The Arrogance of Trent Lott

Trent Lott's famous quote attacking the Porkbusters is still prominently displayed on the top of the anti-pork website. When the Mississippi senator quipped that he was "damn tired of hearing from them," little did he know he would inspire a movement that has had a tremendous impact on government transparency and reducing waste. (If you don't believe me, just look at what House Republicans were able to accomplish this week on those two themes.)
Now Lott is at it again, only this time he's tired of hearing from the American people on the immigration bill. (Hat tip to Hugh Hewitt.) It seems Lott would prefer to govern from his ivory tower without ever having to hear a peep from the people who sent him to Washington. Talk about an elitist attitude.
Lott is quoted in today's Washington Post as saying, "I'm sure senators on both sides of the aisle are being pounded by these talk-radio people who don't even know what's in the bill." And he offered this gem to the New York Times: "Talk radio is running America. We have to deal with that problem."
So, let me get this straight, Trent Lott thinks that 1) radio talk-show hosts are ignorant, and 2) they're a "problem" he wants fixed. I'd say Lott just put his foot in his mouth again.

...but, from what I've seen, it looks like the radio people actually are more knowledgeable about it than the people voting on it. Many of them have actually read it, or have gotten in-depth analysis from somebody who has... which is more than we can see from the people advancing it.

hosts have read the legislation than the lightweights who disgrace the Senate these days. As a matter of fact, I hope they and we as citizens do a lot of "gotchas" and ask our reps and senators about specific provisions, by title and chapter, so their blank faces can be captured on film and on air and in public.
As I posted here, the good news is that serious senators are speaking up. Fortunately, not all Republican senators are as elitist as Sen. Lott.
The other bit of good news is that the Washington Times is reporting that chances of the bill winning passage in the House aren't good.
Rush alone gets over 20 million listeners a week. If we the people didn't like what he said, we wouldn't listen.
No Mr. Lott it's not talk radio that runs America, it's THE PEOPLE - you know, people who ELECT you. What's he going to attack next - the internet? Maybe China can tutor him on how to control a population.

Even a California Senator doesn't get the backing of 20 million people on Election Day, let alone five days a week for three hours... not to mention, considering the job approval ratings for Congress, I think they only wish they could have that number of devoted consumers of their insipid, inane, incorrigible invective (and I'll stop with the alliteration now... but you have to admit; that was a good one).

He can always resign and go home. I wouldnt be mad.
I can only think that Lott has become embittered by his 'abandonment' by republicans during the fallout from his Thurmond speech a few years ago. It certainly appears to me that he has been carrying a grudge since then, and sees this as a perfect opportunity to hose the conservatives who he feels 'ruined' his career. Such is the midset of an elite.
My friends in Mississippi, ball's in your court. 38 years in DC has been long enough to forget about whom he represents.
Congress should be required to pass a test created by a watchdog group on the content of every bill before they vote on it.

When the GOP caucus picked Sen Lott, they set themselves up for another tough day at the polls in Nov. 08.
We've seen enough from this buffoon.
It's time for him to go.
He can jump. Or we can push him.
Either was, I don't care. Lott just needs to go.

However, his protege Sen. Thad Cochran must run in '08. It might be nice for Mississippi voters to remind their senator that they understand what a vote for cloture means.
Trent Lott seems to want to follow what the Nazis did in stopping dissenting political opinion by by controlling the media so that counternews was not available to the public. He wants his propaganda heard and nothing else.

on the Fairness Doctrine bandwagon.
I can't say I'm surprised.
