SCHIP On My Shoulder

Despite the fact that the expansion of the SCHIP program tugs at the heartstrings, it is bad public policy, pure and simple. Those seeking to find out just how bad can check out blog posts by Daniel Mitchell, Michael Cannon (note, by the way, what we learn from Cannon's post; that the health insurance lobby, which is mostly vilified by those seeking universal health care, is now a prized--if silent--ally of the very same people who vilify it because it supports SCHIP expansion for its own financial purposes) and Cannon again (I wonder if SCHIP could be used to get a PlayStation, while we are at it).

When the veto fight over this legislation comes, it would be nice if those in positions of authority would pay attention to these posts, which lift the curtain on SCHIP and its consequences. Tugging at heartstrings does not generally help bring about good public policy, after all.
