What Fred said in Nashville today

(still no definite yea/no, but...)

Last week, I thought I'd learned that Fred Thompson was going to announce his Presidential bid on this day (Tuesday, June 26). Erick quickly learned that this was not the case. No major announcement today.

And there wasn't. The story had been that Thompson would visit the Old Fall School Building in Nashville and announce that he was in and this was his national HQ. What actually happened: Fred, carrying a baby, was accosted by a few friendly reporters. He recognized one from "the day," and this fellow asked him of the Old Fall School Building would be his national HQ. Thompson said that it was a good building, they were checking it out, and it would probably be his national HQ should he "decide to go in that direction."

With a hat tip to A.C. Kleinheider of Volunteer Voters in Tennessee, here's the vid:

people handling FT r brillant.

keep him away from scrutiny for as long as possible ... brillant

he avoids Iowa caucus ... probably the Iowa debate and people keep believing he is real

I discovered the other day that some people believe he lives in Tenn

Try finding another message to drone on about. We get it - you don't like Fred Thompson. Maybe someone would care what you think if you'd at least learn to spell and use the shift key.

Or maybe they wouldn't...

What's this about FDT "avoid[ing] the Iowa caucuses"? Is he thinking of McCain and Giuliani telling the world that they'll skip next month's straw poll?

Avoiding scrutiny, Fred's peeps have to know, is not something which can be done. He can join the fisticuffs a little late, but he'll be scrutinized. He's already being scrutinized.

I sense bitterness on his part.

I don't dislike FT. I just believe there is little there there

by announcing the day after amnesty dies.

OR... by PSDA

Fred might just punch his ticket if he announced his candidacy and jumped all over the immigration bill at the height of public outrage over it. I'd have him say that it was precisely why he felt the need to announce earlier than he otherwise intended--that would get tons of press, ingratiate him with the base AND the general public and increase the heat on the amnesty faction. Then, if the bill goes down, he can attempt (with solid justification) to take some credit for it. And even if the bill goes through, what's the downside?

One thing that's going to be very necessary is for the Republican in the general campaign to create distance between himself and Bush. And here's the opportunity on a golden platter. It's an issue which doesn't compromise with the war on terror, and an issue which the Republican base and a solid majority of the all-important independents are behind.

BINGO. I can only hope you're an insider with the campaign and you're giving us a heads up :)

Unfortunately, there's very little to be on the inside of when it comes to Thompson's campaign.

My main worry about him at this point is not the he'll eventually decline to run (seems unlikely) but that he's intoxicated by this notion played up by the media and his circle of advisors that there's no hurry because he's going to run an "unconvential" campaign that relies heavily on new media.

That is a seductive fantasy and (I believe) an illusion. It's the stuff Howard Dean was smoking in 03-04.

Yes, use new media to its maximum advantage, but to bolster instead of substitute for the tried and true science of running a national political campaign.

There is a finite amount of paid and unpaid campaign talent out there, to say nothing of money, that's available for Republican presidential candidates. And it's already starting to get late in the game. The talent and the dollars aren't going to wait at the altar forever.

If that's his national campaign HQ, Fred Thompson has good taste. :-)

You guys may not have noticed it, but did you see the way he was rubbing his little boy's back and head? And when he wanted to get him in out of the sun. He's very naturally a protector. I love good daddies. He's my man.

comment. How many politicians (or actors for that matter) think of their child when they're standing in front of a camera with a friendly reporter?

Socialism doesn't work. It looks nice on paper, but it's been tried and it's failed miserably every time (usually accompanied by widespread death and suffering).
Proud member of the V.R.W.C.

I think I am going to be sick now. Some of you back a PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE because he holds his 1 year old out of the freaking sun?!!!!

I guess all that stuff about executive leadership, cutting taxes, taming the bureaucracy, handling pressure, and destroying the lib media is just irrelevant now.

Since Fred is a good dad and a cool actor- heck- let's just have him NEVER actually campaign until he has to debate Hillary 35 days before the national elections. Brilliant!!

You know we do this just to annoy you :)

It's not the main reason to vote for the guy, but it just shows us a (small) portion of his character. Also, he didn't just let his wife take the baby out of the car and leave her to tend to that family stuff while he went off and talked to reporters.

Character counts.

The actor used his baby as a prop long enough for a photo-op and then let his wife take over.

OK, OK, so he's a good daddy, and that doesn't make him presidential material.

But he's tall, too. Now *that* puts it over the top for me, doesn't it you?
