I'm happy for the kids over on the left...no REALLY I am. They seem to be swooning for a Presidential hopeful, and that's really kewl...good for them.
What kills me is that this phenomenon seems to be because Barack Obama is 'purty', or because he talks real nice, or maybe it's because he makes you 'feel good' when you listen to him running his head about things he hasn't been around politics long enough to fully appreciate...or grasp.
Full stop.
Does his fan club (err, I mean, his supporters) even have an inkling of what he's going to actually DO TO THEM if he makes the White House? It's one thing to croon over John, Paul, George, and Ringo but are we REALLY down to smooth talkers and GQ magazine covers for President? Apparently yes, according to this at least:
You can see it in their flushed-face smiles and hear it in their screams. They say the phenomenon is difficult to describe, but once they experience it they tell their friends, sisters, mothers and daughters, and they come back for more if they can.
"He's very charismatic. It was a 'you-had-to-be-there' kind of experience," said Lolita Breckenridge, 37, after hearing Democratic White House hopeful Barack Obama address a packed rally at the University of Maryland on Monday.
A dedicated supporter, she brought two of her friends to hear the Illinois senator deliver one of his much-talked-about speeches.
"Not too much of the speech was new to me," she admitted. "But hearing him live..." she trailed off, shaking her head and grinning.
When Obama addressed the crowd of 16 000 on the eve of primaries which he is tipped to win in Maryland, Virginia and Washington, DC, he carried himself with his habitual worldly confidence, interspersed talk of foreign policy with recollections of his childhood and even poked political fun at his Republican adversaries.
He did not flinch when women screamed as he was in mid-sentence, and even broke off once to answer a female's cry of "I love you Obama!" with a reassuring: "I love you back."
Yeah, he loves us BACK alright...he's gonna love us back a WHOLE bunch if he pulls this charade off...
>More below the fold...
He's gonna love us out of all our money so he can give to everyone else. He's gonna love us right out of any HOPE for being able to stand up against Islamic terrorism on foreign soil (waiting until they kill us right here at home and calling the local Police to attend to the mess and the details) And, he's gonna love us right into the poor house while he gives everyone the American dream no matter how hard they've worked at not working for it.
The whole thing is cute and all, but do we really need to seal the deal we've made with Movie stars, and Rock (and Rap) stars by legitimizing this nonsensical "National Enquirer mentality" in the forum of American Politics and Governance?
With Obama surging after a series of key wins last week, supporters eager for a chance to see him in the flesh braved freezing temperatures and filed politely into a near interminable line that stretched all the way across campus.
Ahead of Obama's speech, hip-hop music blared across the sports arena and fans held up signs that read "Barack My World" and "Party Like a Barack Star". Afterward, supporters were eager to talk about the experience.
For Karen Ruffin, 42, hearing him speak of his hope for the country was "inspiring, full of hope and phenomenal".
And, while he's feeling all the love, he's keeping the dirty little secret from everyone about just HOW exactly he's going to actually PAY for all this inspiration and hope.
With THEIR money.
Man, this is getting good-I wonder when they'll get that hangover...and get the bill to pay for the booze he SAID he was giving them.
Apparently Liberals actually ENJOY giving away their money and hoping to get a little of it back...meantime, they'll just swoon and croon and rush the stage like a teenager at a Beatles concert.

...for us to retain the Oval Office, for at least 4 more years. Only time will tell, I ain't counting the "Hill" out yet.
A government big enough to give you everything you want is strong enough to take everything you have. Thomas Jefferson
Most Americans don't know what he stands for. Sure, the base will love him, but will the swing voters really go for a guy who wants defeat in Iraq, is willing to let newborn babies die if their mothers don't want them, will run the economy into the ground with his Robin Hood tax scheme, and refuses to wear an American flag pin?
If so, this country is in more trouble than I thought.

"If we want to take this party back, and I think we can someday, let’s get to work." – Barry Goldwater
The problem is, the media has already made it quite clear.
Anyone who criticizes Obama, or Obama's track record, or his policy agenda is a Racist.
Good conservatives are going to be called Klan members, because they dare question Prince Obama.
It is either going to be an ugly 8 months, or worse it is going to be a Republican party so afraid to stand up to the media and the false racism claims that they basically hand him the election
Ya, because I remember you guys being so upset over the dumbing down of politics when George "My fake drawl makes me seem like a guy you'd like to have a beer with." Bush was beating Al "Hah, he invented the internet!" Gore and John "Hah, he voted for it before he voted against it!" Kerry.
Cults of personality aren't exclusive to liberals. Rush has his "dittoheads", all the Republican nominees spent the last 18 months genuflecting at the alter of "Saint Reagan", Thompson supposedly had the female vote locked up because he was so sexy and his ex-wives still loved him.
Can Obama completely change the way that politics works? Probably not. But he certainly could get rid of liberalism's tarnish and get it back into the mainstream, just like Reagan did for conservatism. And, duh, that's something for liberals to get pretty excited about.
Anyway, you guys have a horribly unpopular sitting President and a Presidential nominee that can't even excite his own party. So it's not like your advice/critique is going to carry a lot of weight with liberals.
Reagan, Thompson, Bush, and the others you cite actually articulated policy positions. Obama says two words, "hope" and "change" and the crowd goes nuts. He talks in platitudes - anybody can do that. Face it, Obama is an empty suit.
I'm a Dittohead. Do you know what that is? No, because you have not listened to Rush. It's not a mind-numbed robot as your ilk likes to define Dittohead. It's someone who thinks and believes a certain way and has certain principles, whose beliefs are not reflected by the dinosaur media, and who finds that Rush articulates our ideas and principles. We don't follow him blindly however inspirational we find him to be. And I'm a dittohead who voted strictly Dem for almost 28 years. Many dittoheads are just like me -- former lefty libs (including folks here). Wrap your brain around that and embrace it.
Most of the tripe you are spouting comes from the Drive-Bys, not from Republicans or conservatives (learn the difference). So get a clue.
You may not be interested in war, but war is interested in you.
Your need to bash someone with an opinion other than yours is very indicative of extreme behavior. You also projected on him things that he didn't say and finally, what took you so long (28 years) to get a clue? I agree wholeheartedly with beecubed. Why do you think the democrats took over congress in the last election? Americans are a little tired and need some inspiration. Obama is, to beecubed's point, eliminating the tarnish from the left. What have republican's done to help America feel better and support our current president? Oh yeah, they're nominating the oldest person in history to run for president, real exciting. A guy that you will have the same problem with as Obama. Does anyone REALLY know what they are getting with Senator McCain? I think only he knows which makes him just as dangerous a Obama. So much for principles as you said.
Great comment beecubed.
Democrats: Aborting infant democracies since 1961!
first-to beecubed, all that aww shucks business, the having a beer with him, and the rest is NOT National Enquirer Mentality...Bush did lines of coke in college-don't vote for him IS National Enquirer mentality.
Obama's love affair with the Oprah! and the "reliving Camelot" nonsense is ALSO National Enquirer mentality. And "removing the tarnish of Liberalism?" That right there is RICH-he's gonna SO remove the tarnish that when the left wakes up after the buffing party they're going to find that Socialism was down there under that top coat of varnish all along. Give me a break-this man wants Government to solve all problems, and assume enough responsibility over your lives as to ordain the Government as the sole arbiter (and definer) of what a problem really IS...and will choose which problems they'll solve FOR you...wake up.
And before you start firing off a response, we agree on this much-the Republicans DO suck just as bad, but that said-I'd rather be fighting over policy and implications than hopes and dreams and new shopping networks.
and, el hombre, "Americans are a little tired and need some inspiration" says a lot...Americans are tired and want their elected representatives to do their freaking jobs. The Democrats took over Congress on a list of promises they never kept. Will Americans stick with them now because they are still "inspired?" My bet is no-but keep on thinking otherwise.
ps-did you catch how beecubed called Bush "our President?"
Can we call Obama THEIR President when this song-and-dancer-without-a-plan gets elected and starts screwing up?
Nah-didn't think so-that, you see, would be a double standard...the Left can do it, but God FORBID the right ever try...
Iustum et tenacem propositi virum non civium ardor prava iubentium, non vultus instantis tyranni mente quatit solida.
-Quintus Horatius Flaccus
Gosh, "Liberal!" just doesn't have the visceral punch it used to, huh? You have to go right to "Socialist!" now?
This might surprise you, but liberals are actually pretty excited about the possibility of getting a President that can be an effective mouthpiece for liberalism.
I'd rather be fighting over policy and implications than hopes and dreams and new shopping networks.
That's funny, because pretty much the only discussion I ever see here involving Obama is of the "Empty suit!" or "Barack Hussein! Obama" or "Socialist!" variety. If you want to talk policies, do it.
As to whether he's "our" President or "your" President, I think it is pretty likely that, if he is the advocate for liberalism I think he can be, liberals will be perfectly happy for conservatives to distance themselves from him.
First, you're assuming Obama is in the mainstream. He represents the college "I know better than you/never-had-a-real-job/snot-nosed" liberal punk kids, in other words, Deaniacs. That attitude constitutes a major part of liberalism's tarnish. Obama won't remove it, he'll reinforce it. Hell, he's always claiming that he's been right on every issue.
Also, he's very naive to think that he's going to change politics with all of his empty rhetoric. If he wants to change politics, he's going to have to explain how, which he hasn't done.

The things that getting conservatives' attention are exactly those things that attract progressives. His "proud liberal" message will never hurt him with his base.
The question becomes: Will the message scare off everybody else?

We would also like to know your advice for somebody like my daughter, who's going to graduate in two years, advice that you would give a young person.
SEC. RUMSFELD: Advice for a young person. Study history.
What I see is Obama using the Bush playbook.
Talk about being a unifier.
Talk about judgment and character.
Don't give specifics on hardly any policies while campaigning to open yourself up to attack.
Back a couple of policies that there is a broad national consensus on - like health care for uninsureds and ending Iraq.
This type of strategy worked for Bush and now Obama is doing it to capture independants and moderates despite his very liberal beliefs.
Actually, Bush ran on a platform where he said precisely what he would do - even in 2000. Everybody knew Bush's policy positions and goals. Bush often repeated them -- whether it was his desire to cut spending, create a Prescription Drug Plan for seniors, appoint conservatives to the Court, or reform Social Security, he was ALWAYS upfront about what he would do.
Obama on the other hand will not say what he believes because his views will be rejected by a majority of the American people.
the Democrat base who votes in primaries knows that there isn't a dime's worth of difference between Hillary and Obama. They're simply choosing whether they want the first black or first women president. That's all their campaigns come down to: identity politics (plus the unlikeability of HRC). The Democrat voters have obviously decided that resume isn't important as neither of these candidates has accomplished jack squat in their careers (other than being the first black this and the first woman that...)
When it comes to the general election, Obama will have to explain why he should be president. His resume (or lack thereof) will stand in stark contrast to McCain's. That would be advantage: McCain. Thus Obama will have to demonstrate why his ideas are better than McCain's record. His ideas are basically socialist, so he'll face an uphill battle.

The Democratic primary is definitely a classic example of "identity politics". Unfortunately for Hillary, and I think for Republicans also, is that her "identity" is cracking under the pressure. I'd much rather be facing the Ice Queen than Obama come November.
Obama has not been forced to detail his positions because its the Dem primary. What other Dem has? What Republican really did?
The primaries are a popularity contest...it's a kidney punch from your friends delivered with a wink and a smile. We fight, and yell, and threaten, but in the end we're all Republicans.
Dems are human too....I think mostly....
When the Dem primary is over, ours already is whether Huckster admits it or not, I agree that there will more specifics demanded. I also agree that will generally be a good thing for John McCain. I honestly don't think it will matter though.
I think Obama is going to be our next POTUS.
I'm just working on how to profit off a Dem/Dem WH/Congress.
in the rock world. Which is fine in the rock world but dangerous in a presidential candidate. This thing between Obama and his fans seems emotional and almost sexual. (He seems androgynous to me and maybe that's the appeal.)
You may not be interested in war, but war is interested in you.
As I have said before, he is seen as a messiah. Others are now starting to notice and even poke fun or state this. Maybe he can join the anuals of time with the likes of Jim Jones, David Koresh or even Marshall Applewhite. He should start the Heaven's Branch of Davidians in Jonestown cult and take his followers with him, or something.

The problem with McCain is that he is not a good politician.
Against Obama, even with a running mate like Condi, McCain will be operating with significant handicaps. Think Jack vs. a very old version of Dick Nixon in 1960, and you get the drift. Yes, we need to run on victory in war, and stand and fall with that, and use that as a platform for future cycles (as Reagan did in 1976), but the cycle favors the Blue Team this time out. However....
If I can get a little Marxian with everyone here, the internal contradictions in the Democratic Coalition that Barack is building won't be exposed until it is too late, until after he is in office and he realizes that he has to raise taxes, that he can't pull troops out in a year (Brezezinski will tell him this in no uncertain terms, so will Kissinger, so will Colin Powell, in his new incarnation as Token Republican In The Cabinet). Watching Obama get his lunch money stolen from him in return for an imitation Persian Rug by Ahmadhi-Nejad will be distressing, but there will be a certain poetic justice to the proceedings.
David Brooks' column of today is a mandatory read for what awaits the Young Jesus should he actually be unlucky enough to win on a Peace Now Platform.
The reaction of the Base will run the gamut between spastic outrage and vicious hate, and Barack won't have George Bush around to absorb any of the anger. He'll be totally exposed to a fissure within his own party.
You want to see the magnitude of Barack's problem? This is the now-famous photograph from Barack's Campaign Office in Houston, Texas. They say a photograph says a thousand words:

Average voters don't see this yet because the News Media is covering for Barack. Eventually, though, this stuff will start to get through when Regular Voters start paying attention. That's when the voters will find out the difference between this New And Improved Jesus and the Real Thing.
"History will be kind to me, for I intend to write it"-Winston Churchill
"after he is in office and he realizes that he has to raise taxes"
Why is that realization particular to Obama? I think the next prez will face budgeteers who will insist upon increasing taxes.
McCain will face this challenge also and it is essential that he give specifics on how he plans to hold or reduce taxes.
Of course McCain will face the same pressures. It has nothing to do with partisanship. However, couple a tax increase with increasing pressure from a the Thousand Bantustans of Democratic Party interest groups that will be demanding Their Fair Share of the Swag, and you can see what will become of the Young Man's regime. Add to this the necessity for Barack to slow down the withdraw of Petraeus' Army from Iraq so as not to completely hand over the region to the Persians, and you get a witches brew for the new Administration.
Complete betrayal and anger all 'round.
"History will be kind to me, for I intend to write it"-Winston Churchill

I find it hard to take liberalism very seriously when I watch the 2 twits that they want to run America. Liberals have a choice between a socialist and a demagogue, who cares which one it'll be??
a Luntz focus group on Hannity/Colmes was asked to name ONE of BO's accomplishments.
1. He voted on something in the Senate.
2. He was inspiring.
3. He was black.
Quite a resumé.
thinks about the application of Sharia law when only Muslims are involved. Seems to be quite the rage in Great Britain.

That you could tell the Obama supporters at the Washington caucuses by their designer clothes. She said that the caucus structure is more suited to affluent professionals than more working class people like her and her husband, who have to carve out time from their jobs to attend. Very interesting perspective.
I will give Obama credit for a spiritual revival - at Gucci Gulch, at least.
