War for Christmas

Or, what was in YOUR stocking this year?

While we all try to enjoy family and friends and peace and joy here at home on this Christmas day, the Horn of Africa has exploded in a much anticipated but vehemently denied War declared by Ethiopia against Somalian Union of Islamic courts . As suggested by the Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi,

“Our defence forces have launched a counter-offensive, which is completely legal and proportional, on these anti-peace forces [Union of Islamic Courts (UIC)],” Mr Zenawi said, arguing that his country was forced to go to war to defend its sovereignty against what he described as terrorists and anti-Ethiopian elements.

We have grown accustomed over the course of the Iraq war to forget about (or pretend to deny) the surging radical Islamism in places like Eritrea and Darfur and Somalia. Our friends in the media have been quite adept at keeping the accounts of atrocities there all together quiet, or at least in as much of a whisper as possible.

We never heard much about the Nuns shot dead on the streets, or the Somalis pulled from a porn movie theater and killed for violating the Qu'aran, nor did we get much detail about the takeover of Baidoa by the ICU a few months back in stark violation of peace accords penned between the "recognized" government of Somalia and the Islamic thugs taking over the country under the watchful eyes of the so-called United Nations.

We have been given little coverage of the US Military presence in Djibouti under Central Command jurisdiction and the many selfless sacrifices and generosity we have bestowed upon the people there. A look at CentCom's Horn of Africa website could serve to encourage many Americans that we understand there is a need for stability and generosity in the poor and underprivileged areas of the world, yet little is mentioned about such noble ventures on the part of the US Military.

And so it comes that a war begins between Ethiopia, rightly feeling threatened by the ICU's encroachment on the people of Ethiopia and her Somali neighbors to the south. And so the tit for tat begins, with bombs flying on Somali targets, and radical Islamists beginning the victimhood du jour for the world to see and pine over when the Security council gets around to condemning Ethiopia while simultaneously striving to protect the poor, underprivileged Somalis (under the iron grip of the Ismalists) just trying to put together a life for themselves and their families.
