A Note From the New Guy

Today marks two big changes in my life: I’m starting a new job at The Heritage Foundation as director of the Center for Media & Public Policy and I’ve officially joined RedState as a contributor.
After two years of making great strides at Human Events, I decided the time was right to make a change. Heritage, being at the heart of the conservative movement, is a perfect fit. And RedState, being the premier conservative blog, is an ideal outlet to advance the principles I care about so deeply.
Read on...
As Matt Lewis noted yesterday on Townhall, my job at Heritage will allow me to continue building a conservative coalition of bloggers capable of countering the left.
In an op-ed published today in my alma mater’s newspaper, The Ithacan, I explained the significance of blogging and how it’s intersecting with public policy:
For me, I look at blogging as a way to have an effect on public policy. … That’s what’s great about blogging — no matter what you care about, chances are you can build a coalition to bring about change. And with tools like Technorati, an Internet site that tracks 63.2 million blogs, and Google Blog Search, it’s never been easier to find people with common interests.
Over the next couple of days, keep an eye out for my work. I’ll be posting an interview with Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty and providing live coverage of the House conservative members retreat in Baltimore. Next week in Washington, when the White House unveils its fiscal 2008 budget, I’ll be on location to provide coverage.
Getting your input is vitally important. If you would like to send me a note, please e-mail me at rbluey at gmail dot com.

"And RedState, being the premier conservative blog..."
Youse guys are pretty good, but well, how does one rank the conservative blogs?
I try to hit (in no particular order) Amspec, Malkin, Steyn, NRO Corner, First Things, Coulter, and of course Redstate daily. Each one covers conservatism from differing but important viewpoints.
Praise be to Jesus Christ, now and forever!
The right side of the 'sphere uses a decentralized model that aggregatres information via overlapping themed data sources on an ad-hoc basis. The most important individual blog depends a lot on which data source is most important on you.
We just say things like this because it annoys the Other Side. You see, their ideal structure is one of a primary data nexus which spins off satellite blog networks; their second tier would tend towards specialization, not junior versions of the primary. So it drives them nuts to hear about sites like RedState being called the Republican version of dKos, given that we have about 1/10 to 1/20th of their traffic and probably something like that in linkages*. The fact that we're using a different model either entirely eludes them, or else is discounted because we lost both Houses of Congress last November. Either way, watching them grit their teeth amuses. :)
The Fuzzy Puppy of the VRWC.
*They used to save their ire for Instapundit, which used to be seen as the equivalent. Which is funny, given that Glenn Reynolds is merely a reliable and venerable data source.
provides another conservative viewpoint that is not generally reflected in the excellent list provided by dadofsix.
...like this. :-D
Of course we'd never claim to be the best, and we read the others daily like anybody else. Personally, I'm just glad to be a part of such a great community.

And folks, trust me when I say that he'll be an invaluable asset here at RS.
Tell Steve hello for me (he, of course, has no idea who I am).
Bluey, what's wrong with Free Republic? Do you have a problem with Free Republic?
But RedState is clearly the leader when we're talking about blogs people pay attention to on Capitol Hill.
You did a great job with Right Angle and I'm sure the best is yet to come.
Just remember, a little revolution every now and then is a GOOD thing!
Good luck.

The title "conservative" seems to be open to a lot of interpretations. While I see Redstate as being a site that has definite conservative component to it, it appears to me to be more of a pro-Republican party site than a conservative one. To some it seems that the words "Republican" and "Conservative" are interchangeable. I assure you they aren't. There are many on here that are libertarian for example, rather than conservatives, but still are either Republican or Republican supporters. I read and appreciate Redstate, but calling the site a conservative one begs the question, "as compared to what?" Its relative. Compared to the MSM, the Daileykos., etc., then its conservative...compared to townhall, it falls short in my opinion. There is nothing wrong with being a Republican or pro-Republican site, but we need to remember that there are liberal Republicans and some (not many I agree) conservative Democrats, but there are no liberal conservatives. Republican is Republican.....Conservative is conservative...but they are for fact two different animals that in general tend to like each other.
In any case, I look forward to reading your posts. Good luck at Heritage.

Good luck with the new position, and will be looking forward to your continued contributions.
