Holy Lord, They Are Unhinged.

They've lost enough hinges to put shutters on every window on the Sears tower. Via Ace comes a HuffPo piece that is almost impossible to believe was actually written. Read it at Ace's place in case they deleted it after the fact.
If I somehow knew an attack [like 9/11] was coming, I wouldn't pause for a second to report it in order to prevent it from occuring. But on the other hand, I remind myself that without the ultimate sacrifice paid by 400,000 U.S. soldiers in World War II, tyranny could well have an iron grip on the world, and even on this nation.
If the Nazis had prevailed, tens, if not hundreds of millions more would have been killed.
That realization has led my brain to launch a political calculus 180 degrees removed from my pacifist-inclined leanings. An entirely hypothetical yet realpolitik calculus that is ugly, and cold-hearted but must be posited:
What if another terror attack just before this fall's elections could save many thousand-times the lives lost?
Read on...
2,973 people died in the attacks on 9/11. Folks, you heard it from the Reality Based Community first-- if Republicans win at the ballot box this November, many thousand times more than that could be killed. My math is rusty, but carry the five, um, that would be over 5 million people. All if you do not elect Bob Casey, Jr., Tester, Whitehouse, and Brown to the Senate, and enough Representatives to make Pelosi speaker and Conyers head of the Judiciary committee!
Folks, they really do think like this. The smarter, more rational ones warn the others to keep things to themselves, but they cannot hide their real feelings.
But in light of the very real potential of the next two American elections to solidify our growing American persona as a warlike, polluter-friendly nation with repressive domestic tendencies and inadequate health care for so many tens of millions, let me ask you this. Even if only from the standpoint of a purely intellectual exercise in alternative future history:
If you knew us getting hit again would launch a chain of transformative, cascading events that would enable a better nation where millions who would have died will live longer, would such a calculus have any moral validity?
Any at all?
Mr. Shaw, I am glad you asked that question. Please continue to, as often and as vocally as you possibly can.

addled premises.
Let's remove their bloodsport from the equation and examine only the results. Would a terror strike of that sort guarantee Democrat victories in the next two elections? That's a counterintuitive bit of whimsy.
Would the Democrats fix the nation to the satisfaction of the unhinged nutroots? No way. They've already excommunicated half the party from their play-at-religion, and more would follow. If the party walked their lock step, it would turn off at least 80% of the nation, those without the bitter dementia.
Let's hope these folks remain harmless.
I get the feeling this guy is hoping for a Madrid 3/1/04- type result. What's sick is that these clowns seem to have a set of memes and talking points ready to go should something happen in late October. Remember their shrieking after every little thing in October 2004, like the flu shot scare, Assam the American's appearance on al-Jazeera, UBL's endorsement of Kerry and the bogus alQaqaa story?
It can be just as easily said tha another massive attack would both anger and mobilize the American people, and what would defeat fetish democrats have left to say. If those London airline bombings had occured there would have been more than just a whiff of revenge in the American air.
But what's a couple of thousand lives if you get to raise the minimum wage.

Sounds like the solution is to nuke the 300M of us in the US so that the other 6.2B people in the world can live in peace and harmony.
All of us Americans, at least the heterosexual, white, Christian males, must die, because we represent all that is evil in the world. Once we are irradicated, billions of people will be safe from us. All the wonderful, peace loving, good people like Hugo Chavez, Kimg Jong Ill, the Ayatollahs of Iran, and Natalie from the Dixie Chicks can get back to making the world a better place without all of our meddling.
And maybe, just maybe, Alec Baldwin can return to the country that he left after Bush got elected.
Michael Moore's lament that 9/11 didn't happen in a Red State.
This is reason 7,443,213,094,890,892 why we cannot sit out and let these guys win. But I may be off by a few numbers.
...seems to be missing from Shaw's "intellectual exercise." Hey Russ, why don't you enlighten us as to your favorite party's response to your hypothetical terrorist attack once they get elected. I mean, once the reality of a couple hundred-thousand dead Americans sinks in post-election, then what? Do you think the public might actually want your party to do something like, I don't know, kick someone's ass?
Gee, that would present a real problem, wouldn't it? Considering that idiots like you think a proper response would be an emergency declaration making Islam the state religion of the USA, do you really think Americans will accept that? Or is it more likely that they might just demand a "disproportionate response?" The real "Reality-Based Community" would probably opt for the latter, don't you think?
Then again; for a guy who enjoys intellectual exercises, you don't seem to think too deeply, Russ. Pardon my intruding upon your lovely dream, but using your own world-view as a guide, wouldn't the result actually be that Bushitler would simply cancel the election--after which you and the Huffpo crowd would get carted off to a "holiday camp" in the Nevada desert?
Of course, no such thing would happen, so you're probably safe. Thankfully, your world-view is wrong. It bears no resemblance to reality. It has no relationship with common-sense.
Russ, you and the rest of your idiot crowd are in truth the masters of the self-refuting argument. If this country was what you say it is, you couldn't say it.
WE deserve to be murdered. We deserve to have the climate swallow us up. We deserve to be terrorized. We deserve to be destroyed. No wonder liberals often share so many talking points with islamofascists. There is a great deal they share in common.
They all say how much they love the country. But they hate the people, the political system, our history, our culture, our economic system, our laws, and our elected leaders. But other than that they love the country!

which translates into "Our troops are bunch of terrorist invaders. You know, that Genghis Khan mentality. We hate everything they do, except for the rare instance where they shag their own officers. They need to be brought home so we can disband the military. But don't you dare say we are unpatriotic and don't support our troops."

on the Huffpo site are overwhelmingly negative of the article.
I find his premise particularly offensive since I believe that the next attack will be stopped by the alert individual who happens to be there at the time and notice that something smokey is going on. While our goverment is doing what they can, we are all ultimately relying on the vigilance of the ordinary citizen. Someone saw the unattended bag on the Madrid trains and did nothing; I hope and believe that Americans will do better.
In their hearts they know he's right, to borrow from a better campaign. I'll grant that some feel it's going overboard but I wouldn't hazard a guess as to how many.
It's a strain or thread running thru positions and comments starting about October '01. For appearances sake disclaimers are issued, perfunctory, but oh, to see this racist society of ours, this home of bible thumping Christian theocrats run by republican gangsters and led by McChimp, get what it has brought down on itself [remember, we are causing additional terrorism and terror recruits], what satisfaction.
The blow would be softened by the implementation of the pillars of progressisvism and who wouldn't let a neighbor die for nationalized medicine, minimum wage increases, enviro regs that will place you in a pedal push car, and the full panoply of citizen subjection and State domination.

Think of how many times our friends on the left told us that they supported the troops; they just opposed the war and President Bush's policies.
Well, supporting the troops means, among other things, not wanting them to get killed! The conundrum for our leftist friends was that if none of the troops were getting killed, it would have meant that our policies were succeeding spectacularly -- and President Bush would be enormously popular and the Republicans would be a lock in the 2006 elections. Whether they said it or not, whether they even realized it, the loyal opposition wanted and needed for our troops to fail, for a lot of our soldiers and Marines to get killed; that is what they require for political victory.
I can assure the Left that, if every day until election 2008, a few thousand of them would sacrifice themselves by self immolation, this country would awaken to their rational progressive arguments and the rest of us would be saved. (Hey buddy, got a match?)
Envisioning when all that is Left is the Right.
We all must die.

Perhaps that's unfair, but what the hey?
As far as I'm concerned, this is a lefty speaking. And, in my mind (and, I suspect in the mind of the typical voter), lefty = Democrat. Sounds good to me.
Let the Democrats make the case that this isn't one of their kindred spirits. Let them do the heavy work of disassociating themselves from this guy's comments.
This guy's image could turn out to be heavy. Just like Michael Moore's.
In my mind, silence = consent. If the Dems won't disassociate themselves from this fellow and his words, then he's one of them. As far as we all should be concerned, that is.

Historically, terrorist attacks on U.S. soil are attributable to the failure of Democrat policies and leadership. Unfortunately for him, he will have to wait until AFTER Democrats assume control for the next attack. It will save many lives - terrorist lives - since if Democrats are in charge we will most likely not respond at all.
Aspirin factories will be in grave danger, however.
You’ll remember the periodic assertions that FDR knew of the Pearl Harbor attack in advance, but did not act to prevent it because he needed a slam dunk case for the US to enter WW II?
(Actually, the best I can distill from my reading of that history is that it was probably an earlier example of failing to “connect the dots.”)
Unfortunately, too many of our fellow citizens have a short attention span and our burning collective post-9/11 motivation is only smoldering today. Anything that reminds Americans that the danger posed by the Jihadi is real, and that they simply will not be placated, works against Dems and for Republicans. The more vivid the reminder, the more impactful the political consequences will be.
Pure logic suggests that the longer America, and especially the American homeland, goes without a large-scale Jihadi attack, the more political credit should accrue to the administration in power. So, it’s sobering to me see how little “pure logic” matters in current American politics.
Now if GWB were President of Vulcan, that’s an entirely different story.

This guy is a bigger idiot than Pat Robertson, but neither one represents anyone other than themselves.

You have to ask whether he would volunteer to be a victim in his little realpolitik calculas.
I have said this before but tolerance, openess and a desire to severybody get a fair shake are not the hallmarks of liberalism. Liberals put these forward to mask the one true defining element of their philosophy cowardice. They don't care who gets thrown under the bus. If its not them and they don't have to watch its fine.
