'There's Nothing Fair About the Fairness Doctrine'

Senators Dick Durbin (Ill.) and John Kerry (Mass.) are the latest Democrats to call for reinstatement of the Fairness Doctrine, but they'll face a tough fight from conservatives if they're serious about bringing back this disastrous policy.

Rep. Mike Pence (R.-Ind.) is leading the charge. Today the former radio-show host introduced the Broadcaster Freedom Act, legislation that would effectively prohibit the FCC from imposing the Fairness Doctrine on broadcasters. Pence credited Rep. Tom Price (R.-Ga.) for coming up with the name "Freedom Doctrine." During a conference call with bloggers this morning, Pence said bluntly, "There's nothing fair about the Fairness Doctrine." (Michelle Malkin has more and Amanda Carpenter reports on the latest at Townhall.)

To cover all bases, Pence has also teamed with Republican Study Committee Chairman Jeb Hensarling (R.-Tex.) and Rep. Jeff Flake (R.-Ariz.) to offer an amendment to the financial services appropriations bill to cut off funds from being used to enact the Fairness Doctrine for fiscal 2008.

While Pence is clearly ready to fight Democrat attempts to reinstate the Fairness Doctrine, he's well aware of the tough ask ahead. Even some Republicans have turned against talk radio in recent weeks, threatening GOP unity on this issue. Personally, I still believe that Democrats would have a hard time pulling this off given the market forces at work. Then again, anything is possible in Washington.

For those who want it "fairness" is not a factor. Republicans oppose it because it exposed their canard regarding the immigration bill and besides TR keeps them on their toes. Democrats want it because they can't compete with TR and the only hope they have is in silencing or at least limiting what TR can do.

The libs desire to put this fairness doctrine in place is clear evidence that they know that they can not compete with us in the marketplace of ideas.

As long as we are hearing libs clamor for the fairness doctrine we can take some comfort that deep down even they know that their ideas lose to ours if the American public is given the opportunity to decide.

and Hollywood. They're going for a complete shut-out. Well, only when they pry my radio's knobs from my cold dead fingers!

It has come to the point where we (conservatives) had better get in the game to win. Actions speak louder than words and we simply must engage these libs headon with everything we have so that this snowball doesn't even begin a downhill run.

Of course, that's after we stuff this immigration bill where it belongs!

I wonder if the libs realize that their boldness after winning the last election cycle is actually going to cost them votes in '08? Prior to the elections they remained more behind the scenes and kept the lunatics quiet. But now, emboldened with their win, their far left ideas are being thrust into the light of day. I firmly believe that many who voted for the Dems the last time around will quietly pull the Rep. lever this time, especially if FDT (my man!) runs. This early and long POTUS campaign will give the libs more time to show who they really are and where they want this country to go. In trying to one-up each other, they will successfully drive those in the middle back home.

It is not about fairness. It is about direct governemnt control of free speech and private business. In America.
The streets and phone lines to our governing class should be full of protests. the newspapers, if they even cared a bit any longer about freedom and rule of law, would put the names of any government employee or elected office holder who dared to even mention this pile of poop.
The (at best) silence of the MSM is disgusting regarding this topic.
Those tools in the MSM think that somehow they will be immune to eventaul censorship down the road. this is so much like what is happening in Venezuela and what happened in Germany as to make me livid.

...as if government control of something would give a leftist pause. The entire POINT of them bringing up the Fairness Doctrine is to gain furthered control, and, in their eyes, win by default.

The new Democrat Party motto: No objection, no freedom, no conscience, no problems...

"The world is filled with violence. Because criminals carry guns, we decent, law-abiding citizens should also have guns. Otherwise they will win and the decent people will lose." - James Earl Jones

Republicans....Democrats...reimplementing the Fairness Doctrine? With the plethora of political opinion available from a myriad of communications venues, this is clearly an example of the fascist behavior of the social liberals within both parties to silence legitimate dissent or debate when directly challenged. Nothing more, nothing less.
