Forrest (according to the article below, which the DCCC is citing as their proof for the ad, Davis was only willing to display the J.D. statue, whereas Baker wanted both), but they didn't have the guts to go public with this in any form other than a pushcard being distributed on the streets of MS-01 one day before today's special election.

Before we go any further; I wouldn't particularly want a statue of Jeff Davis in my hometown. Which is not the same as acquiescing to having one, let alone wanting one of Nathan Bedford Forrest. There's really no excuse for the Childers campaign to get this so drastically wrong, by the way: after all, Davis and Forrest were both Democrats until the day that they died.

Southaven Mayor Greg Davis said Thursday he would be willing to display the Jefferson Davis statue, which is in Downtown Memphis, near City Hall at the end of Northwest Drive.

Horn Lake Mayor Nat Baker also said he would take the statues of Davis and of Confederate Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest “in a heartbeat, even if we’d have to find some privately owned land to put them on.”

Davis said he isn’t “pushing” for the statue of [Jefferson] Davis, despite some news reports saying otherwise.

“All I said was we’d be willing to give the statue a home,” Davis said. “That’s as far as my conversation with Gary Roper went.”

Davis said he hasn’t talked with any public official in Memphis about acquiring the statue.

He also said he doesn’t know what the exact process of obtaining the statue would be.

“I don’t even know if Memphis is even going to move it or not,” Davis said. “We were asked if we could give it a home and we said ‘yes.’ We’re not going to pay for it.

[Photos of the attack ad here and here.]

If I was a betting man, I'd bet that this ad originated out of state. Far out of state. You see, people from Mississippi tend to know something about the American Civil War.

PS: Ticked by this? Greg Davis (MS-01) would no doubt like to hear from you about it.

Update by Jeff:

Nice images - especially given the facts that: (1) they 100% misrepresent the truth of the situation (see note at top of post), and (2) the DCCC folks who distributed the cards were to cowardly to use this message in their $100,000 MS-01 campaign; rather, they had to wait until the afternoon before today's special election to hand them out on the street.

Big surprise here: neither the Childers campaign nor the DCCC have disavowed this race-bating, hate-filled, politics-of-fear message to date.

...to use the race card in this election. Not just here, but for Obama as well. I think they are playing with fire here. People don't like to called racists, and they don't like it when national political parties imply that they may be racists because they might have reservations about voting for Obama for whatever reason. I think the Democrats risk a big backlash over this if they push this stuff.

“.....women and minorities hardest hit”

I think it's great that there is now so much new media, especially on the Internet, that can show this kind of crap (excuse my language) and point out how poisonous it is. In the not too distant past, this would have been a local news story at best.

Let's get this stuff out there, no matter which candidate or party sponsors this garbage. You are right that most folks don't want to be called racists because most aren't. However, those that try to pander to the few that still are should be exposed and vilified just as much as the racists they are still trying to appeal to.

to accuse them of being racist at every turn.

I actually think this is the one tactic that may hurt Obama more than anything. Playing the victim over and over with regards to race is going to turn off voters and it is going to make him look like a wimp-even if it is his surrogates mostly turning him into the victim of racism.

That Nathan Bedford Forest spent the end of his life fighting against the KKK, right? He maintained that it evolved into something he did not envision and that the terrorism and violence was not what he wanted.

I'm jess sayin'.

Be sure and Visit my Home blog Publius' Forum. It's what's happening NOW!

Right now we have the most incompetent House Leadership in modern memory. Let's see if they can pull a win out down there. Whining about what the Democrats do is crybaby stuff. That's what people do after the Dems have beaten them.

Next time, if Childers wins this thing, why don't you people spend time figuring out two things.

1. Running candidates who will talk to people about issues they care about.
2. Figuring out what last minute negative ad WE will use to kick the Democratic Candidate in the yarbles with.

It's always much better to have THEM reacting to us than us reacting to them.

Jesus. This is politics. Contact sport. The Democrats are playing to win.

THAT'S HOW THE ADULTS PLAY THE GAME!!!!

Quit whining about how they lied about our candidate.

That's what they do. THEY ALWAYS LIE!!!! You people are standing around as if someone took your milk money. Well, yeah, it's the Democrats' JOB TO TAKE YOUR MILK MONEY!!!

Quit moaning about the fact that they're passing out hamburgers and figure out how to get campaign teams that have better catering than the Democrats!

I noticed something today. Obama's team made a sleazy, no good Keating Five attack on McCain using surrogates. Meantime, the Gang That Couldn't Shoot Straight over at "Team Maverick" is trying to come up with a response.

One Team plays to Win all the Time, the Other Guys stand around saying that They Wuz Wronged.

Guess who's going to win the Election?

"History will be kind to me, for I intend to write it"-Winston Churchill

Or perhaps "sneering." "Whining" involves things like "it's not fair" and "they shouldn't do that" and "woe is us," not things like "you'd expect them to be not quite this dumb."

Calibrate accordingly. :)
