Picture of the Day: Go Team Iraq!

In a few short hours, Team Iraq will face off against Saudi Arabia in the finals of the Asian Cup. That's right, the hopeless, feckless quagmire made it to the championship game. While some have tried to make common cause between Iraq and its defeated quarterfinal rival Vietnam ("Both have hosted U.S. forces, and both have suffered mightily in the aftermath."), I prefer to see something a little more positive in Iraq's triumphs over communist Vietnam, favored South Korea and, God willing, repressive Saudi Arabia. They have even been gentlemanly about their final opponent, a display of sportmanship that suggests that win or lose tomorrow, this team and this country have come a long way.
Of course, sourpusses will be sourpusses. My my, Iraq actually winning something, even a soccer match, seems to get them down. But maybe they're the ones in a "no-win" situation rather than the team, so let's pity their long, glum faces, loosen up and cheer a little.
Go Team Iraq!

Man why can't we get uplifting stories like this in MSM. Iraq needs to be cast in a more positive light, both to show the good that our forces are doing there as well as mitigate racism against Muslims (which stories like this, about good and successful Iraqis, would help with in my opinion).
the MSM isn't interested in this because it doesn't a) embarrass the Bush administration; b) run down the United States. Pay attention to the program please.

A prayer to St. Anthony has been said for the Iraqi team. It may not take a miracle, but why take chances.

something they can rally around as a country, that is the beauty of sports the country as a whole will enjoy defeating Saudi Arabia, I love an underdog....Go Iraq.
1-0.
I don't see any match reports up yet, but I saw the score over on ESPN Soccernet.
Congratulations to Iraq, and may the celebrations be free off too much celebratory gunfire, which might be about the dumbest tradition ever.

...ignore that the peace loving insurgents would put these players to death for playing soccer.
I am thankful that these wonderful players get to play. Team USA just gets David and Posh Becham Hollywood parties instead.

If they lose, it will be our fault for depriving them of the brilliant motivational skills of Uday.
If they win, it will be our fault for depriving them of the chance to thank Uday for having so brilliantly motivated them.
Tough. Go Team Iraq. Enjoy the game!
