Running Against The Senate's #1 Spender

RedState is pleased to welcome Sheriff Mike Bouchard to the front page.
“Michigan remains the only state other than disaster ridden Louisiana and Mississippi to actually lose jobs in the past few years.”
Quick quiz: Who’s the US Senate’s biggest spender?
Ted Kennedy? Robert Byrd?
The answer may surprise you.
According to Oklahoma Senator Tom Coburn, who keeps a running list of the cost of spending earmarks and who votes for them in his desk on the Senate floor, the Senate’s biggest spender is Michigan’s Debbie Stabenow. As a Michigan taxpayer and former colleague of hers in the Michigan legislature, I’m not the least bit surprised at how careless she’s been with your money.
In Michigan, we’ve been watching her out-of-control spending for years.
Read on . . .
I was appalled watching the Senate debate spending issues in this past year. For instance, in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, even the most obvious pork, the now infamous “Bridge to Nowhere,” was protected by the Senate’s club of big spenders against reformers looking to provide offsets for the unanticipated costs of disaster relief. Just because you have checks in the check book, doesn't mean you have money in the bank. Washington has failed to understand that.
That’s one of the reasons I decided to run against Senator Stabenow this year.
As regular RedState readers are well aware, Senator Coburn’s Federal Funding Accountability and Transparency Act, which would create a “Google like” search engine for federal earmarks, grants, loans, and contracts, is on a fast track to enactment. I have publicly endorsed this common sense measure because it would add more sunlight into Washington’s secret spending process.
One name conspicuously absent from the list of the bill’s Senate supporters was Senator Stabenow’s.
Although you couldn’t find three people on Main Street who wouldn’t support such legislation, it’s not hard to imagine why Stabenow didn’t support the bill given her record on spending. Accountability and transparency have never been her strong suits as a legislator. Rather, Senator Stabenow has excelled as a fundraiser and campaigner thanks in no small part to the huge amounts of taxpayer money, your money, she doles out all around the country.
Controlling spending will be one of my biggest priorities if I’m elected to the Senate because so much else depends on it. For instance, the tax cuts which have been instrumental in restoring our economy can only be sustained if there’s a reasonable level of spending.
Next, getting our financial house in order is not only important from an economic standpoint, but a security standpoint as well. Historian Niall Ferguson has carefully examined the role public finance plays in the ability of nations to sustain their military might. He’s written that our unbalanced national finances could eventually severely hamper our ability to project the force necessary to keep us safe at home.
In the end, I won’t out raise or outspend Senator Stabenow in the campaign, but I will work harder and smarter than she does. I’ve got a great team and a message that is resonating with Michigan’s voters who are tired of watching Congress waste their tax dollars while Michigan remains the only state other than disaster ridden Louisiana and Mississippi to actually lose jobs in the past few years. But I can’t do it alone.
My opponent has run statewide several times while I’m making my first run at statewide office. Please take a moment to visit me at www.mikeformichigan.com and learn more about where I stand on the issues (my highly entertaining commercials alone are worth a visit).
If you agree with me that we need a change in the US Senate, I hope you’ll join me in my quest to restore fiscal sanity to Washington, DC.

Let's make sure that "Sheriff" gets changed to "Senator" in about six weeks!

Sometimes the hardest thing and the right thing are the same. -The Fray, "All At Once"
Deb Stabenow's seat, it will speak miles about the GOP. He's what the party needs. (I'll let the Michiganites speak for themselves, something to which I'm looking forward.)
that post was supposed to be in response to the one above mine if that wasn't clear, i'm not sure what happened earlier today.
this is looking like a promising race (though I don't think it would be surprising for purple Michigan to get a bit skittish and decide to pull a PA Kerry/Specter with DeVos/Stabenow)
hopefully Stabenow will be singing "I fought the law, and the law won" come November!
in Michigan are slim to none. This state is so screwed up that Jennifer Granholm will probably win re-election.
The main problem? Way too many uninformed voters. Seriously, Debbie Stabinaw is running ads about how much she works with republicans in the Senate and has reduced taxes. EXCUSE ME? After reading that Tom Corburn ranks Stabinaw as the biggest spender in Washington....What in the world is Bouchard waiting for?
I suppose Bouchard doesn't have enough money to go up on the air. I will be voting for him, of course, but don't expect him to win. The libs in this state have the public buffaloed and Michigan is a state with a long history of people wanting to be taken care of. Why do you suppose the unions are suffering from the longest death here in Michigan.
Oh by the way, unions are another reason why so many medium and small companies refuse to set up shop here. Our unemplyment rate is currently 7.1% and rising. I can hardly wait to get out of this state. 5 more years until my husband "retires" and we get to depart this godforsaken state.
AMEN!
Let's get some money into Mike's campaign. Let's show him that we're behind him and ready to send "Devious Debbie Do-Nothing" packing and Jennifer back to Canada where they like her liberal ideas.
I am a union member and have been backing Republicans for years. Michiganders need to get informed about these elected officials and how little they do (until election time, then they're "all of a sudden" inspired to do something, anything, just to get TV coverage, even though it's a senseless, useless, non-binding agreement like "DDD" did with Canadian garbage. Where has she been the last six years anyway? The only time I've ever seen her was standing next to HRC at the State of the Union address. Do we need/want someone who associates with HRC? God, NO!!! It's time to get some life back into Michigan. Why is Michigan the only state in a recession? Not because of President Bush. He has done his part to cut taxes to get the economy moving. No matter what JG and DDD say, it all comes down to them and we can include the Levins in there too. Two more worthless sucking it up liberals. If any of you are really serious, volunteer, contribute, talk it up, Let's get rid of these two before there is nothing left of Michigan.
LIFE: The Choice of the Next Generation!
Michiganders, if you want to get rid of Jenny and Debbie, then get yourself to your nearest Victory Center and VOLUNTEER!!!

Sheriff,
In the Senate, would you be an advocate for reforming the components of so-called mandatory spending, which accounts for about two thirds of spending growth over the last 15 years?
Controlling costs in Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid would go a long way.
