Al Gore buying much-hyped "carbon offsets" from HIMSELF!

Gore and energy, Kerry and SUVs, Soros and Halliburton...will you darn conservatives quit pointing out our hypocrisy! -sincerely, the Left

Remember those highly publicized "carbon offsets" which AlGore is supposedly purchasing to counter his $2,000.000 per month utility bill (and his use of 20 times the amount of energy per year just in his own home that an average American uses)?

Well, it turns out that the person that AlGore is getting these "offsets" from is none other than...well, AlGore.

Specifically, Gore is apparently purchasing these "offsets" from a company, called Generation Investment Management, which he co-founded, and for which he serves as chairman.

Furthermore, it appears that GIM doesn't even sell carbon offsets to the public - it only provides them to its owner, who happily pays himself for them while continuing to consume 20 times the energy that a "normal" person does.

By the way, the NYT has an article expressing skepticism about "so-called carbon offsets" (which Ecotality nicely defines as "a payment someone makes to an environmentally friendly entity to compensate for personally using non-green energy") and their effectiveness, postulating than not only are most offsets "ineffectual," but that all these modern-day indulgences really are is "a way for the self-indulgent to continue polluting without making any changes to their habits."

If you read that as "it's a scam" too, then we're on the same page. Or, as Ecotality put it, "The words "snake oil" come to mind..."

Isn't this the idea behind Kyoto? Either you reduce certain emissions or you buy offsets from some poor country?

Follow the money!

"You never need a firearm, until you need it BADLY!"

This has been puzzling me. Suppose I say to you, "I will sell you x # of "carbon offsets" for $1000". You then pay me $1000. So.... you get WHAT? A promise from me that I won't drive my car as much? Just how would such a transaction be legitimized? It makes no sense.

As far as the whole AlGore fiasco goes, well, I'm happy to see this "inconvenient truth" exposed. AlGore is a fraud. I look forward to the day when we will look back and laugh at how one man and his groupies were able to fool so many sheep.

Then again, it's kinda scary considering how Hitler did the exact same thing, albeit with much more horrific consequences.

if your goal is a huge redistribution of money.

Bob Hahn (the-editor-formerly-known-as-Nick-Danger) has come up with the best idea so far on carbon trading: adopt a pagan baby.

If all humans are entitled by The Entity to a certain level of carbon output, let's call it x, and you know that you will use 1.5x in your lifetime, all you have to do is adopt a baby somewhere, probably in a metaphysical sense, like in Darfur, who will use .5x. Voila. You are now in harmony with nature. Adopt two pagan babies and you can own a 7,000 sqft garage full of SUVs like Arianna Huffington.

...that are involved in using the most damaging greenhouse gases. I'm not really up on the specific compounds, but Kyoto defines a handful of them in addition to CO2 and CH4. Some of them are freons, iirc. Things that are very useful industrially but have long been outlawed in the West because of their environmental impact. We're talking in some cases about compounds that have thousands of times the greenhouse-power of CO2.

I've heard that there is a raft of Chinese-owned companies operating in Australia that buy carbon credits so they can use these compounds, which are of course vastly cheaper than the alternatives.

Disclaimer: this isn't the best-sourced post I've ever written. If anyone cares to amend or correct, please do so.

That is all I have to say. OK, one more thing:

I wonder if the IRS would be interested in this aspect of the Gorecaster's scam.

Helping rich, Gulfstream-globetrotting, hypocrites lessen their gilt so they can continue to lecture us rubes on silly science.

Sounds more like the practice of purchasing Indulgences if you ask me!

A scam is right!!!

Kyoto Now! (Because only pollution from the US hurts the planet)

'carbon offset' firm (Generation Investment Management) invests in:
AFLAC INC - AQUANTIVE INC - AUTODESK INC - BECTON DICKINSON & CO BLACKBAUD INC - GENERAL ELECTRIC CO - GREENHILL & CO INC - JOHNSON CTLS INC - LABORATORY CORP AMER HLDGS - METABOLIX INC - NORTHERN TR CORP - NUVEEN INVTS INC -STAPLES INC - SYSCO CORP - TECHNE CORP - UBS AG - VCA ANTECH INC - WATERS CORP - WHOLE FOODS MKT INC

He's buying offsets (stock) through a company he manages. Does he draw a salary in addition?

Pretty slick. Never underestimate the gullibility of the American left.

Notice, Generation Investment Management is regulated by the UK equivalent of the SEC. Guess it's better if he does his business outside the jurisdiction of the Securities Exchange Commission.
Interesting...
