We have not seen the brains of the outfit in a long time around here.

The New England Patriots were fined a first round draft pick for their role in "spygate". However, in the wake of a trade with the 49er's last year, they have the number 7 overall pick in the draft.

Wow, life can be weird at times.

But to keep this a political post, I still look on in the wake of the Bhutto assassination and wonder if and when things will spin out of control in the GWOT.

I am not to worried about a recession after hearing that new home sales rose last month. The recession is the manufactured news of the MSM that need it to elect a Democrat, it is not reality to me, that is for sure.

Any takers on the above thoughts?

after watching the news clips coming out of Pakistan, it's pretty bizarre to see how close that gunman got to the Bhutto motorcade.

Nasty chest cold this weekend (which figures, finally got 4 days to work on my cars). Besides, it's probably gonna get down to 40 tonight in DFW.

Wife and kids are partying with our buddies -- noisy board games and whatnot -- I'm guarding the fort, cashing it in before 11pm. Cheering on my OkState Cowboys, who lead Indiana 35-10 in one of the thousands of cookie-cutter bowls.

So, perfect, quiet evening for me!

Prior to the start of the season, the Cowboys had the Browns' pick (#3 pick in 07) and the Pats had the Niners' pick (#11 in 07). Now it looks like the Pats get #7, the Cows about #20.

It is a cruel world.

The Browns surprised EVERYBODY. And to add strangeness to irony -- the Cows got their #1 by trading the pick for which the Browns got Brady Quinn. Cleveland was 10-6 led by QB Derek Anderson, and Brady Quinn barely saw the field.

Stare decisis is fo' suckas -- Feddie

everyone says bundle them to get a top 5, I say keep them and get two studs. I still feel burnt over the Galloway trade.

Two first rounders for their #7 pick. The Pat's and Cows have trade history and might - who knows.

I agree -- #20 and #31 equal 2 guaranteed studs (forget bobby Carpenter for a moment). Bundling them ain't all that good either. According to the magic draft-pick trading formula, a #20 & #31 together can get you some thing like a #8.

That ain't worth it to me.

Oh, and the Galloway debacle, you are so right.....ugh.

Stare decisis is fo' suckas -- Feddie

According to others who have watched the new video, they said the shots were heard very clearly (multiple shots), and Bhutto did go down momentarily before explosion came along.

I'm deaf, so I cannot know for sure, but I'm interested on a conservative's take on the new video...

It can be found on liveleak.com, don't go there if you're at work, as it's not work friendly. Just a warning...

But if it's true, does this change how we view Pakistan, Musharraf, AQ, and ISI in general? That's one of things I'm beginning to waver in my belief that we need to stand behind Musharraf. I feel this is one of things that will end up as a disaster for America's forein policy and GWOT.

It is bizarre kinda scary that the guy got that close. Yes, you clearly hear three distinct shots crack. It really makes you wonder what the heck is going on there. That is why I really question this spinning out of control.

That is the thing that I am most concerned about for 2008.

I just want wish all the friends I've made around the world Happy New Year and thank them for enriching my life.

As a frequent customer of Trader Joe's, I am a fan of "Two Buck Chuck" (which is actually $2.99/bottle here in MO). Any other inexpensive wine recommendations? I've had many of the cut-rate brands in the grocery, such as Yellow Tail...most are mediocre, at best. I recently had a bottle of Pinot Noir which was about $10.00, and it was quite good (sorry, don't remember the brand) - and I think I may become a fan of that variety, even though I'm mostly a Cabernet person.

Suggestions?

and my sage advice about booze probably doesn't apply... but I always like to get in my pithy little quip:

"If you have to bend over to get your alcohol; don't."

_Anything from Columbia Crest or Chateau St. Michelle is good quality for the price.
If you want to go up in price to about $9.00, Ravenswood makes some great red Zinfandels (not the bubblegum white zin which is basically a wine cooler).

For more expensive picks, say $15 - $20 a bottle, normally French wines from the Rhone or Chablis are great deals for world class wine because many Americans are afraid to buy wines not named by varietal. This is a long term pick because currency fluctuations make French stuff expensive at the moment.

Well, until recently, anyway.

They had a cab/merlot blend that was surprisingly good for around $8/bottle.

This year I saw that the new batch had replaced the good-old-fashioned cork with a (*SHUDDER*) bottlecap.

So I don't feel I can recommend it anymore.

But, had you asked me last year, I would have said "Black Opal, hands down."

Man is free at the moment he wishes to be. --Voltaire

they pretty much taste the same, the "new world" fruit foward style, but are still good. Lindemans, Opal, bin 444, etc. They are better than Yellow tail, which is all marketing and just generic stuff. It is best to go with Shiraz, that is what Aus is known for. Also, the Greg Norman stuff is good wine for a couple bucks more.

Had a great weekend in DC. Walked the National Mall and saw the monuments, ate a meal at the Ruth's Chris Steak House there, and sat in the rain at Fedex Field and watched the Washington Redskins thwomp the Dallas Cowboys 27-6...which when you subtract six from 27 you get 21, which is Sean Taylor's team number.

How's that for no politics...Happy New Year to all!!

I am looking forward to the Redskins taking out Seattle and will be having a playoff party to boot ;-)

That really was an emotional win for those guys and it made the New Year all the more special.

However, one needs to remember Hasselbeck is no Eli Manning, he's not going to make stupid mistakes (yes, Eli is one stupid stud, mind you). He'll rip Redskins defense apart if he plays smart (again, Eli is one stupid stud).

Even if Redskins win, they have to go to Dallas, it'll be a major feat to accomplish if they somehow come out as the winner in Dallas game. But then I guess Redskins aren't a bunch of Eli Mannings, now are they? (Yes, once again, Eli Manning is a fool and a stupid stud. Gaints should have won the game against Pats.)

since the incident. In fact, I would say the Cowboys have been the best about it. All the best to Taylor's family and the Redskins family concerning this tragedy.

Having said that, Dallas at full strength will crush the skins. I hope they win a few games and earn the right to come to Dallas for their third meeting. Dallas will be resting, planning, and watching. :)

after Taylor died....the silence and respect the fans showed was very moving....the rivalry is just for fun and I think the Redskins would crush Dallas again ;-)

Freedom of Religion not Freedom from Religion

There is a lot beneath the rivalry, much of it respect. The rivalry has helped both teams in many ways. Many do not know the unofficial Cowboy Mascot for 40 years, "Crazy Ray", and the Redskins Indian Cheif Zee were best of friend. Cheif Zee used to stay with Ray at Cowboys home games. Cheif Zee spoke at Crazy Ray's funeral this year, it was very moving. http://blog.washingtonpost.com/dcsportsbog/2007/11/chief_zees_big_weeken...

Molon Labe!

I heard there's a Presidential Election that's going to happen in 2012. It's right there on the calendar! Someone is going to have to start campaigning right away to win that election, and it's obvious that the earlier people start, the sooner they'll be ready for the Big Showdown™.

So I think at least half the sentient people in the world who read this blog are already thinking about 2012. Of course, by extension (it's really just adding numbers together...a little-known secret!) that means they should also be thinking about the races in 2016 and 2020 and onward and upward until at least the year 2400.

After 2400, I predict that elections will be unnecessary. All votes will be tabulated intergalactally at least one light-year in advance, and all humanescent beings on Earth will be able to know each other's thoughts through the IGC System (IGC = Instantaneous Geospatial Contact).

Therefore with just a small correction needed due to the stubbornness of the Speed of Light, after 2400 elections will be unnecessary as all sentient beings will instantaneously know what everyone else is thinking on any subject, and all of the results will be immediately available because at the instant they think their "thoughts" they will be tabulated and recorded faithfully, through the Telos/Mythos system.

Will be a knockoff of the older, crankier ICTS (Intraplanetary Cognitive Telemeric Synaptics) system, which relied on the "being" or the "user" to positively allow a cognate to be aggregated with what came to be known as a "click", in archaic reference to ancient computer haptic devices. The Intergalactic Telemeric/Mythomeric (a.k.a. Telos/Mythos) system will be a big advancement because it requires no active intervention or even the assumption of action on the part of the sentient being. All thoughts will simply be aggregated and the only "delay" will be due to the speed of light and the according relativistic time displacements.

A large number of jokes will be known to every homosentient in the system, but of course at the instant they are known, they'll already be unfunny. You might be able to joke, for example, that the Jupitarians are a few milliseconds behind, but because of feed-forwarding of Earth Telemerics, they'll already know that and have come up with an instantaneous riposte.

Humor will die because timing will cease to exist!

Stare decisis is fo' suckas -- Feddie

This is all going to come to pass because of electronic communication devices being widespread amongst the young!

At the beginning, every child will want to have an Orbital Intraplanetery Simultaneous Uplink Coordinator (O.I.S.U.C.) chip installed behind their foveas so that they can communicate with their "friends" through the Intraplanetary Network. All very innocuous, everyone will think...especially since a part of the chip is secretly devoted to allowing their parents to montior their foveal transmissions using the proprietary Wellbeing Evaluation Simultaneous Uplink Coordinator (W.E.S.U.C.) channel, which is only available to parents.

Everything rapidly evolves from that point and by the time 2400 arrives, realtime feedback and feedforward of instantaneous thought transmission across interplanetary and eventually intergalactic spaces is considered mundane. You'll be galactically bored because at that point nothing will literally be funny, ever again! It simply won't be possible.

Don't say I didn't warn you. ;)

There... are no words.

There is no President but Lincoln, and Reagan is his prophet

First of all, it's proprietary and closed-source. ;)

Second, in reality there is only *one* electron. There is really no such thing as a "word" or even really a "bit". Everything anyone "sees" at any point in time is an artifact of the underlying infinte dimensionality of the Universe. Other temporospatial universes not only coincide with ours, they arrange themselves into patterns that then appear to us as actual events within our own temporospatial framework. However, they're not: they're infinitely multidimensional instances of the *same thing*. There is no arrow of time, it's a circle.

No, I'm not stoned. That's the way it is. Infinity is really big, and that's the Universe. There is only one electron, and God has it. That's why he's God.

but more often than not, as this year, there is a total fire ban because of the weather (fireworks were exempted).

BTW, if you've never seen fireworks over snow, do it some time - it's beyond spectacular.

like this last year (well, 2006) - not fireworks, but a wildfire. A ski resort, surrounded and severely threatened by a fire coming up the mountain. extinguished by a snowstorm on Christmas Eve. We don't often get a white Christmas, even on mountain tops, but there has never been one so welcome as this.

Isn't Christmas right after the summer solistice down under? How then are you getting snow that would make it almost to the valleys? Do you get blasts from Antarctica or something? I can't think of anywhere in the U.S. that would get snow in late June.

And Rightly So!

That's about 2,500 feet above sea level. That's a really low altitude.

And Rightly So!

Yes, we do get cold blasts - we're between the Southern Ocean and the hot inland. But snow in summer is very rare, and wildfires are very common. Ironically, this ski resort was at the time recovering from a very poor winter.

“.....women and minorities hardest hit”

I'm glad there's an open thread here, because I don't much like the bland issues that get "mainstream" conservatives' opinion.

If you really are concerned about the fate of America, you must be concerned about its immigration policy. And to put it bluntly, letting in millions of low-IQ Mestizos/Amerinds from Latin America or anywhere for that matter is a recipe for disaster. Ideally, even legal non-citizens with low IQs/low education/low skills would be effectively deported, by having no right to work, and heavily punishing employers who hire them (same strategy as with the illegals). As for the legal citizen low IQ immigrants, bribe them to return home. To slow the low IQ birthrates, stop giving additional benefits to families who have kids while on welfare. Change the tax code to stop subsidizing births to poor mothers.

Yes there are high IQ Mestizos/Amerinds but they are a rarity. About 75% of Latinos score below the white median on IQ tests and tests like the AFQT, and only a mere 0.9% score over 125, The Bell Curve's criteria for being in the cognitive elite. This compares to 5% of whites and 10% or maybe even more East Asians scoring above this level [IQ 125]. Immigration should be either stopped or only open to the intelligent.

Individually, low-IQ people can be very good hearted...but if the IQ distribution of a nation is too low (as is the case outside of Europe and East Asia, and especially in Africa), the entire nation goes to pot. When a nation cannot take care of its own, it does not matter how good hearted some individuals are...try maintaining a good heart where there's no power or running water--see here, for example.
[Ctrl f + "joshua"]

Yes, there are other things that count besides IQ, like civic-mindedness and motivation. But if anything Mestizo immigrants are behind on these measures as well, especially the civic-mindedness part.

Bottom line:no IQ, no quality of life

I'm glad there's an open thread here, because I don't much like the bland issues that get "mainstream" conservatives' opinion.

Great. Trying to intimidate me and get the admin to ban me because you disagree, and because your just too darn good for riff-raff issues like IQ and race. You are a prime example of why America is going down the drain:

People compare PC to the Soviets, and say that it will fall like the Berlin Wall fell. But the Soviets faced opposition! There *was* a competing message out there, and it wasn't from a Nobel Laureate and a Harvard Presidents who could be isolated and then eliminated. That competing message was coming from the most powerful civilization in the world, one that was even more wealthy and armed with nuclear weapons to boot. And even when *no one* believed in it anymore, with Radio Free America pelting the airwaves and breadlines in the streets, it took decades for Communism to collapse.

But what civilization today is fighting against PC? Why would it collapse?
It controls the military, the media, the government, the corporations, and the universities. All of Western Civ has been compromised. You try to fight it publicly, and you will be quickly deprived of a job and (perhaps even more importantly) of access to mates. If you live off the grid (something almost impossible to do nowadays) you are a person of no relevance, while if you live on the grid you are vulnerable. You can't even go meta and ask who is pushing PC and why. The penalties for asking such questions are even more severe.

YOu do not intimidate me at all with your intellect. I don't really care if you are banned or not. You are a racist, that shows you are likely low on the intellectual, financial, and societal totem pole. Btw, you don't need me to get banned, you are doing a great job on your own.

I'd like to ask a question. It's a simple question and anyone with your IQ should be able to answer it plainly:

Do the first five characters of your nick here at RedState have anything to do with this?

I'm stupid. Please educate me.

Or reply to comments. But the birch barlow is a sideways self-reveal for our erstwhile interloper. Birch Barlow is an overdone caricature of a conservative commentator on that most important of all shows, The Simpsons (peace be upon them).

It's one of those clever little confessions, you see, that the lefty right-impersonators think will slip past us. Our Birch (and I use "our" only to differentiate from the slightly more fictional one) is also a caricature, as I mentioned below. One of those self-satisfied types who is all too certain of their own uber tasty cleverness, that comes here to pretend at being one of us, in order to say horrible things, in order to go back to the realms of the dark side and point an accusatory finger our way. There be monsters, they say, and get their little pats on the head from their liberal overlords. It's all very exciting for them, I'm sure, but it tends to boring after eighty-thousand attempts, I should think.

At least, though, we can take joy in the fact that the recently deceased is no doubt fuming at his or her inability to reply to our mocking. Ahhhhh, it's the little things isn't it, kowalski?

I know that IQ matters, especially to me, because there are times -- like right now -- when I read posts -- like yours -- that my IQ falls to approximately 56 out of sheer disappointment.

It also happens that my IQ fluctuates according to what I eat and drink, and what people I converse with, and how stimulating my environment is, and which books I've read recently, and how hard I intend to concentrate on what I'm doing, and how much I need to be smart given the task at hand, and how much, in other words, the world around me *requires* me to be intelligent.

Now, I'll be the first to admit that stupid people aren't any help to anyone, especially preternaturally stupid people and others who are thinly-disguised racists who don't believe that IQ as a physical trait or an inherited characteristic can reasonably be understood as applying to all races of human beings, everywhere on the planet. There are real differences between individuals but in terms of human beings generally there's very little aggregate difference. Smart people from different races will always tend to marry smart people: it happens all the time in law schools all across the United States.

Of course, eating enough food can help, and being exposed to education can help, but each individual is unique.

In the meantime, the best way to keep people's IQ high is not to make stupid statements, I think.

Now zip up your pants, and go somewhere more tolerable to your kind.

even assuming that the guy hardly ever posted a (for want of a more appropriate word) thought, how does a (for want of a better word) person like that manage to stay registered for over 3 years without outing himself?

You think it was to much vino veritas?

At many instances in the past. Thomas has probably seen a few of them.

There's a whole classification system for trolls here on RedState, and the nomenclature is every bit as specific as the Eskimo terms for snow.

...I thought at first that "birch barlow" might have been Thomas flipping the bird on the way out the door.

Both have been registered 3 years, 24 weeks.

But Thomas could never find humor in racism.

And he'd never leave an open tag.

...that they have an account; or else it's some sort of sexual fetish thing. You can justify any sort of strange behavior if it's a sexual fetish thing.

In Vino Veritas

And by the way, I had a very good December and have a very ample supply of Dom that I'm putting to good use tonight. I have three more hours of '07 yet.

Now say something about women being inferior, and then add in a barely altered, semi-obscure Mein Kampf quote, run back to DKos, link to the "conservative jerk" at Redstate saying all the offensive things and get your cookie for having "found" it.

Also, no extra points for the username. You aren't half as clever as you're trying to appear, and not a quarter as much as you think you are.

Run along, now. I've seen this routine before and it wasn't impressive the first time, either. Only turkeys have left wings.

Gov. Blunt and the legislature are working on some tough illegal immigration measures. He's already deputized the state police to enforce immigration law.

We won a lot of football games but we fell one win away from the NatChamp game.

Oklahoma also booted out most illegal immigrants through some draconian laws that are in the process of being challenged in court.

Tulsa rejected another tax increase to fund river development handing the generally popular D mayor a setback.

And finally, the state's trees iced over in December leading to a national emergency, the loss of power for over 800,000 of the 3.5 million residents (most for several days to a week), and some really neat photography.
