Racist Democrats enforce segregation of their own party

Is it time to start bussing Congressmen to enforce desegregation on Capitol Hill?

The Politico's headline says it all: "Freshman Rep. Stephen I. Cohen, D-Tenn., is not joining the Congressional Black Caucus after several current and former members made it clear that a white lawmaker was not welcome."

Cohen isn't black. However, the Congressman he replaced - Harold "I like sports and I like girls" Ford - is, and his district, in Memphis, is 60% black, and his staff is majority African-American. That clearly just isn't good enough - even though, as a Democrat, Cohen likely has no intention whatsoever of rocking the CBC's boat; he appears simply to be trying to represent his constituency in the best way that he can.

The caucus does not have an "official" racial prerequisite for membership; however, no white Member has ever been able to join - even if an overwhelming percentage of their constituency is black.

It doesn't look like that's going to change any time soon, either. Rep. William Lacy Clay Sr. (D-Mo) responded to Cohen's attempt to join by authoring and circulating a memo which emphasized how "critical" it was "that the group remain exclusively African- American."

Clay's son, also a Democrat Congressman from Missouri, reinforced that opinion, saying: "It's an unwritten rule. It's understood. It's clear."

"Half my Democratic constituents were African-American. I felt we had interests in common as far as helping people in poverty," said Rep. Pete Stark (D-CA), who attempted to join the caucus in 1975. "They had a vote, and I lost. They said the issue was that I was white, and they felt it was important that the group be limited to African-Americans."

"I think they're real happy I'm not going to join," said Cohen, after finally backing out of his bid to do so. "It's their caucus and they do things their way. You don't force your way in. You need to be invited."

And the Congressional Black Caucus has made it very clear who is not invited, either now or ever: White people.

Way to work toward that "colorblind society," folks.

"hypocrisy"?

There, I thought you could.

I guess this is all part of the new transparent Congress.

These guys don't even pretend to support the ideals of MLK's Dream speech. Since King died, the whole 'civil rights' establishment has been hijacked into racism.

Many Democrats, and the CBC members in particular, routinely advocate and support 'race'-based collectivism and determinism.

If anyone should be unhappy about this, it ought to be the 'labor leaders.' Divisions based on 'race' and 'class' are not compatible. Lefties let the CBC do this, and then wonder why unionism is dying in America...

Run like Reagan!

It's not a caucus for the interests of black voters, but rather black (liberal, Democrat) politicians. What more needs be said?

Lets beat them at their own game.

Congressman Watts was also told he coulnd't be a part of the CBC. Their losses, IMO.

Don't mess with Texas.

Has anyone heard from him recently? A couple of years ago he was out fund raising and spreading the word of conservatism, but I haven't heard from him lately. Any news of an exploratory committee? I think he'd make a FAR better "First Black President" than Barrak Obama. I was a bit disappointed when Bush picked Cheney over him for VP (not that there's anythng wrong with Cheney, he's one of the most capable VP's in history).

Socialism doesn't work. It looks nice on paper, but it's been tried and it's failed miserably every time (usually accompanied by widespread death and suffering).
Proud member of the V.R.W.C.

I've heard him on Sean Hannity a few times before the election and he was barely stringing a few sentences together - a far cry from spreading the word of conservatism. I am not sure what happened to him.

The Ford family tried like hell to keep Cohen from winning that seat, even firing off Harold's brother to run as an "I" agains now Rep. Cohen. I can imagine Cohen is not the most popular guy with the CBC, even forgetting his race.

call it what it is Racism plain and simple.

If someone had the temerity to try set up a Congressional White Caucus the clowns in the CBC would be the first in front of the camera and would never, ever see the hypocrisy.

The last time I was involved in the forced bussing fiasco, I was an 11 year old doing the frontline heavy lifting for the liberal's lofty ideas.

While I agree that the CBC should have let in conservative african-american congressmen, I don't see how they should let in a white guy. That would be like letting Ted Kennedy in a "conservative" club.

To loosely quote Ron Burgundy, "They don't make sense."

Segregation Tomorrow, Segregation Forever."

And people try to say George Wallace would not be at home in the modern Democratic party.

We're dealing with semantics here, of what a "black" caucus is. Is it a group of black congressmen, or a group of congressmen representing interests of black constituents? If they want it to be the latter, that's their business. With all the real corruption and racism and hypocrisy and shameless opportunism in the Democratic party, I think this is a rather trivial tangent to get caught up in.

The existence of something like a "Black Caucus" looks like a sterling example of racism and hypocrisy.

If they want it to be [a group of congressmen representing interests of black constituents] that's their business.

Unless you think it would be fine to establish a Congressional White Caucus, aimed at representing the the interests of white constituents, I don't think you can make this argument.

As is often the case where something bad is happening, we have the Supreme Court to blame for this mess. It is their interpetation of the law which results in packing black Americans into their own seperate congressional districts.
