Peering into the demented mind of the America-hating left

When I am not blogging here or at my personal blog, Southern Appeal, I occasionally blog at another group blog, Vox Nova, dedicated to addressing various and sundry Catholic issues. I think it is fair to say that Vox Nova is a left-leaning blog, but, to my co-bloggers' credit, they invited me on to provide a different, more conservative perspective.

Well, recently, there was some discussion at Vox Nova over Reverend Wright's disgraceful comments about our great republic, with several commenters defending those vile statements, along with a few of my co-bloggers. And it will come as no surprise to y'all that many of these folks are also big-time Obama supporters.

So, I thought to myself: I wonder what would happen if I published a simple post with an image of the American Flag and the lyrics to God Bless America, and nothing more. Well, the result is nothing short of remarkable; and it is hardly atypical. These folks really loathe their own country.

This is nothing new, of course, but it always amazes me when I see it up close and personal.

Update: Three of my co-bloggers at Vox Nova--Nate, Policraticus, and Morning's Minion--have prepared posts in response to my "God Bless America" post, which I commend to y'all for different perspectives on this issue.

I only got through about 1/2 to 3/4 of the comments but it seems like there were just two over the top persistent loons*.

*not to be offensive to loons. They are lovely animals.

I figured a Christian site would be more polite and less likely to elevate my blood pressure than the others.

You have Mark D. , and Michael I, that I saw, going bonkers somebody would post a picture of the flag. You have M.Z. forrest who confesses to being an America hater but a polite one that isn't pavlovian conditioned like the other two. Then you have Teutonic Tim and a few others going up against them.

You might want to quit while you're ahead. :)

Hey, look at the bright side - Higher Power trashed CNN HQ last night....

You should post "My Name is Old Glory" and see how bad they flip out.

A stanza:
I fly atop the world's tallest buildings.
I stand watch in America's halls of justice.
I stand side by side with the Maple Leaf on the worlds longest undefended border.
I fly majestically over institutions of learning.
I stand guard with power in the world.
Look up and see me.

I stand for peace, honor, truth and justice.
I stand for freedom.
I am confident.
I am arrogant.
I am proud.

When I am flown with my fellow banners,
my head is a little higher,
my colors a little truer.

I bow to no one!I Am
I am recognized all over the world.
I am honored - I am saluted.
I am loved - I am revered.
I am respected -- and I am feared.

Courage becomes a living and an attractive virtue when it is regarded not only as a willingness to die manfully, but also as a determination to live decently.

You know, I'm not sure posting something to the internet (as I do here) and then, out of the millions of people online, finding a few nutjobs posting stupidities is all that definitive. Maybe you should cast a wider net? The liberals that I meet are just as proud of their country as any conservative, they just pick different symbols to revere. So "God Bless America" provokes some people because they believe that God looks kindly on all people, and doesn't just chose one nation to bestow his blessings on. But maybe every single person who claims to be a liberal is a lunatic who should be shot down in the street for their bigoted hatred of america, or maybe not.

to post that at www.dailykos.com! The little Lefties would go NUTS.

Had 4 brothers in the service with him. 5 at once.

And they came home with 6 purple hearts & 2 bronze stars.

My Dad flew over 30 combat missions.

He is a liberal - a democrat - and a contributer to Hillary - and he loves this country with every fiber of his body. And has the scares to prove it.

It seems like you succeeded in provoking the reaction you were working to provoke.

Deep, Neil, really profound.

You would have seen an entirely different reaction.

Kudos to you father. And thank him for me for his noble service to our country.

Quick story you might like -

My Dad is a pro-union liberal who has voted Democrat with every vote in his entire life. He was against the Iraq war and thinks Bush is a terrible president.

I was playing golf with him and we got in a 4-some with a German who actually lived through a bombing mission my dad was on. They had a warm moment of acknowledging they were once enemies and could now play golf together.

Later, the German started being very critical of President Bush. My dad got quiet.

When the German said that Bush was a "Son of a B*" that was it.

My father refused to play with him. He said he could play golf with a former enemy, but couldn't play golf with someone who disrespects the President of the United States.

The German apologized profusely, but my dad wouldn't budge. We waited as a couple of groups went by before we completed our round with just the two of us.

And fwiw, my mom is a Bush-hating liberal. :)

I don't think you are serious.

One reason that I became a Republican is that Reagan invited me to come over while not having to hate those I left behind. He told me that people like my Dad could be great Americans even if they are wrong on the issues.

At the same time, the left wing was telling me I was a money-grubbing, gun violence loving racist for believing the things I did.

It made the change easy.

Republicans throw around surrender and treason quite a bit these days. To me, those are still incredibly powerful words.

During the 70'sI remember my construction-worker Dad leaving us on Sunday nights, driving 9 hours to share a room with 3 other guys so he could work on a union job site. I remember waiting up way past my bedtime on Fridays to welcome a tired man home.

He sacrificed for his family and for what he believed in.

Now, I may not believe in the same things, but I sure as hell respect him for walking his talk.

I will never call him quitter, coward or treasonous.

I just expressed surprise that someone who knows what it takes to preserve our freedom would vote for people who don't.

the readers over at Vox Nova recognized that you were just trying to provoke people. I didn't get very far reading the comments before I decided I wasn't going to find any genuine "America haters" in that thread (though there may have been one or two Alexham "haters").

It's strange that you think someone responding negatively to your transparent attempt to provoke makes him or her an America hater. You ought to set the bar a little higher.

PS I hate the Star Spangled Banner and God Bless America -- as music and songs, but I don't hate America. Sorry, but every time I hear the Star Spangled Banner my thoughts are less about what a great country this is and more about how lucky Finland was to have Jean Sibelius write Finlandia. I would enthusiastically support a new national anthem -- as long as it's not God Bless America.

Really ponder - not just on the first verse, but all of them. You may not care for the music, but I can't see how anyone could not have a great respect and admiration for the lyrics.

as a poem. Perhaps someone could write new music for it. Of course, tastes vary.

I don't know if you are familiar with Finlandia, but when I hear it, especially the less often heard (in this country anyway) version with lyrics, I am deeply moved. Now, if the Finns would just adopt it as their national anthem....

There's really no reason to have a national anthem that doesn't couple great music with great lyrics. Still, my dislike of the Star Spangled Banner has never risen to the level where I feel compelled to head a national campaign to adopt a new anthem. But, were I to do so, I dare say it wouldn't make me an "America hater," though some would doubtless make that charge.

dishonesty. They always say that they are being more "mature" than the flag wavers by offering criticisms of America. But the truth is that they are intellectually dishonest because their "criticism" is never balanced.

They always bring up slavery and Jim Crow, while never dwelling one second on all the blood and money spent to end those things by Americans. They go off on a tangent about "colonialism", "exploitation", and "unjust wars" while never a word about how the USA defended the freedoms of the worlds nations at great cost to itself for nearly an entire century, and at the same time fed, clothed, and gave medical assistance to the poor of the world to the tune of billions upon billions of dollars.

The pacifists in that post are the one's who bring out my total ire. Pacifism among Christians is a thorough misreading of scripture, and it is intellectually indefensible as pacifist can only exist in a nation where some brave men were willing to die for their right to be morons.
