ImageTony Snow went from being a speech writer in President George H. W. Bush's White House to the world of journalism and Fox News. Then, this year, he returned to the White House to serve as the current President Bush's Press Secretary -- a job he says is a blast.

In the world of politics, Tony Snow is both a humble, genuine person, and a rock star. In fact, so popular is Tony Snow, he headed out this weekend onto the campaign trail to help Republicans -- something no other press secretary has done. "This is not something I anticipated doing," he said. "I'm not going to be out calling out Harry Reid or Nancy Pelosi or any other senior Democrat. Instead what I'm going to do is talk factually and positively about what the President is doing." Snow will generally be speaking to volunteers, getting them motivated as we head into the final weeks.

During our conversation, I asked Tony why the New York Times and other media organizations, that helped undermine our national security through leaks, still have access to the White House. His response makes good sense. First, he pointed out that the reporters from the New York Times who cover the White House did not write the damaging stories. Then he said, "We think a couple of those stories on the terrorist surveillance program . . . were not helpful in fighting the war . . . and frankly went against what newspapers have done in times of war, which is to try to defend national security." Snow also said that if the reporters who covered the White House did not have access to the White House, they'd still cover the White House, just without the White House's perspective on things.

And what's it like to work in the White House? Tony Snow says it is a blast. The atmosphere is collegial and the President encourages everyone's input and debate. He also says he has more time now with his family then he did when he worked at Fox. But, he says he feels no guilt for causing "Brian and the Judge" to be inflicted on humanity. He holds both Brian Kilmeade and the judge in high regard.

In the course of our interview, I asked Tony Snow about his family, his battle with cancer, and about working in the White House. Tony Snow also shed some helpful light on the leaking of the National Intelligence Estimate. We're pleased to welcome Tony Snow and, through him, the White House, into the blogosphere.

That was a terrific interview; I'm impressed both with his answers, and with his heartfelt, lengthy response to the subject of his cancer experience.

Snow is most definitely a rock star of the GOP -- as well as a great guy.

Don't we pay his salary? Doesn't this seem inappropriate to anyone?

Is the entire White House just a political operation?

Who's manning the ship while they're all out campaigning?

and we pay the President's salary and the salaries of members of congress, too, and they all go out and campaign.

Here's some facts to go with your comment.

1) Last Press Secretary to campaign for the boss was JFK's Press secretary, Peter Salinger.

2) Snow's travel and other expenses are paid for by the Republican Party.

3) He's a civil servant right now, I think even political appointees are, so he gets about 5 hours of vacation ever two weeks. There is also some amount of compensatory time for the OT worked in his job.

4) I haven't looked at the schedule, but I would guess his trips are on weekends, nights and times when the President won't miss him.

So as Jedi Knight Luke Skywalker would say "Nothing to see here, move along".

about congress...

Don't we pay their salaries too?

Isn't the entire congress just one big political operation?

Who's managing the Capitol while they're all out campaigning? Wait, don't answer that. It has to be the pages.

And another thing, why do we pay their salaries and allow them to raise huge amounts of campaign contributions at the same time? Don't you find that inappropriate?

In-other-words, you can't really be serious?

Then again, we're functioning adults.

But please feel free to post all the places where you complained about sitting Democrat Senators such as Clinton, Reid, Obama and so forth taking time out to campaign; for that matter, feel free to note where you complained about President Clinton or his staff doing the same (although, to be fair, that does mostly predate the blogosphere).

Or was this just something that you insist upon by your political opponents?

what about renting out the Lincoln bedroom or the White House coffee fund raisers.

I'll just shut up then.

There are, after all, people who have issues with both practices that you mentioned. I'm just not one of them.

It's very telling when one can so freely discuss their faith in no uncertain terms. We can count our blessings to have such a man in a position of prominence in the White House.

Great interview, Erick. I've always been highly impressed with Snow--both in his tenure at Fox News and his handlilng of the press secretary job now. I think his experience and lessons learned at Fox News are serving him well in the new role, as he's definiely brought some much needed charisma and character into the position. Maybe we'll get lucky and Roger Ailes can lure him back in a couple of years.

And the next Republican president will keep him on!

I meant what I said and I said what I meant. An elephant's faithful 100 percent.

Snow also said that if the reporters who covered the White House did not have access to the White House, they'd still cover the White House, just without the White House's perspective on things.

Forgive me if I'm wrong ... but I can easily recall seeing the Democrat perspective of things in the New York Times, the Left-wing perspective of things in the New York Times, the gay perspective of things in the New York Times, perhaps even Fidel's perspective of things in the New York Times.

But I simply cannot think of any time when I've seen the White House's perspective of things in the New York Times. Unless it was prior to the 21st of January, 2001.

Tony Snow grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio. Hmm...if DeWine loses this year, we're going to need someone to knock of Sherrod Brown in 6 years. :-)

Why not, it's not like you have to know much. You just have to be willing to walk point.

Envisioning when all that is Left is the Right.

The clarity he's brought to the Administration's message has been good not just for the President but for America.

Wish he would run
