1/2 Hour News Hour Returns

Creating a Genre

The first episode of the 1/2 Hour News Hour shown a couple of weeks ago was a ratings success. I heard a lot of people complained about various technical aspects and were perhaps disappointed it wasn't as polished as liberal comedy bomb The Daily Show. My household will make 1/2 Hour appointment viewing tonight.

What I remember is that The Daily Show was rough when Craig Kilborn started it and didn't transition easily to Jon Stewart. The Daily Show is impressive now, but it didn't start that way.

I strongly recommend you tune in tonight at 10pm eastern on Fox News for the next installment of the 1/2 Hour News Hour. If it takes off, it wouldn't be the worst thing to be able to decompress in the evenings with some previously unavailable satire of the left-wing.

And, if the full season's run turns out to be not so funny, then it might fail. But, IMO, the show deserves more of a chance than just two pilot shows. If we watch, it should get that chance.

7 minutes into episode 2, verdict: still not funny. :(

they were so wanting for material they had to end the show at 10:23. that's 23 minutes minus 2 commercial breaks.

It was a pretty bad show tonight in my view. It didn't even have the ACLU fake commercials which were pretty good last time.

I think is that we've already made all of these jokes. the actor asking for'ners to adopt an ex-pat celebrity that hasn't found a home was good, but not original. same for the expert cluelessly searching for the connection, the "self-esteem" pantywaist and others. maybe with timely commentary it would be worthwhile, but maybe not. I don't think we conservatives need a Jon Stewart to tell us when something is funny or ironic (or make something up if its not); we'll already have observed it for ourselves.

I also thought the pacing was off too, or was it just me.

Take the segment you point out, the "looking for the connection" bit, I got the joke after the first time, but after the third, or was it fourth time through...it got stale.

They'd probably also do better with some of the old "biting the hand that feeds them", aka poke some fun at the conservative side of the ditch too. Lord knows conservatives can be just as silly as Liberals at times, and a good laugh at one's self is always a good thing.

It was a disappointment. Coulter before her Edwards comment at CPAC was funnier. The writing and format of 1/2 Hour News Hour are off the mark. Slapstick humor doesn't work well here. There definately is a market for political satire harpooning the left but maybe more of a Leno / stand up format.

The bit with the educator was hilarious. The Hug of peace and Duck Duck Goose in the original german were priceless.

It's too much of a sketch comedy show and too little satire. The Daily Show is entertaining because of the satire, the subtle jokes, and letting the politicians and their own words as fodder.

This is too much like an SNL format, which hasn't been funny in a decade. I think they missed the boat on what made people tune in to the Daily Show. I also think they need much better hosts.

...a channel which is titularly dedicated to real news. FNC is not Comedy Central, or even one of the networks, which offsets its broadcast news with other fare. FNC is intended to be a NEWS channel - hence the fNc - and to add a show which is purposely fake news does it and its NEWS audience - and defenders - a disservice.

On FOX perhaps, but not on Fox NEWS.

That's the least of my concerns. I mean Greta isn't "news," H&C isn't "news," O'Reilly isn't "news". The shows that are more actual news are Brit Hume and The Fox Report, the rest is commentary and opinion. My beef with THHNH was the comedy level - it was non-existent in the 2nd pilot, the first one had some alright skits/bits. The show does have promise. I do see what you're getting at, but I think that lags behind the other problems.
