Early in The Long War

Accordingly, we decided to send to our Ambassador in Berlin instructions which he was to hand at 9 o'clock this morning to the German Foreign Secretary and which read as follows:-
"Sir,
"In the communication which I had the honour to make to you on the 1st September, I informed you, on the instructions of His Majesty's Principal Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, that unless the German Government were prepared to give His Majesty's Government in the United Kingdom satisfactory assurances that the German Government had suspended all aggressive action against Poland and were prepared promptly to withdraw their forces from Polish territory, His Majesty's Government in the United Kingdom would, without hesitation, fulfil their obligations to Poland.
"Although this communication was made more than twenty-four hours ago, no reply has been received but German attacks upon Poland have been continued and intensified. I have accordingly the honour to inform you that, unless not later than 11 a. m., British Summer Time, to-day 3rd September, satisfactory assurances to the above effect have been given by the German Government and have reached His Majesty's Government in London, a state of war will exist between the two countries as from that hour."
That was the final Note. No such undertaking was received by the time stipulated, and, consequently, this country is at war with Germany.
Neville Chamberlain, September 3, 1939.

Cross-posted at The Queen of All Evil:
When she was three, my daughter saw a plane flying overhead and asked me where it was going. "It could be going any number of places.", was my response. To which she replied, "No Daddy, it's only going one place."
In that same vein, earlier this week, she hands my wife a letter she helped me fish out of the mailbox:
"Here, Mommy. This letter is for you."
"Who's it from?"
"Um, it's from the mailman."
Finally, today, I'm helping her clean up her states puzzle. You know, one that has the exact shape of the all the states as the puzzle pieces. They come in four colors: Blue, Green, Red, and Yellow.
She says, "I only like the Red states."
"Why?", I asked.
"Because I don't like the other ones.", came the instantaneous reply.
True story.
Be not afraid
Now that people on the Sunday Morning Talk Shows are gleefully repeating the New York Times' assessment of Karl Rove -- that effectively he's a lame duck, impotent and disemboweled by the Plamegate sham, I'd like to know:
When are the Democrats going to be punished for this charade? I agree with Academic Elephant, talking about the shoe being on the other foot -- except that really, it isn't yet. Other than a few limp retratctions in the MSM (the Washington Post "regrets" anyone took Joesph WIlson IV seriously -- oh, boo hoo) the damage done to Karl Rove and this Administration by this ridiculous witch hunt hasn't been rectified and certainly hasn't been atoned for.
So when are Republicans going to get angry and really call for some comeuppance? I, for one, don't think that sitting back and breathing a little sigh of relief and a few blogosphere posts even approach the level of justice that should be meted out to the people responsible for this. Where's Mehlman? Why isn't he talking about this?
I am a hawkish warmonger with a crusty demeanour and a heart of steel. But I have a softer side.

Why would God invent a thing like whiskey? To keep the Irish from ruling the world of course.
Sometimes childish antics deserve recognition only as such.
My father keeps telling me this, that in spite of all the polls spelling Doomsday for the Republicans ever since the '02 election cycle, the Democrats keep losing seats (albeit, at a snail's pace). Let's hope the pattern holds or, better yet, picks up the pace this year and the next time. I get the feeling that these aging hippies are partying like it's 1968 all over again, but they don't even realize that this is a different war.
"Straight Talk Express"? My bum feet! -- Me, on Senator McCain and other "moderates"
Fitzmas being cancelled at all, they can't count on a 1974, either.

If you're seeing shades of gray, it's because you're not looking close enough to see the black and white dots.

I've been skepitcal of the idea in the past, but seeing that phrase "a state of war will exist," I now wonder if the American people believe in such a thing.
Before Fahrenheit 911, one of Michael Moore's characters played by Rip Torn mocked terrorists as "wackos in exploding rental cars," or words to that effect. And when we think of jets, tanks, and MOABS, or if we think of the old stories of WWII, the idea of being at war with those kind of people might seem far fetched.
Has the total war of WWII made today's conflicts of ours, as a superpower, just seem too trivial for the public to believe?
