Is he or isn't he? Isn't it time to stop flirting and get on with it? What does he think of how the President handled the Scooter LIbby matter?
These are questions Fred Thompson sat down and answered for me on Saturday afternoon. My wife and I attended a fundraiser for Senator Thompson on Friday night where he said he was having so much fun getting into the first or second spot in most national polls by not being a candidate, why rush it. After a late flight in, we rescheduled our conversation for the phone.
On Saturday, while touring Florida meeting with voters across the state, Senator Thompson and I chatted for about thirty minutes on the phone. We discussed Iraq, the Los Angeles Times hit piece against him, Scooter Libby, what his first act as President would be, and several other topics. Senator Thompson also gave his thoughts on this question: can a President actually govern as a fiscal conservative in this day and age?
Today, part one of RedState's interview with Senator Thompson. We asked him about declaring his candidacy and about Scooter Libby.
Here's a hard link to the podcast.

But is whisked away after every event with no media questions allowed and incessantly declines to participate/comment on every piece written about him from a non-homer source?
I think he's a great guy and a good American. But I'm not convinced he has it in him to deal with the opposition and ultra-scrutiny any serious GOP candidate will face.

(and certainly not one that can be put on the roof of a moving vehicle)
...if you weren't yet an official candidate, would you? Why subject yourself to that kind of stress?

Great interview. Thanks for doing it!
Pangloss,
That is a truly great Ronald Reagan quote!!!!! Fred should use that!!!!!!!!
"We are the land of the free. But if we weren't the home of the brave, we would not be the land of the free." -- Fred Dalton Thompson
Hasn't Rep. Tancredo been interviewed more on the front page than FDT?
Get off the bloggyhorse already, please. Bring something to the table other than whining about the website's administration, please. Some of us like it here but are aggarvated by your table pounding.
Your account is 18 weeks old; were you even HERE before Fred! became so hot here?
Run like Reagan!
I'm for Fred. I'm not whining. I'm not being sarcastic. I'm a recent convert. And yes, I was reading Redstate before "Fred!" became hot here, I just wasn't registered.
Lay off.

It's just that when every other post you make seems to be "Fredstate! Fredstate!" which is a term so often used to pain RedState as being a tool of the budding FDT campaign, your comments struck me as drippping with sarcasm.
Sorry.
Run like Reagan!
We love you. As soon as you finish doing your homework, please either pee or get off the pot. You are unique in the Republican candidate list. The stakes are really quite high, for we hope to have a conservative candidate with a brain, who can think, act and communicate his position and rationale to the voters. There is work to be done and I personally think you are the right man at the right time. If you decide to run, and announce formally before I die of old age, remember this is a time our republic needs someone both strong and clear in their leadership. The match up will likely be between a conservative and a socialist, masquerading as a left "moderate". If you can keep the debate on issues and character, you will do great. Hell hath no fury ... and the campaign will be nasty. Nonetheless, we need you to run and win. Hope to see you in the White House soon and some more Republican faces as well. Like we used to type in high school typing class, "Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their country". Did NOT like that class, but already took physics, 2 years of biology, band, all my other classes, so had to take typing or study hall. Now I remember just how important was that typing phrase. Like the Democrats in Chicago, I plan to vote early and vote often. Will even bring all my kin.
Ok, compared to a cheesy, B-movie actor from California and the current inhabitant of the White House, this hack from the Nixon administration may look pretty good (with a face full of TV makeup), but my how low the bar goes when partisanship (on both sides) and not love of country is the sole criterion for decided who to lead us.
...you're too low for ours. How fitting that an anonymous troll can't even dare to attack Ronald Reagan by name. Probably didn't even dare to do that while he was still alive.
Goodbye, anonymous troll.

Personally I think it's refreshing and damned smart politic's to take it slow. I hate it when politicians rush into something without thinking it through. Fred is taking his time and doing it right. I think he'll get the Republican nomination and I think in 08 we're going to have FDT as President.
As an example of spur of the moment decisions, look at this threat by Cindy Sheehan saying she's going to run and boot Pelosi out of her seat, a couple weeks ago Sheehan was done, out of it, now she wants to be back in the spotlight.
Fred, you take whatever time you need, I'm for you now and later!
Seeing as how we are facing Al Qaeda butchers, an Iranian nuclear threat, crazy liberals taking over the country, illegals streaming over our borders..
let me just say how REASSURING it is that Fred is having a jolly good time and doesn't want to actually campaign until he is forced into it months after everyone else has jumped in.
I mean, we wouldn't want to have someoene actually willing to fight the NY Times, much less our enemies. Who needs a strong leader, when you can keep reading polls which have you in second place? Why bother with actually giving public speeches, being questioned by the media, and travelling nonstop. Just keep giving interviews to your own supporters in the blog world- no need to actually subject yourself to any scrutiny or the vagaries of campaigning like the 22 other candidates..
That is just the kind of leadership our country needs in the middle of this war.

And given how your preferred candidate is legendary for cutting off access of those who have dared to impugn his motives, actions, or words, I think you're in a bit too thin a glass house to be taken seriously.
If the willingness to stand up and take it in the face is the relevant criterion, let us pave the ways for Presidents Romney, Brownback, Tancredo, or Paul.
What? No? Oh, right. Your boy is different.

stepping from head to head of the fools who didn't know better is not a bad strategy.
Envisioning when all that is Left is the Right.
Did they cover this in the interview?
After all, an entry that concludes with
Neither possibility will help him with Republican voters who believe that GOP stands for "God's Own Party."
must be without an axe to grind.
Hey, here's a thought: Listen to the interview. Maybe you'll hear something.

I am writing to object to your use of the term 'FredCast' related to a podcast. This term has already been in use for nearly two years for a highly successful and highly-acclaimed podcast. A simple Google and/or iTunes search would have told you this.
I would appreciate it if you would kindly discontinue your use of the term immediately.
Thank you.

That you think anyone's going to confuse a site about bicycles with a site about a Presidential campaign is pretty silly.
I didn't even know he rode a bicycle.

Envisioning when all that is Left is the Right.
What I see among the anti-Fredheads is this.
Some of your candidates jumped in the race far too early, ie, John McCain, and now you have nothing to show for it. Whereas, Fred Thompson made the decision not to enter early because he truly feels campaigns go on far too long as it is. Apparently, Fred Thompson's strategy is working because he is trouncing McCain and Romney is most national polls, and is leading Giuliani in many state polls.
Once Fred gets in the race, there will be many months for him to debate the other candidates. And at that time we can all make the decision as to who we want as our nominee. Its time for everyone to relax and enjoy the dog days of summer...

My two year old and I enjoyed part one. Really looking forward to his response to: "can a President actually govern as a fiscal conservative in this day and age?"
