Just Enforce Existing Laws

We have ALL gotten bundled up in angry exchanges over the immigration reform debate. Some have articulated their cases poorly, others have used shrill and false accusations as a means of self-defense. But whatever lies ahead for our immigration problems and whether/how they'll be solved, no one can faithfully argue that laws currently on the books shouldn't be enforced while we wait for them to be changed...immigration law or any OTHER laws for that matter. So how is it that something like THIS can happen in this day and age?:

A U.S. Customs and Border Patrol agent was killed Saturday when he was struck by a car driven by a suspected narcotics smuggler, officials said.

Luis Aguilar, 32, who was assigned to the Yuma, Arizona, border patrol station, died Saturday, U.S. Customs and Border Patrol Commissioner W. Ralph Basham said in a statement.
[...]
Aguilar was trying to place spike strips in the path of two vehicles believed to have illegally entered the country from Mexico when one of the vehicles hit him, agent Michael Bernacke, a spokesman for the agency's Yuma sector, told The Associated Press.

Both vehicles drove back across the border into Mexico, the AP said.

The fatal incident occurred in the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area near Andrade, California, Basham said. Andrade is just over the California state line from Arizona.

The area is popular with off-road vehicle enthusiasts but also is frequently used by smugglers carrying people or drugs, the AP said.

I just can't help wondering why our Political heroes don't see that a border fence they have already approved should have long ago been financed and built. These are simple matters...they don't require years of researching, hundreds of polls, and dozens of election cycles to figure out.

More below the fold...

There is an inherent value and benefit in making people actually have to WORK at coming and going between America and Mexico. And, now? A man is dead, leaving behind a wife and 2 children, solely because Washington fears negative backlash from people who DO NOT COME HERE LEGALLY or abide by our laws when they GET here.

Add to that the countless stories more well-known, such as Ramos and Compean [item 2, partway down] that go under reported and/or misrepresented, and there's little wonder why nothing is getting done...and Agents keep dying, or going to jail, and more illegals enter the country. This is just ridiculous, and does not hold any signs of hope for improvement any time soon.

According to The American Conservative Union's coverage of the Aguilar murder (and that's really what this is):

If our elected officials had actually allowed the construction of that fence... if they were really serious about securing the border, there would be no way to tell if it would have made a difference in the specific case of Aguilar.

But make no mistake, our elected leaders' lack of resolve when it comes to securing the border sends an unmistakable message to illegal aliens and drug smugglers.

Until our elected leaders get serious, law enforcement agents and innocent Americans WILL DIE NEEDLESSLY!

How many of our law enforcement agents will have to die or be falsely accused of crimes before our elected leaders get the message?

How many indeed...

Are you saying that because Mr.Aguilar, a Federal Employee, has a Spanish surname, he should have been arrested? What a vile and racist comment!

I think he is referring to the fact that two other border guards are serving prison terms for wounding an illegal drug smuggler.

Thanks for the clarification.

I agree.

Rule of law is essential in a free society (The Road to Serfdom). Having enforcable laws that result from consensus among differing groups is the challenge of our democracy. That is why we should not crucify consensus builders on the cross of dogma.

Seasonal workers who are needed here should be given a middle path between illegality and citizenship. They are not all drug dealers and gang members. The wheat should be separated from the chaff.

But now I'm in a foul mood.

And the Lord upon the Golden Horn is laughing in the sun.

"I am outraged by this tragic loss," said Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said Saturday. "I have spoken to the Mexican ambassador, who gives me both his condolences and deep assurance that their government will be resolute in tracking down the perpetrators and bringing them to swift justice."

Federal, state and local authorities are working with Mexican police and military authorities to apprehend the suspected killers, he said

To which I replied in the general direction of my coffee cup...

pfffft...yeah, right.

Congress and President Bush act like they can't do anything to fight against illegal immigration until a new bill gets passed. The truth is that if they would enforce the laws that are already on the books a good portion of illegal immigration could be stopped.

If President Bush really wanted the fence built it would already be done. If he really wanted our borders enforced he would order additional enforcement officers to the border. He would penalize sanctuary cities by withholding federal funds.

Enforcement is a function of the executive branch. The laws are there. Enforce them.

We need an uprising from the base similar to the Harriet Miers and McCain/Kennedy uprisings. President Bush needs to hear how displeased we are with his inaction on this serious issue.

agree with Paul...these stories just tick me off to no end

" Got to love the Lord for making things like that."
Morally Compromised

Don't expect any enforcement in 2008 - the current compassionate conservative government is busy cementing relationships with business on both sides of the border.

While Arizona, in spite of one of their senators is trying, Texas with the help of Senator Hutchison and Govenor Perry are working around the clock to ensure open borders.

It's very simple, as you said. Enforce the laws. When exactly did laws stop having meaning? And now we're supposed to provide amnesty because it's so inhumane and burdensome to actually enforce the law?

I-L-L-E-G-A-L

I feel like I'm stuck in a bad Twilight Zone episode when it comes to the current fiasco surrounding illegal immigration.
