Remind me again why Speaker-elect Pelosi decided against Jane Harman for the chairmanship of the House Intelligence Committee. At least Harman knew the issues. Silvestre Reyes? Not so much.

Reyes represents a district that only gave Kerry 56% and he should be targeted for defeat in 2008.

of the airheads that made up the ISG.

...than a crook like Alcee Hastings, I suppose. At least Jane Harman seemed somewhat serious, but she was deposed for showing insufficient rigor when it came to Bush Derangment Syndrome. Besides she looks better than Madame Speaker on TV. Just think the aggressive "oversight" this Intel maven is going to be able to dish out....yessirree...

Maybe he'll be smart enough to keep his mouth shut and let the Ranking Members run Intell.

in some respects. In other ways not so much.

I think the premise to his first question is really arguable but it is strange that someone could be in the position of Mr Reyes and not know some basic things about al Qaeda... like their religion.

On the other hand, I'm not really sure matters greatly what he knows today, his test will be how soon he gets up to speed on intelligence matters, a subject I would note that is much more complex than trivia and trivial questions about Islam. Most of the intelligence requirements in Iraq are fulfilled by theater level assets, something over which the Intelligence Committee will have precious little to say.

On another note, those who have read my commentary over time know I am no fan of State. But unless the morons on the ISG can show how we should have predicted a decade or so ago that we will need a crapload of Arab linguists in the Foreign Service I call BS on their criticism of the embassy.

The linked article doesn't merely point out that Reyes is ignorant. What is disturbing is that from the president on down we have countless elected officials who know (or have known) next to nothing about critical foreign policy issues. After all, Bush became president without (apparently) knowing the diffence between a Shia and a Sunni. However, since most Americans are so profoundly ignorant about foreign affairs, I'm not sure who is going to hold their elected representatives accountable.

affilitation, the questioner, Mr Stein isn't as well versed himslef, as he would like us to believe. While al-Qaeda is made up predominantly of Sunni tribesmen, they are actually mostly Wahabi. The Wahabis broke off from the Sunnis a couple of hundred years ago, because the first two groups are not pure enough in their Islam!

The Wahabis were SO radical, that both Shia and Sunni would kill them on sight. Unfortunately, the Saudi tribe made a pact with the devils, needing them to consolidate their control of what is now Saudi Arabia. In return, they turned over their entire educational system, and subsequently the educational system of Muslims throughout the world, to the Wahabis. THAT is who our real enemy is!
