What's worse than a pedophile?

I'm in Germany for a conference. It's been a great time so far. I spent three days in Munich. Yesterday I came up to Berlin by train. Tomorrow I go to Leipzig for the day, then return to Berlin for the rest of the week.

I'm getting to meet some very great people and I've gotten to see some neat stuff. Tonight I spent a good bit of time at the Reichstag. It's a beautiful building. I was on the roof at about 11pm this evening -- an hour and forty-five minutes ago (yeah, it's almost 1am here and I have to be up at 6am).

Anyway, it is very interesting at this conference. All the Americans talk about freedom, the free market, entrepreneurship, responsibility, and independence. Most, but not all, of the Germans talk about social justice, social responsibility, environmental justice, and "fairness".

Last night a group of us got in a discussion about global warming. I announced myself a skeptic of man-made global warming and was promptly informed that my position made me "worse than a pedophile." I said, "Really, that bad over here, eh?" My counterpart's response was, "Well, we'd put you in the category of a Holocaust denier, but really it's like being a pedophile."

So much for skepticism about something that really, at the end of the day, amounts to a theory.

"Well, we'd put you in the category of a Holocaust denier, but really it's like being a pedophile."

If he meant that even slightly toungue-in-cheek, its actually a pretty funny line.

Just how does the German legal system regard pedophilia these days ?

Also good to see they have put the "ein reich, ein volk, und ein fuhrer" uniformity behind them.

1. Evolution vs. Creationism. Devolution vs. ? Destructionism?
2. Evolution vs. Devolution. Intelligent design vs. Planned obsolescence?
3. Excelerates. Only exceptable if you speak with an excent.
4. Assume global warming is a theory. Assume that it may be either completely right or completely wrong. Assume that we may either do something about it or we may ignore it. For 100 points of your final exam, calculate the risk to the human population of the four possible scenarios. For an additional 10 bonus points, calculate the economic cost of each of the four scenarios over the next 100 years.

Possibilities that are far more likely to be Probabilities than the possibilites you mentioned are.

1) Climate Change Theory is Not entirely right Or wrong, but, as is usually the case with human theories, somewhere in the middle.

2) we may Not be able to do something about it.

It's also possible that the solution, if needed, could be completely technological and does not need to involve massive social restructuring. It isn't surprising that that is the Only Acceptable SolutionTM of the environmental fanatics. As a movement, it has always been closely tied to the Marxists.

Welcome to "old" Europe, Erick. The "old Europe" countries are a white sepulcher filled with dead bones.

I also hope you're "enjoying" the grossly over-inflated German prices on everything - who do they think they are, Norway?

Well, I'm Over There a lot and if you want refreshment in Europe you have to go to the old east bloc countries. There are actually a few sparks of sanity there.

Maybe phrenology can make a come back or better yet corrective phrenology.

that has such hedge funds and outsourcing in it.

Empericism beats guilt by association. You lose.

I thought the anthrogenic global warming freaks had burned that down years ago.

Oh, wait, I just compared them to someone.

It's ironic to hear a German talking to an American about Holocaust denial.

Apparently, you don't know any Germans.

...Galileo visiting the Holy See in Rome four-hundred-years ago. Like Galileo, being unpopular doesn't make you incorrect.

to over here when a lefist doesn't have an argument so they call you a racist.

Actually, this is just the latest eurogeek attempt to slow the US down to their level of incompetence.

Remember ISO9000?

(If you don't, I envy you....)

It was a conspiracy of pre printed forms manufacturers. The evil NEBS headed the plot.

Umm.... Who do you think was conspiring with the pre-printed forms manufacturers?

that theorem, I'm converted ;). But ISO9000 as sabotage? Mon Dieu! It reminds me of a story of the problem of twelve coins, one counterfeit, solve in three weighings etc. During WW2, it wasted so much time at Bletchley Park etc, that it was believed to be a German plant. The solution - get the RAF to drop it on Germany.

Six sigma ... ?

ISO 9000 is not a form of sabotage. It can be worthless, sure, if the people at the top are more interested in getting a certificate on the wall than in being leaders and implementing change in their own processes and the processes company wide, sure.

It's impossible to do effectively if you don't have the backbone to stand up to people who say "Well this is my job and I've been doing it this way for X years, and I know what's best so leave me alone."

But the whole point of the ISO 9000 process is just to document what you do, improve those documented processes, and make sure you implement them consistently.

There's nothing wrong with that, but like most things, it just depends on proper leadership.

And it's not like ISO 9000 is dead. Boeing is still keen on its vendors using the aerospace-specific AS 9000 series of standards, as far as I know, just as an example.

Beer, massive quantities of beer are somehow linked to the discussion session you had with the Germans. I still have not figured out how any sober analysis of being skeptical of MMGW can be comparable to pedophiles.

You might have a point there.

General rule of thumb: Drink with Slavs. They're a lot more fun.

Just curious to find out what kind of people you are traveling with -
I have been living in Leipzig now for 3 years and have not heard anything like that.

Cheers

any honor or b**ls in two World Wars, just as England, France, Italy, and much of Eastern Europe did; what would you expect? These are totally feminized societies; they only care about somebody taking care of them.

In Vino Veritas

Although you'd think that these "totally feminized societies" would have pedophilia at the top of their list of monstrous crimes, a la Reno in Miami. After all, this crime is largely committed by men. I guess the Northern Europe Man-Boy Love Association has some clout. Who knows? Maybe Erick's counterpart had a personal interest in his ranking of the crimes. ;)

without access to the raw data and actual computer algorithms have managed to force NASA to recompute the erroneous numbers that lead to the models that predict catastrophe.

Sorry, I still know too much about science to believe in AGW.

How come the doubters weren't able to get NASA to change temperatures for the remaining 99% of Earth's surface?

Haven't been able to make an accurate forecast yet ?

Come on wink press your luck.
