Fred Thompson: The Small-Government Candidate
He Doesn't Beat Back The Welfare State Without A Plan

This is quite reassuring when it comes to considering the potential candidacy of Fred Thompson. Again, it ought to be noted that Thompson's support of McCain-Feingold is a black mark as far as small-government types are concerned, but one hopes that Thompson will travel the road to Damascus on that issue. As for his stance on other issues, it couldn't be better from the standpoint of most small-government conservatives. If Thompson works to make himself a forceful presence in the contest for Republican primary and caucus votes and if he highlights his small-government record, those who are dissatisfied with Rudy Giuliani, Mitt Romney, John McCain and their stances on various issues of the day will quickly gravitate to Thompson's candidacy.

Fred has addressed McCain-Feingold already, he hasn't proposed a solution, but has recognized that the law has failed:
Many on the right remain angry he supported the campaign finance law sponsored by his friend John McCain. "There are problems with people giving politicians large sums of money and then asking them to pass legislation," Mr. Thompson says. Still, he notes he proposed the amendment to raise the $1,000 per person "hard money" federal contribution limit.
Conceding that McCain-Feingold hasn't worked as intended, and is being riddled with new loopholes, he throws his hands open in exasperation. "I'm not prepared to go there yet, but I wonder if we shouldn't just take off the limits and have full disclosure with harsh penalties for not reporting everything on the Internet immediately."

How many voters will definitely have a problem with the age difference between Fred Thompson and his present wife, Jeri? Fred Thompson will need enough votes to beat Hillary Clinton, and Fred could have a problem getting enough of both the elderly vote and the women's vote just because of the age difference between himself and his wife: Fred is 64 years old while "eye candy" Jeri Kehn Thompson is said to be between 33 to 40 years old.
The old women they could have snaged him and the old men are high fiveing him in spirit.

Fred Thompson is a good man but, despite streaking poll numbers today, unlikely actually to be nominated. The dynamics of this year's campaign disfavor him strongly. Johnthebaptistmoore is righter than he thinks.
Mr. Thompson's incredibly difficult challenge is fully explained here.
surrounded his split from her predecessor, I don't think it is an issue at all these days. Some "church ladies" in small Southern towns might twitter a bit, but it won't cause them to vote for the Hildebeast. Divorce is now so common that even those older folk who look askance at it probably have a kid or two who've been divorced; hard to get too judgemental. And, I know a lot of divorced men, myself among them, and I don't know a one that, if remarried, married a woman his own age, the average being about ten years younger.
In Vino Veritas
I can't express how excited I am that Fred Thompson is finally entering the race. Up until now I saw no choice for President and no hope for what is left of America.
"How many voters will definitely have a problem with the age difference between Fred Thompson and his present wife, Jeri?"
Hey, that's reason enough TO vote for him! lol.
But seriously, I'd vote for the farthest right candidate myself yet Thompson has the "star power" and recognition which really is a legitimate upside.
In a devastating article, Peggy Noonan shows what the President and the administration has done to the conservative coalition. Ms. Noonan (who was a supporter of the President) makes a clear case for why it is now time for conservatives and Republicans to distance themselves from the President and the administration. Namely, because the latter has already done that to the former.

Noonan crystallized the situation in a way I haven't seen before. In my mind, it is a huge moment. I felt that when Robert Bork came out in the Wall Street Journal squarely against the Harriet Miers nomination, that helped turn the tide. Maybe this will be the beginning of the cleansing that is so necessary if conservative ideas and ideals are going to triumph again, as they can.
Will that be an issue? He is only a few years older than Rudy and Mitt, and is younger than McCain, but he is looking a bit grizzled these days. For me, it's all about the issues - but for others, appearance is big. Will this matter?

Don't think image will be an issue...Giuliani is a hunchback....

I wasn't necessarily worried about his appearance - just wanted feedback......
....Anyway, liberal columnist Eric Alterman is worried about the prospects of the Dems facing Fred Thompson in the general election.

Heck if I were them I would be worried if the GOP ran deceased candidates.

The man is more successful as an actor than a politician, much less a leader of the conservative wing of the party. We don't need another actor who will grow government, we need a real conservative with a real record. You can guess who I am supporting.

You don't know Jack Fred!

yet. Your DKos diary is already written, merely waiting for the exact moment of extinction!
I vote we keep you, simply for the comic relief!
Of course, false populism is nothing new to the GOP; Ronald Reagan’s World War II service in Germany, John McCain’s “Straight Talk Express” and Dubya’s carrier landing in his neo-military codpiece are all great examples of the GOP putting image before the truth.

Voted against the farm bill AND voted to means test Medicare?! My heart is fluttering. I'm still a Rudy guy, but I definitely have a 1A now.
