Golly, I thought that Democrats had enacted actual military cuts in the 1990s (as opposed to slow-the-rate-of-growth style "cuts" Rs were savaged for imposing on Medicare). Who knew it was all our fault?

I guess when people actually, you know, perform public service, that's when they're attacking the legacy of public service. No, wait, it's when you urge people to perform public service ... when you pay them to perform public service ... as you can see, I'm having a hard time following the reasoning there.
I think I get it: people should be doing the "mercenary" work for free, as a service to the public interest. In 118 degrees, with exploding bus stops.
It doesn't take too much insight to suspect that a different complaint would arise if the mission were saving Darfur or protecting the elephant habitat. Those "mercenaries" would be called selfless heroes, deserving of every penny they could extract from a grateful government.
