Anyway: you see this cute little guy?

Fine, I'll just *be* a damned, dirty ape, then. Us and the chimps and the gorillas? We're going to put all of you hairless *monkeys* in *cages*. When you least expect it... expect it, [redacted].

Well, the reason that he's cowering behind the human is because the Greenies want to kill him. So that they can have have cheap biodiesel. They've already sent out the thugs to kill his mother.

Orang-utans home destroyed for bio-diesel

By Thomas Bell in Central Borneo

The Orang-utans of Borneo are facing an unprecedented threat as their habitat is destroyed to satisfy increasing global demands for bio-fuel.

As jungles are rapidly replaced by palm oil plantations, the great apes starve and are hunted, mutilated, burnt and snared by workers protecting their crops. At a rehabilitation centre run by the charity Borneo Orang-utan Survival, there are more than 600, mostly orphaned babies. Lone Nielsen, the centre's director, estimates that for each of the 227 animals they rescued last year, five more were killed in central Borneo alone.

"There are broken bones, cracked skulls, burns, internal injuries," said Miss Nielsen. "The plantation workers beat them because they want to catch them and the only way you can catch an orang-utan is to knock it unconscious."

Weep, contribute, then read on.

This flagrant disregard for the diversity of life found on this planet is obscene, of course - particularly when linked to the boundless greed of ecology profiteers. But, hey! It's saving the planet, right? What's a near-sentient species more or less? Meanwhile, caribou and polar bear populations are booming. That's because oil producers are responsible stewards of the earth, unlike the short-sighted Gaia-rapers you find infesting the alt-fuel advocacy industry. I'd suggest that the latter try to learn from the former, but it's all about the bottom line with the Greenies.

They should dye your precious biofuels red to reflect the innocent blood that you're shedding, you ecocidal, so-called "deep ecologist" murderers. It'd be more honest.

I'm tired of advocating for conservation that will work, pushing uphill against watermelon environmentalists. Talk about a thankless endeavor.

"Ook" "It's a very compact language, as Terry Pratchett would tell you."

That was great.

BTW, as long as we're on the subject, and acknowledging the real limitations of the attempt to promote bio-fuels, I heard hazelnuts - the bush type native to the US, have potential. The metrics aren't as good as oil palms per acre, but they grow on seriously poor soil in temperate climate, in areas with relatively low biodiversity. On the other hand, anyone remember Jajoba oil?

Responsible development is all about stewardship and conservation. Regardless of what the public "supposes" to be true, oil and gas exploration and development technology has evolved (under market pressure), to do more with less, with a less significant footprint, than ever before.

Few of the alternative technologies wrestle with the realities of implementation on a scale significant enough to impact the nation's energy supply picture. Witness the far-ranging impact of corn ethanol that is killing the Gulf of Mexico on one hand while raising the price of tortillas on the other.

My pet peeve is the Earth Day rally of 100,000 that leaves behind a mountain of beer cans, McDonald's wrappers and soft drink bottles. Care for the environment starts with each individual taking responsibility to properly dispose of his/her own cr*p.

It's such a fine line between stupid and clever. - David St. Hubbins

My father was an avid environmentalist, by that I mean he loved the outdoors and took every opportunity to hike, fish, hunt, or camp that he could. The first thing he taught me as a boy was not how to "skin a buck or run a trot line", but to always leave the woods cleaner when I left, than they were before I arrived. Every trip into the mountains we carried day packs, and when we left they were filled with bottles, cans, candy wrappers, and assorted garbage left by "nature lovers."

What a simple environmental philosophy. I love the outdoors, so I'll help keep it clean. Now his son does the same, and my son follows in those same boot prints.

We need more "father" environmentalists, and less Earth Day attention seekers and preachers.

"The only way to negotiate with your enemy, is with your knee on his chest and your knife at his throat." - Anon.

"[B]ecause the Greenies want to kill him . . . they've already sent out the thugs to kill his mother."

C'mon, this type of hyperbole is useful as satire, but if you're serious, then all it does is hurt your credibility. You and I both doubt there is a "greenie" anywhere who wants to kill him; certainly no "greenie" sent out thugs to kill his mother.

We do know that market forces have changed to where there is more of a market for biodiesel, but there is nothing inevitable about there being more of a market for biodiesel leading to the kind of brutalities described in the article you link to.

People who are smart about policy know that every policy change has downstream consequences. Too many greenies behave as though this is not the case -- rabidly pursuing the panic du jour regardless of consequences.

In this regard, Moe's sarcasm is nuts on.

Hat tip to Neal Boortz for this article about how environmentalists want to slow down ships coming in and out of US ports to protect the whales. Problem is, this'll burn up $100-150 million in extra fuel per year, and that can't be good for their carbon footprint.
