Muslims Target JFK

When Will Muslims Condemn Terrorism?

Authorities smashed a "chilling" terrorist plot to destroy John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York.

The al Qaeda wannabees, plotted to blow up a jet fuel artery running under residential neighborhoods and kill thousands of people in the process.

Three suspected members of a Muslim terrorist cell are in custody and one is being sought. One is a US citizen and another is a former member of Guyana's parliament.

According to CNN, the idea for the plot allegedly came from Russell Defreitas, who also apparently recruited the other men.

Defreitas, a native of Guyana, who has been a U.S. citizen since the 1960s, was arrested in Brooklyn,

Abdul Kadir of Guyana, a former member of the Guyana parliament, and Kareem Ibrahim of Trinidad, are in custody in Trinidad. Kadir was on his way to Iran where he had been invited to attend an Islamic conference when he was arrested.

Read on.

The fourth suspect, Abdel Nur of Guyana, is being sought.

The 33 page complaint, available here in pdf format, relies upon information obtained with the help of an FBI informant. The complaint says Defreitas met the informant and a companion at a mall, saying he recognized them from a Brooklyn mosque. Defreitas and the informant met on occasions after that, and eventually Defreitas invited him into the plot.

The complaint alleges efforts to tap Muslim extremists from the United States, Guyana and Trinidad, including the Jamaat al Muslimeen, a group that staged a coup attempt in Trinidad and Tobago in 1990. It says the men tried to solicit money, expertise and technical help from overseas contacts.

The FBI informant recorded conversations with Defreitas. In those conversations, Defreitas describes his desire to launch a strike that would surpass the impact of the Sept. 11 attacks, and explains that his former job gave him "unique knowledge of the airport." In other conversations, the complaint alleges, Defreitas described being angered while working at JFK to see military parts being shipped to Israel "that he felt would be used to kill Muslims."

This latest terrorist plot should give us plenty of pause. The facts that Jamaat al Muslimeen members planning attacks from our south, and three of the suspects accused in the plot to attack Fort Dix, N.J., were in the country illegally for more than two decades, ought to be enough to convince us to secure the border and learn to control who is allowed enjoy all the benefits America has to offer before we decide to forgive and reward those who have gotten here illegally.

And what are we supposed to make about the fact that one of the Muslims accused of plotting against Kennedy airport was arrested on his way to Iran?

Finally, when are Muslims going to stop sitting on the fence and condemn terrorists? I know not all Muslims are terrorists. Nevertheless, I am concerned when Pew finds that 26 percent of young U.S. Muslims find terrorism acceptable, at least in certain circumstances. Why do we not hear loud Muslim condemnation of terrorism and intolerance?

The one thing that no one can argue with, in the reality based community anyway, is that GWB has kept us safer in the last 5 years than we otherwise would have been if this was just being handled as a law enforcement action.

But that is my opinion.

But this is being handled as a law enforcement action--that is why a criminal complaint was filed the United States District Court, Eastern District of New York. If it were not being handled as a law enforcement action the story would likely never have been heard and the men would have been extraordinarily rendered to Jordan perhaps, to, as Tony Soprano described it last night, have their balls zapped.

I was being sarcastic. The comment was not meant to be taken seriously.

seared by the story and realizing that the fumes might have reached the Times building they placed the news as a top of the page lead in, in section B.

Message to crazed Times readers, it's not that important.

Please tell me you're joking, right?

Maybe its just me, but that title is either straightforwardly bigoted, or at the very least is promoting a propagandist view that all muslims are terrorists. Please elevate your dialogue; stronger points about the war on terror can be made than ones that rely on bigotry.

Oh yeah, another big-ups to the local law enforcement, intelligence, and fbi, our only real protection from attacks on our soil.
