Normally, I Am Not A Fan Of Term Limits . . .

I happen to think that people should have the right to elect someone to a particular office as many times as they would like to do so. But when that "someone" is Hugo Chavez, then we're really not talking about the need to preserve voter choice, are we?

No. No, we are not. We are talking, instead, about removing yet another barrier--assuming that any barriers really remain (a doubtful presumption)--to dictatorship. I mean, you really have to love the following passage:

The aim of the [term limit] overhaul is "to guarantee to the people the largest amount of happiness possible," Mr. [Willian] Lara [the communications minister] said at a news conference on Tuesday.

Right. Because there's a lot of happiness going around these days in Venezuela.

And yes, the Great and Good Academic Elephant has already discussed this. But I figured "Why not pile on?"

...you mentioned:

" I happen to think that people should have the right to elect someone to a particular office as many times as they would like to do so. "

That's just jim dandy with me to if we're talking about the city council or county commissioners seats but when you take, let's say for example, Senator Edward Kennedy, who is elected by people of Massachusetts but who continues to take money out of MY pocket, continues to endanger MY family with his immigration bills, and threatens the security of MY nation by his opposition to the War on Terror...I have no recourse. Kennedy is affecting my life in a bad way and I have no way of removing him.

Term limits are the only way we can ensure sanity in Congress. Put another way, take a legal pad and on the left side of the paper, list the Senators and Congressmen that you just cannot live without and list those on the right that you want out ...now!

I don't believe the Founding Fathers ever envisioned anyone in this country sitting in the Halls of Congress for 20, 30, or 40 years!

I used to serve in the state legislature, in another state. I can tell you emphatically that government would be MUCH better if we had universal term limits.

Everything elected officials do -- including me, I'm afraid -- was to pander for votes and campaign bucks. I wish I was kidding but I'm not. EVERY vote is based on pandering and fundraising, not what's truly right.

Yes, we need term limits.

How can you tell that a genocidal killer has taken power? A trial and conviction at the Hague?

Not necessary.

Merely the arrival of the Hollywierdo leftists, kissing his arse, and paying homage for his excellent examples of mass murder.
