I never thought I'd say this, but... Go, Hillary, Go!

Open thread.

[UPDATE by Erick:] Let me throw this into the open thread discussion. A friend of mine who is a very reputable pollster tells me that in California the major media polling firms did not do any spanish language polling. He also said that in Texas, despite the lessons they should have learned in California, the media is again not doing serious spanish language polling. With the Latino vote around 30% of the primary, Hillary could have a bigger polling advantage that we've seen, which is probably why Obama is setting the bar higher than "win" to "win with double digit lead."

[UPDATE by Ericka Andersen:] Amazing there is actually footage of John McCain in Vietnam but it’s helpful in times like these -- when Gloria Steinem is questioning his service and Liberals are downgrading the significance of his POW status as well. But the following John McCain video will touch politicos of any party or ideology, so watch and be moved:

I hope this race goes to the bitter end.

He's a freaking wimp. He can't even say what he truly believes, so he cowers like a little girl behind pastel colors and puffy clouds of 'hope' and 'change.'

Beat up the little girl, Hillary!

God, it felt weird.

My Primary voting location is hosting both Dem's and Repub's. The line was long for a primary but the Dem's are turning out in much bigger numbers then Republicans.

As a Repub. once I got inside the door my voteing went quick, but the Dems. were having to wait minutes for a booth. If this holds in November, McCain is in big trouble. I know of only 1 who is crossing over to vote Dem. (against Hillary) but we are going to get whipped good in November if McCain cannot pull the party together.

He can do it, but the question is , will he. I suspect he will give it the old McCain half-hearted try then say "I tried and to hell with those Conservatives if they do not want me".

If McCain does not put his all into getting us Conservatives to vote for him, he will lose 20+% of the base-thus lose.

Currently WRITING A NAME IN in NOVEMBER!!!

Turnout goes up and down for both parties. I wouldn't get to stressed about Republican turnout as McCain is the virtual candidate. Many Republicans then say, why go to the polls now as we already have our candidate.

With this going down to the wire, does it just not get more press out on both of them? As I recall in marketing, it doesn't matter if you get a bad news story or a good news story. It still gets more people thinking about you.

The Democratic convention of 1968, frex, got all sorts of publicity. They probably would have preferred much less, all things considered. :)

I think there's a misunderestimation of Hillary-if she manages to come back and win this thing-she's going to be the unbeatable comeback kid, and shes been running towards the center. Barack has made his bed with the far far left, and if he even inches to the center, they will be waiting for him with pitchforks and torches. I'd rather face a naive liberal than a cunning ruthless "centrist" (according to the media) anyday. I look forward to the Clintons being permanently out of politics.

McCain/Rudy 08-kill the terrorists and punch the hippies.

If she should get the nomination, it will not be by a decisive victory. And she will be accused (understandably, tho perhaps not justifiably) of winning dirty.

Plus, she will have defeated Hope Incarnate.

The leftwing base will be severely demoralized and will begin to listen, once again, the Siren Song of Nader.

So yes, given a clean win, Clinton will be more easy to defeat than Obama. But a Clinton who wins this summer will be easier to beat.

And yes, I think that McCain will clobber Obama just by exposing the truth--a lot of hard-left positions packaged with a big, fat, 70s smile.

"People will not look forward to posterity who never look backward to their ancestors." -Edmund Burke

Which is why she's getting buried in the primaries-but if she pulls it off, she and McCain have to fight for the center. Obama has no center appeal to a center-right nation. He is so buried in the left, that even if he does say to hell with the base, we have so much on his far left statements that he'll make John Kerry look like the Straight Talk Express.

backstab your way to the nomination and leave your party in ruins!

...in the last 3-4 days. She has maintained solid leads in Ohio and has ticked up in Texas, although her leads are in the margin of error.

I could see Hill winning Tex by 3-4 pts, and Ohio by 7-8 pts. If that happens, she's in it until at least Pennsylvania on April 22.

“.....women and minorities hardest hit”

...my guess is that we're looking at a re-run of California because the pollsters aren't doing their due diligence. They still haven't figured out how to accurately poll Spanish speaking voters - about 30% of the population in Texas.

Hillary's Hispanic vote gives her great esperanza y cambio for a convincing win in Texas . . . and more knife throwing in the weeks ahead.

It's very possible for her to win both TX and Ohio. Delegate counts are unimportant because this is all about momentum and she can improve later in PA, Puerto Rico, Indiana, etc

"We look forward to their tortured answers on Wednesday morning."-Obama's campaign Manager, David Plouffe

For all the talk of Obama being a new type of politician, the more I see and hear from him and his campaign cronies, the more I know he is no different from the rest of them.

http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/0308/Plouffe_Its_still_over.html

You know what they say about counting chickens. Me thinks BHO and company may be a little ahead of themselves here.

Go Hillary GO!!!!!
(Gaw-did I just say that? Pigs must be a flyin' today.)

The lies about the Canadian affair, Chicago political hacks, and what will come will reveal Obama is nothing more than a--gasp--politician. And while there are few of us, I don't think he has it in the bag at all yet.

Thank God.

From Time.com's The Page, Tom Brokaw on MSNBC today says that a source very close to the Obama campaign claims they have 50 more superdelegates lined up.

The buzz at leftblogs is that, if this is accurate, it basically negates any Hillary gains today.

absentee

... It's another S.O.P. political move to leak this information today.

absentee

If Clinton wins big today, don't you think that those superdelegates would swing like weathervanes? It is not as if their inclinations are legally binding.

... in fact it is likely some of these supposed 50 were previously out for Hillary.

I wonder, though, which has more momentum building potential right now, winning two primaries, or yoinking 50 superdelegates from under Hillary's nose.

absentee

My point is that they are not yanked yet. I think the primaries would sway the superdelegates more than the other way around.

I see what you are saying. This may be part of the answer to Moe's query below. Holding out to see what happens.

absentee

Did anybody ask Brokaw why the campaign just didn't announce who they had lined up?

I'm not trying to be cute, here - I just can't figure out why the campaign didn't announce this formally, with a press conference and everything.

"If we want to take this party back, and I think we can someday, let’s get to work." – Barry Goldwater

They would be "ready to go public before too long."

I don't know from Democrat psychology. Maybe they want to appear as if they aren't trying to sway primary voters, but leaked the information in order to go ahead and sway primary voters?

Someone a little more up to speed on Dems could probably answer that one.

absentee

Perhaps they are smiling and saying yes to Obama staff, and holding reserves pending primary results. Aren't a number of these superdelegates in Congress? They may not want to go to far from their constituents wishes, perhaps.

Some DKossers are suggesting they are parceling it out to keep it in the news cycle.

absentee

And nobody nobody wants to have switched sides for the wrong guy 10 minutes before the right guy wins.

I'm sure that every single one of those 50 has a very precise meaning of what "is" means and Obama is using a much loosey-gooseyer definition.

I'd also say that the vast majority of people who bother to show up to vote for this guy or that guy in the democratic primary don't have as firm a grasp on the concept of the whole delegate thing as those of us who show up on the wonkier websites.

Imagine, if you will, someone who was going to go vote for Hillary today but hears that Obama has 50 new superdelegates and who then says "man, I was going to vote, but I will instead pick up a case of beer and watch my tivo'ed episodes of Wheel of Fortune."

Yeah, I can't imagine that person either.

Man is free at the moment he wishes to be. --Voltaire

Hillary gets to play through PA, which she probably wins as well. But because of proportional representation, Obama ends the primary season with a meaningful lead of the "pledged delegates"

If Obama doesn't get the nomination, millions of his supporters will feel he was robbed.

So if we get Clinton or a draft of Gore, the nomination will be seen as having been "stolen". Talk about depressing black voter turnout in November.

And if Obama does pull it out, it will happen only after a long nomination fight that will have deprived him of the opportunity to focus on McCain.

And of course, there is the means by which all of this is decided: the superdelegates and the decision on whether MI and FL delegates get seated.

It doesn't get better than this. :)

If there is split, a rift...McCain should go after black voters, letting them know the Dem party has absolutely abandoned them and has for years - they are now just considered "given" rather than "earned". Then he could lay out how that abandonment has occurred...family values, violence, abortion, and dare I say...immigration.

Erik

Some of our strategic voters don't decide to vote for Obama instead. I keep hearing about this strategy because people believe that despite the numbers, Hillary is more dangerous.

Regardless of the fact I disagree with that, don't we want to continue to see the nomination out of either candidate's hands until it's too late?

You go, girl!

"Fred's my conservative guru, but McCain's my President."

it has always been a conservative little town, despite the population going from 1200 to 6000 in the last 30 years.

It was once a proud farming community, but unfortunately like most small family farms, they have given way to 'progress'. However, our values still hold strong.

Today, I was amazed when I went to vote at the difference between the 'Republican' and 'Democrat' voting traffic. There was no line what so ever at the Republican table and the Democrat table had a long line.

I walked over to the Democrat line (still not clean after showering) and voted for Hillary. I hope what I saw was my fellow Texans voting strategically to defeat Obama now and delay the gratification of destroying Hillary until November.

Tick Tock.

Texas Proud and Texas Loud

Those running the table at the Democrat table were not the brightest bulbs in the box. They kept asking each other and people on the phones about procedures and forms.

However, I have never had that problem with those at the Republican table. I know one of them personally, she lives next door, and the other 2 women running it today are the same ones that are always there.

I sure hope the Democrat confusion continues through the general.

Texas Proud and Texas Loud

no line at all for Rep. booth. I know of only 1 person crossing over (voting for O-Man, against Hillary) and the rest voting Rep.

This does not look good for us in November. McCain will have no coattails but if it is Obama, he will. I have talkes to County and State Party higher ups and they are very concerned. We are not raising money as in the past and the Dem's are swimming in cash.

Also, unless McCain gets us Conservatives excited, he will have big problems, afterall McCain is going after the same voters as the Dems. are-Moderates/Independants.

I voted for Huckabee today and will caucus for Huckabee tonight as well as vote for Huckabee at the County Convention. I can't vote for McCain now and unless he gets it right on Social Conservative issues I will not vote for him in November-I will just write a name in for President.

How much motivation is there for Republicans to turn out for a primary when it's basically a foregone conclusion that McCain has the nomination? I'm not really surprised that they are not turning out in great numbers.

The Dems on the other hand are locked in a battle of mammoth, historical proportions.

We've covered the turnout discrepancy here many times. The Dems have historically had much higher turnouts in primary battles. It does not necessarily translate to general election success.

“.....women and minorities hardest hit”

I am a loyal Republican voter who has never missed a general election in my life, but if I lived in Texas right now, I honestly don't know that I would make a big effort to go vote in the primary, which is bascially a formality for John McCain at this point.

“.....women and minorities hardest hit”

I felt it was very important to vote for the person I wanted McCain to face in the general. I figure the Independents and Democrats gave us McCain, let's give them Hillary.

I pray Hillary gets the nomination. I truly don't believe we can win against Obama, but now it's in the hands of God and the people...I'm pulling for God.

Texas Proud and Texas Loud

that I'd be campaigning for the Clintons, but I'm on my way to go vote for My Girl in San Antonio. Anecdotally, I can report that Hillary's latino support is being underestimated, however I am still afraid of an Obama win and so I have decided to crossover. I urge everyone else in TX to do so as well.

That was awesome.

Let's Roll!

I just voted for Hillary in Ohio. First time I've ever voted for a Democrat - for ANY office. I hope I never have to do it again. But I also hope Hillary wins Ohio. A few more months of her and Obama slinging mud at each other can only be good for us.

Even better, if she manages to stick it out until the convention, she'll be able to pull out her 798 dossiers on the "super" delegates, call them up and remind them that if she doesn't get nominated, certain, um, "uncomfortable" info will appear in the front page headlines of their local newspapers, and get herself nominated.

If that happens, all the Obamamaniacs will get so disillusioned with their party that they won't even bother to vote, and maybe we can avoid even worse losses in the house and senate.

At least, I can hope for that. Otherwise, my betrayal of my principles (getting myself registered as a Democrat! Ugh!) will have been in vain!

I went in with the intent to hold my nose and vote for Hillary...just couldn't pass up the chance to cast my vote for FDT...only time in my life I'll get that opportunity...

All Republicans should cross over and vote Clinton to keep the bloodletting amongst the liberals going for another six months.

As for that video- how can ANYONE watch that and have any doubt at all about who should be our Commander in Chief?!! McCain is the man to lead our military in this war- even if he had no other positives that is enough for me to work for his election!!

Obama is Jimmy Carter- only without the sweater.

You make a good argument- but you are neglecting the fact that liberals and most centrists don't think much about the ACTUAL ISSUES involved. So we all know Obama is a bigger lefty than Che, but to most of the under 40 crowd he is the stud who believes in CHANGE AND HOPE and that is all they bother to care about. Obama will be a much tougher foe, unless Hillary bloodies him up.

And here, by grace of g-d we are hopefully going to have the best of all worlds. Hillary fighting on, bloodying him up day after day, and yet still being 80 delegates behind going into the convention. A liberal civil war is in our best interests when Obama can raise 200 million dollars to McCAin's 80...

Obama is Jimmy Carter- only without the sweater.

McCain is best playing the scappry underdog role, and I must say that Obama is doing well, to quote Rush, by saying nothing better than anyones ever said it. The American people by andlarge don't know who Obama is, other than the hope and change guy. Americans like Hope, Americans like Change-but American's don't like drives liscences for illegal immigrants. American's don't like raising the payroll tax to pay or Social Security, and we don't like killing live babies born outside of the womb. We rejected McGovern 1.0, we'll reject his policies again.

blood. Am I alone in this? What if Huckabee wins Texas 1000 to 957 or something?

I don't have anything against people who are doing it, but we should "pay" McCain for the votes we aren't giving him.

Maybe the crossovers should donate $50-$100 to the McCain campaign for not voting for him. : )

McCain isn't getting a lot of positive free press. He's going to need a lot of money in the fall. I just hope the Repubs aren't outsmarting themselves. I have a sign in my yard, a sticker on my car, and I've already given twice (even though I can't really afford it right now because of grad school and medical bills).

We can beat either one of 'em if we would just get together.

Your argument would be a bit more persuasive if not for one little tiny fact:

the RNC has tens of millions more dollars raised in the last year than the DNC.

Tell us about how we are getting buried again? Maybe most Republicans are smart enough to realize it makes more sense to create mischief in the liberal's primary?

Obama is Jimmy Carter- only without the sweater.

It is MCCAIN who wants this go go on and have his supporters back Hillary to drag them into civil war. Why do you think his LT Charlie Crist "suggested" having a revote in Florida in a few months?!! :)

Obama is Jimmy Carter- only without the sweater.

but I'm afraid we'll leave our own house unguarded while we are busy trying to burgle our neighbor's house.

I just think crossovers donating money to the McCain camp would cover both bases. Why not?

The best part were the cheesy AFN commercials and singing the national anthem before movies.

30 second spots. Theya re a little edgy and are designed to appeal to our young troops. I wish they could be on network TV. They make you think, without being preachy.

I remember loving on Okinawa in the early 80's and having only one channel. The shows were old then too.

Those of us living on the economy get about 7 or 8 channels through a super secret satellite decoder. :>)
AFN Spectrum and Prime (Atlantic and Pacific) are the channels that run the major network shows. AFN Xtra is for young adults. AFN Family for kids. AFN Movie channel (movies are at least 6 months old and older.)
We have a 24 hour news channel that rotates through all the major networks, FOX and CNN. AFN Spectrum and Prime offer a couple of news shows at typical times like early in the morning.
We actually have some reality TV during the same season, just delayed a day since we are ahead of you guys. Survivor, American Idol, Dancing with the Stars. Series TV rotates and there are no reruns.
Still have the same cheesy commercials and DOD propaganda. I wish that everyone in the states could see our Pentagon News segments. We get to see the good that is happening around the world thanks to our brave soldiers, sailors and airmen. It is a far cry from what the MSM shows.
All in all, it is okay, but what I would give for FOX news, the weather channel and TLC. :>)

Just kidding (I love typos).

AFN has come a long way. I'm shocked there is so much selection. Old cold warrior kids like ourselves remember the days of one AFN station, take it or leave it. I think I watched "Shogun" about 12 times.

is kicking himself for throwing in the towel so soon?

Just got back from my swing precinct in Tarrant County; (I voted early) hung around to talk to the GOP and Dem canvassers.

First with the GOP. Folks are hoping mad at Rush Limbaugh telling his listeners to vote Hilary to prolong the Dems misery saying it is hurting them on down ballot races. But I think it is of small effect cos the evangelical base is turning out in heavy numbers.

Next to the Dems, Hilary is AWOL in this area which is a huge mistake for her even if she thinks she can offset her lossess with South Texas victories. Obamans(sp?) are out in full force and turning out their voters (mostly African Americans but lots of anglos (even older ones) and youth too).

Tarrant county has accurately predicted the top statewide vote getter since 1990, so as the heading says, as goes Tarrant so goes Texas!!

Here are real GOP mainstream voters- moderately conservative, both fiscally and socially, without being dogmatic. They (We!) can't STAND Hillary, Bill, the buckets of sleaze.

I have heard MANY people voting for Clinton today.

Up in heavily-Republican Colin County--much longer lines for the Democratic election.

Why? Because we're all gonna vote for Obama in November? Hardly.

What will be interesting to see is how many Republicans voted to kill off Clinton, and how many voted to prolong the Democratic battle.

As i'm in Texas, and today is Texas's primary; i thought it was appropriate to be reminded of reality while the U.S. is in the midst of an election process that will most likely make us a kinder, gentler country:

Venezuela Troops Head to Colombian Border...

China to Increase Military Spending...

Dmitry: Day One... (New Russian president)

OPEC president says he favors cutting oil output...

Israel Says Hezbollah Has 30,000 Rockets...

I really wish the rest of america paid attention enough to these powderkegs and not american idol, because if Obama makes the white house; i'm really expecting one of these or others to blow as a test.

My audience, particularly online (through emails) seem un sure what to do. The temptation to try to spoil things for Obaba is strong. However, the GOP has many strong contested races that need true Conservative to cast their opinons. This is especially true in the Houston area races.

Many of my listeners who didn't like McCain are lining up behind him now to make him look stronger.

Texas:

Hispanics go for Hillary 64-35
Late-deciders go for Hillary by over 30%

Ohio:

Hillary wins among "economy" voters and union voters

These are EARLY exit polls, so don't put a ton of stock in them, but things look good for Hillary so far.....

“.....women and minorities hardest hit”

I understand the case for tactical voting for Hillary in order to produce a weaker Dem nominee. I think the presidency is too important an office for that, but I understand.

The other justification for Hillary is that she has more experience and judgment. Problem is, her judgment sucks, and has repeatedly. Obama tends to get things right the first time. Even on Iraq, Obama correctly gauged the mood of his party over the longer term. I disagree, but respect his insight.

As for Ms. Managing by Hillary, where does one freaking start:
-Cattle futures? Yes, the ideal investment for reforming ideologues.
-Whitewater? ditto.
-Serving on the Wal-mart board? Not exactly a good move in light of subsequent events.
-Covering up Bill's bimbo eruptions while posing as a feminist? Huh?
-The insulting "could have baked cookies" remark? Compared to that, Michelle looks like the voice of reason.
-The White House Travel Office fiasco?
-The Health Care Task Force fiasco?
-Refusing to settle with Paula Jones?
-the VRWC campaign? And then no apology when Bill was, as usual, caught en flagrante?
-skating close to criminality in dodging subpoenas? And then having the goods show up in the WHITE HOUSE?
-the multiculti Hasidim and Chinese campaign donations in 2000?
-her Marie Antoinette roadshow in 2000, aka her "listening tours" in the NY Senate race? Done via Air Force One? Nothing says energy conservation like flying from DC to Syracuse in a 747!
-her vote for the Iraq war?
-her defacto repudiation of said vote?
-her effort to blame Bush for the faulty intelligence gathered by the CIA that was headed by her husband's appointee?
-her decision to unleash Bill and his race baiting in Campaign 2008?
-her just awful response to the driver's license question for illegals, and subsequent pandering and damage control?

This chick is bad news! Enough already!
